Chapter 371: Chapter 371: Starting With the Idiot My Family Paired Me With

Under the strange stares of the people around them, Mr. Wallace was taken back to the police station by Evan Keller and the others.

Meanwhile, Captain Young led the other members of his team, using the electrical room as a center point to radiate their search outwards.

They planned to find whatever Mr. Wallace had hidden as quickly as possible.

「Back at the police station, in the interrogation room.」

Evan Keller and Heath Hale sat at the table, their hands clasped and resting on its surface. Their eyes were fixed on Mr. Wallace. "Let’s hear it. Why did you go after Aaron Nash? Because he was blackmailing you?"

Mr. Wallace’s heart skipped a beat when he heard Aaron Nash’s name, but he quickly composed himself. "Who’s Aaron Nash? What is this all about? Why did you drag me here? I have a ton of work to do. I don’t have time to play games with you."

Evan Keller didn’t answer his question. Instead, he took a slow sip of water and said, "You know, Aaron Nash was a smart man. Smarter than you, at the very least."

Hearing this, Mr. Wallace’s gaze flickered, but he remained stubborn. "Officer, I don’t know what you’re talking about. And I don’t know anyone named Aaron Nash."

"Not knowing the name is fine. You must have seen that guy who wanders around the nearby neighborhood, looking for odd jobs, right?" Evan Keller set down his water glass, his eyes boring into Mr. Wallace.

Feeling the pressure, Mr. Wallace pretended to think for a moment before putting on an expression of sudden realization. "Oh, I remember now. That handyman. So that was Aaron Nash.

But did something happen to him? What does that have to do with me?" ℯℯ𝘭.

Heath Hale looked at the stubborn man before him, took a USB drive out of a nearby bag, and dangled it in front of Mr. Wallace. "Guess why we zeroed in on you so quickly? Before Aaron Nash went to see you, he made a special trip to the station and gave this to us.

"He said he was coming to find you, and if he didn’t make it back that night, it meant you had killed him to silence him.

"And he told us pretty much everything about what you were doing in that pipe room."

Perhaps feeling the USB drive wasn’t intimidating enough, Heath Hale pulled a blurry photo from the bag and quickly flashed it in front of Mr. Wallace.

The photo was somewhat blurry, and combined with the speed at which it was moved, Mr. Wallace could only barely make out its contents.

It showed a dimly lit room where a figure was bent over, dealing with something.

But just as Mr. Wallace tried to get a clearer look, Evan Keller had already put the photo away.

Even so, after that brief glimpse, Mr. Wallace’s heart began to pound wildly.

All the mental fortitude he had built up crumbled to dust.

’Don’t tell me Aaron Nash also took a picture? And before he came to find me, he went to the police and told them his entire plan?’

’Then why didn’t they bring it up at the beginning?’

’No, stay calm. Maybe they’re just bluffing!’

Just as Mr. Wallace shored up his mental defenses, he heard Heath Hale’s voice from the other side. "Aaron Nash said he was desperate for money and wanted to use this to redeem himself and earn a reward. He was hoping we, the police, could give him some bonus money to pay off his debts.

"He even gave us a heads-up on exactly what he was going to say to you."

Evan Keller and Heath Hale took turns, repeating the threats Aaron Nash had made to Mr. Wallace before his death.

The more he listened, the paler Mr. Wallace’s face became.

The order of the phrases was exactly the same as what Aaron Nash had said that day. That man, Aaron Nash, was really setting a trap!

’And I... I let my emotions get the better of me. I lost control and killed him!’

’Great. Now the police have come knocking!’

’My job, my reputation, my whole life—it’s all ruined! My neighbors will definitely use me as a topic for their idle gossip. My colleagues will surely laugh at me behind my back and carve up my student base.’

’If they find the files I’ve hidden on my computer and hand them over to the police...’

’I’ll definitely spend the rest of my life in prison!’

Mr. Wallace was so terrified by these thoughts that he shuddered violently. His breathing became rapid, his face turned deathly pale, and his body began to convulse, looking as if he were about to pass out at any moment.

Evan Keller and Heath Hale were stunned by this display. They rushed over, patting his chest to help him breathe. Only after they were sure he had recovered did the two of them breathe a sigh of relief.

They had interrogated physically weak suspects before, but they had never seen someone suddenly start gasping for air mid-interrogation, looking like he could drop dead at any moment.

The crucial thing was that Mr. Wallace had shown no signs of this previously.

"Hyperventilation syndrome. He should be fine, but if you have more questions, you should ask them quickly. We can send him to the hospital for a detailed examination afterward.

"I’ll be waiting right outside. If anything happens, I can come in immediately." Seeing the situation in the interrogation room, the young officer outside had immediately run to the infirmary to fetch help.

The doctor gave Mr. Wallace a brief examination, and after confirming there was no serious issue, he stood up straight and spoke to Evan Keller and Heath Hale.

"Alright, we understand. We’ll pace ourselves," Evan Keller said, nodding to the doctor. After the doctor left, he turned his attention back to Mr. Wallace.

Heath Hale reached out and tapped the table. "We’re giving you a chance by questioning you here.

"I’m asking you one last time: do you want to confess now for a lighter sentence—and try to get this ruled as ’manslaughter’—or do you want to wait for us to bring out what’s in that pipe room, combine it with the Aaron Nash case and what you did to those students, and have it all judged together?

"By then, you won’t get a chance this good again."

The air in the interrogation room froze. Mr. Wallace’s breathing grew ragged again, his eyes fixed on the USB drive and photo Evan Keller had set aside.

He wanted to snatch the items, but he knew it was impossible.

He thought about faking another episode and passing out, but with the doctor watching like a hawk from outside, that path was blocked too.

Mr. Wallace ran through every possible scenario in his head and realized none of them would work.

Other than confessing and hoping for leniency, there really was no other way out.

Once he understood this, Mr. Wallace completely deflated. His tone became heavy. "I’ll talk. I’ll tell you everything."

Evan Keller and Heath Hale exchanged a look, a flash of pleased surprise in their eyes.

They sat back down, opened their notebooks, and prepared to take notes. "Tell us everything, from beginning to end. We need to take an official statement."

"Don’t you know it all already?" Mr. Wallace frowned, wondering why they were going to all this trouble.

"This is a police investigation. Just cooperate," Evan Keller said, his tone hardening.

Mr. Wallace was silent for a long moment. Finally, he spoke.

"It all started when my family married me off to an idiot."
