My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 43: Something Has Been Planted in the Car
Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Something Has Been Planted in the Car
After a few collisions, the man, now high on adrenaline, licked his lips, his eyes excitedly scanning the passing vehicles.
"If you want to go get yourself killed, I’m not going to stop you. But likewise, we’re done with you," the voice that had just urged the man to crash spoke again. "I can’t stand disobedient, brainless partners like you. If you can’t produce any results, our partnership is over, ’kay~?"
With that, the caller hung up, pulled the SIM card from the phone, and snapped it in two.
"Idiot. If he really causes a major traffic accident, the nature of this whole thing will change."
The man in the baseball cap threw the SIM card on the ground and stomped on it viciously, his tone disdainful.
Their game had already drawn the attention of the provincial Major Crimes Unit. If they caused another major traffic accident, several other agencies would likely get involved.
He still had plenty of interesting ideas he wanted to try; he couldn’t afford to get caught now.
The woman next to him was leaning against a hallway wall, holding a phone. The screen displayed a live feed from inside the police car.
"Don’t be in such a rush. If we’re going to play, we have to go big."
"What’s the fun in causing a few car accidents out here? It’d be way more thrilling to blow something up inside the police station." The woman tapped her phone screen, her eyes glued to Zoe Sawyer.
’Let’s see what tricks you have up your sleeve this time.’
The man in the baseball cap leaned in, clicking his tongue in amazement as he looked at the woman’s phone screen.
He’d thought he was twisted, but after seeing what Ruby had planned, he realized he was still just an amateur.
"Aren’t you afraid we’ll get caught? The boss said he wouldn’t clean up our messes for us," the man in the baseball cap said, his words muffled by the cigarette dangling from his lips.
"What’s there to be afraid of? We’ll be gone once we finish this. They aren’t that quick."
"She’s ruined so many of our games. Isn’t it only fair that I collect a little interest from this little missy?" Ruby waved the controller in her hand, a meaningful smile on her face.
She had made thorough preparations, guaranteeing that by the time these cops traced their way here, they would be long gone, living it up in another city.
Since she put it that way, the man in the baseball cap said nothing more.
Meanwhile, Heath Hale called the chief to give him a brief report and ask him to send men to intercept the driver of the black Volkswagen.
As he was about to hang up, Heath Hale heard the chief’s voice, deliberately lowered. "There’s noticeable static on your end. I think someone planted a bug. Be careful."
Although Heath Hale was shocked, he didn’t let it show on his face. He exchanged a few more words with the chief in a normal tone and volume before hanging up the phone.
His eyes subtly scanned the interior of the police car.
’With today’s technology, for the chief to hear static that clearly, they must have planted an enhanced signal receiver. That ensures they can intercept our communications within a certain radius.’
’In other words, the culprit is watching us from somewhere through an electronic device.’
He thought back to the black Volkswagen that had repeatedly rammed into them. Heath Hale understood.
It was a test, and more than that, a warning.
The car soon reached the entrance of the police station. Before it could pull in, Heath Hale spoke. "Stop here. Zoe Sawyer, you get the door. Remember what I told you?"
Zoe Sawyer, who had been looking listless, suddenly sat bolt upright, a doubtful expression on her face.
’Now?’
Before she could voice the question, she saw Heath Hale give a firm nod.
Zoe Sawyer swallowed her question. Coach Hale wasn’t one to act without reason; he must have had his own logic for this.
Heath Hale shielded his phone with his body and quickly typed out a message, then hit send.
"Here, take this." Heath Hale pulled out a small, exquisite handgun and handed it to Zoe Sawyer.
It wasn’t a real gun, but an anesthetic gun he had specially requested from his superiors. He’d chosen this design specifically to better intimidate their enemies.
The darts inside were also specially made; a single one could knock out an elephant.
It was meant to be a self-defense weapon for Zoe Sawyer. He had planned on giving it to her after they got back, but he never expected to hand it over right here and now.
Zoe Sawyer looked surprised. Heath Hale had mentioned it to her before.
But she never expected it to be ready so soon, much less for it to be placed in her hands at this very moment.
The act of him handing her the anesthetic gun was what made Zoe Sawyer realize something was wrong.
There had to be some kind of danger for Heath Hale to give her the gun now.
’What kind of danger could there be, right at the entrance of the police station?’
Zoe Sawyer’s gaze fell on the car door in front of her. ’Or maybe... the danger is waiting right behind the door, and all that’s needed is for me to open it?’
At a signal from Heath Hale, Sean Hughes and the officer behind the wheel also opened the doors on their side, poised for action.
Ruby watched the movements of Zoe Sawyer and the others on the screen, a little confused. ’What on earth are they doing?’
Soon, Zoe Sawyer’s hand rested on the door handle.
She opened the door a crack. Sure enough, the scenery on the other side wasn’t the police station entrance, but the rooftop of a high-rise building.
From her vantage point, she could even see another skyscraper in the distance.
"Ruby, what are they doing? They’re all opening their doors but no one’s getting out. Should we just blow it up and be done with it?"
A man’s voice came from nearby, and Zoe Sawyer’s heart leaped in shock.
’They couldn’t be talking about us, could they?’
’And from this angle, I can just see the edge of someone’s clothes. That must be the man who’s talking.’
At that moment, Zoe Sawyer’s mind raced, and she instantly understood the meaning behind all of Heath Hale’s actions.
She turned to look at the other three people in the car and said, "I’m ready. You all get ready, too."
With that, Zoe Sawyer carefully pushed the door open a little wider, finally revealing most of the other person’s body.
When she saw the familiar baseball cap, Zoe was startled, but she still raised the anesthetic gun and fired at him.
The distance between them wasn’t great, and since the man in the baseball cap had his back to her, he never saw her move.
As for the woman they called Ruby, her view of Zoe was completely blocked by the man, so she naturally didn’t see a thing.
But as the man in the baseball cap suddenly crumpled, Ruby’s heart skipped a beat. ’Someone’s here?!’
’Why didn’t I hear a gunshot?!’
Worried that her entire plan would be for naught, Ruby hastily pressed the button in her hand.
Meanwhile, the moment Zoe Sawyer fired and confirmed her shot had hit its mark, she slammed the car door shut.
A faint but very distinct beeping—a bomb’s countdown—started coming from the car seat.
The next second, the car door was yanked open from the outside.
Evan Keller appeared in front of her and yanked Zoe Sawyer from the car.
The other three dove out at the same time.
BOOM!
