My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 373: You Must Be Zoe Sawyer. I’ve Heard So Much About You.
Chapter 373: Chapter 373: You Must Be Zoe Sawyer. I’ve Heard So Much About You.
Captain Young gave Evan Keller and Heath Hale a thumbs-up, his tone full of admiration.
Evan Keller and Heath Hale exchanged a glance, then shook their heads and explained, "We weren’t the ones who noticed something was off or found the evidence. We’re just members of her team."
They didn’t want to take the credit, but at the same time, they couldn’t expose Zoe Sawyer. So, the two of them offered a simple explanation and left it at that.
Hearing this, Captain Young’s expression was one of utter surprise. ’Someone else?’
’Who could it be?’
Before Captain Young could puzzle it out, Evan Keller and the team had already handed over all the relevant evidence to their colleagues at the local station.
All that was left was the follow-up, which the local officers could handle just fine without them.
Sure enough, things went pretty much as Zoe Sawyer and her team had expected.
In less than three days, Captain Young and his people had the whole thing wrapped up.
First was the matter of the stolen electrical wires.
The police found a red notebook hidden in a corner of Aaron Nash’s residence.
A handwriting analysis confirmed the notebook belonged to Aaron Nash.
In it, Aaron Nash had meticulously recorded when he’d hit which residential complexes, how much copper wire he’d stolen, and how much money he’d made from selling it.
The eighteen-story residential building where it all started was one of the locations Aaron Nash had burglarized.
However, finding the culprit now was of little use, as the thief, Aaron Nash, was already dead.
He was penniless and saddled with debt, making it impossible to get any compensation from his estate.
There was no other choice. The damages would have to be covered by the local government.
As for Mr. Wallace, after the body of the simple girl was found, the police had gone to his home to investigate and collect evidence.
His neighbors learned what had happened as a result and were stunned to discover Mr. Wallace’s true nature.
Upon learning of Mr. Wallace’s arrest, Jane Carter immediately wrote a post about what her daughter had endured and published it online. She fiercely condemned his character and declared her intent to unite with other parents of victims to see that justice was served.
Initially, because of Mr. Wallace’s good reputation and out of concern for their children’s emotional well-being, victims like Jane Carter had suffered in silence, afraid that speaking out would worsen their children’s trauma.
But things were different now. After learning of Mr. Wallace’s arrest, Jane Carter’s twin daughters emerged from their room and declared their firm decision to make the truth public.
Jane Carter contacted the other parents and discovered that most of their children had made the same request after hearing Mr. Wallace had been arrested.
After discussing it among themselves, they posted the entire story online, ensuring Mr. Wallace’s reputation would be utterly destroyed.
Meanwhile, the simple girl’s parents were in disbelief when they received the call from the police station.
’Wasn’t our daughter supposed to be off enjoying a better life? How could she be gone after we hadn’t heard from her for a little while?’
The dispute between the two families would likely drag on for some time.
As for Mr. Wallace, with the combined evidence for intentional homicide, abandonment of a corpse, and various other crimes, the circumstances were deemed severe. He was sentenced to death with a one-year reprieve.
And with that, the case that began with a stolen grounding wire was finally closed.
Meanwhile, things were different for Zoe Sawyer.
"Barry Quinn, what’s wrong with you and Monkey? You both look so unsettled." Zoe Sawyer had noticed their troubled expressions, her voice tinged with confusion.
The two of them had been like this since last week.
Hearing the exchange, Heath Hale and the others nearby looked over, their expressions a mixture of concern and curiosity.
Barry Quinn rubbed his face. Noticing the looks from the others, he sighed in resignation. "My former superior came to see me last week."
"There’s a very important mission. It involves classified intelligence that connects to one of my old cases, and he wants us to go back and take it."
Barry Quinn didn’t spell it out, but everyone understood the implications.
A classified mission had surfaced that was connected to an old one, and their superior didn’t trust anyone but the experienced duo of Barry Quinn and Monkey to handle it.
But the two of them had already been assigned as Zoe Sawyer’s personal bodyguards.
Leaving suddenly would compromise Zoe Sawyer’s security, but that mission...
Barry Quinn thought of the team members they had lost on that case, and the desire for revenge gnawed at him.
This was the conflict that had been tormenting both Barry Quinn and Monkey, and it was this turmoil that Zoe Sawyer had picked up on.
"Don’t worry, I already turned him down," Barry Quinn said. "Yesterday, I compiled everything I know and gave it to him. Someone else will take over the mission."
"Our mission right now is to protect you," Barry Quinn said, looking at Zoe Sawyer with a determined expression.
"Is that all?" Zoe said, waving a dismissive hand after hearing the whole story. "Just go. If you’re not around, I’ll just be good and stay put at the station.
Even if a mission comes up that requires me, Heath Hale is still here, isn’t he? Don’t worry, I’ll watch out for myself."
’I’ve stayed cooped up in the station for months before. I can definitely do it again to stay safe.’
’Most importantly, I could hear the regret in Barry’s voice. There’s definitely more to this that I don’t know.’
"Besides," Zoe Sawyer added with a grin, "if you go on this mission, you might end up needing me to transport something for you later anyway."
Heath Hale and Evan Keller remained silent. It wasn’t their place to interfere.
Barry Quinn shook his head. He was about to say something when a knock at the office door interrupted him.
Everyone looked toward the sound and saw the Chief standing at the door with an unfamiliar man.
The man was dressed in ordinary clothes, but the powerful aura he exuded made it clear he was no ordinary person.
Upon seeing the man, Barry Quinn and Monkey shot to their feet, their eyes wide with disbelief.
"Quincy, it’s time to go. Your former superior came to get you himself," the Chief said as he led the man into the office and closed the door behind them.
’For that old dog to come asking for them in person... it must mean the mission is so critical that only the experienced pair of Barry Quinn and Monkey can handle it.’
’The mission is important, but Sawyer’s safety is important too.’ The Chief felt a headache coming on. ’Still, I can control the latter. I’ll just have to keep Sawyer on a short leash and not let her go out for a while.’
Barry Quinn hesitated. "But..."
Before he could finish, the Chief waved a hand. "Don’t worry. You’re just on loan. You’ll be back as soon as the job is done. Otherwise, who would I entrust Sawyer’s safety to?"
With the Chief putting it that way, and their former superior having come in person, Barry Quinn and Monkey had no choice but to accept.
The man’s gaze swept across the office before finally landing on Zoe Sawyer.
As everyone watched with nervous anticipation, he walked up to Zoe Sawyer, extended his hand, and spoke in a gentle voice.
"You must be Zoe Sawyer. I’ve heard a great deal about you."
