Chapter 37: Chapter 37: At Least Take One Down

A Mandarin voice with a thick regional accent rang out from ahead.

"Go get him! He dared to hurt one of our guys? I’m gonna skin him alive!"

"The first one to catch him gets a hundred thousand from me!"

As the words faded, Zoe Sawyer clearly heard cheering from the other side.

It was followed by the sounds of running and things being overturned.

Zoe felt a knot of tension in her stomach. They were hunting a police officer!

But hearing the commotion outside, she knew that if she went out now, she’d be walking right into the lion’s den.

Zoe could only pray silently, hoping the fleeing officer would run in her direction. That way, she might be able to help.

Soon, a gunshot cracked through the air. Zoe heard a heavy grunt not far away.

It was immediately followed by the sound of a body hitting the ground.

"Boss! I hit him!"

"Nice one. Now go bring him over."

Zoe peeked out quietly and saw a man in a black denim jacket lying on the ground, his hand still gripping a pistol tightly.

At a glance, he wasn’t moving.

Zoe had a very clear understanding of her own strength.

After the last few days of training, she could probably make it out and back before one of the henchmen arrived, but carrying a grown man? That was practically impossible.

’Going out there rashly would just be getting myself killed for nothing.’

’If only I could move the door over there!’

’Right in front of the man!’

"Come on, work your magic! Move the door! It doesn’t have to be for long, just give me one minute!" Zoe patted the doorframe anxiously.

As her voice fell, a soft, gentle white light emanated from around the doorframe.

A few seconds later, the light dissipated. Zoe pushed the door open a little wider and saw the man who had been lying on the ground suddenly appear right in front of her.

’It worked!’

’The door really moved!’

With no time to think, Zoe pushed the door open a bit more, grabbed the man’s arm, and started pulling him back.

’There’s a pool of blood under him!’

Zoe was worried that if she didn’t stop the bleeding soon, he would die.

"Who’s there!"

The man suddenly gripped his pistol, struggling to aim it at Zoe.

"Colleague! Colleague! I’m here to save you! The guys on the other side are coming, hurry!" Zoe had no time to explain, so she just yelled "colleague" as she pulled him.

Judging by the footsteps, the man who had just shot him was about to arrive.

If they didn’t hurry, they’d both be done for.

’No, wait. If this guy dies, I can still hide back inside.’

Perhaps trusting his marksmanship, or maybe knowing the injured man wouldn’t last long, the shooter approached at an unhurried pace.

This gave Zoe time to save him.

The man looked up, past Zoe, and his pupils contracted when he saw the decor inside.

The layout inside was indeed the standard furnishing for a police dormitory.

And when he’d fled into this area, he had noticed the building behind the warehouse.

There definitely wasn’t any extra space to accommodate a room like this.

’Besides, in my current state, there’s no reason for someone to go to such lengths to trick me.’

After a few seconds of frantic thought, without Zoe needing to say another word, the man pushed himself up and worked with her to get all the way inside.

Just as he leaned against the doorframe, they both heard footsteps.

"Where is he?" The underling who had fired the shot sauntered over. He had expected to see an unconscious cop on the ground, but instead, all he saw was a pool of blood.

He rubbed his eyes in disbelief.

’There are no other exits here!’

’How did he just disappear?!’

"Wait, why is there a door here?" The underling rubbed his eyes again. He didn’t see the man, but he did see an out-of-place white door, which was slightly ajar.

A strange, ominous feeling rose in his heart. The underling didn’t have time to answer his boss’s call from outside. He gripped his pistol and slowly, inch by inch, approached the door.

The injured man forced himself to sit up, his own pistol held in a death grip.

’If that punk dares to get any closer, I’ll open fire immediately!’

’I’m in bad shape anyway. Might as well take one of them down with me.’

Soon, the underling reached the door. He reached out to pull it open, but the door was like it had been welded to the floor. It didn’t budge an inch.

Having no other choice, the underling cautiously circled around to the front, remaining on high alert.

Too bad for him. The moment he poked his head out, the injured man shot and killed him without a second’s hesitation.

"What happened?!"

The boss, who had been waiting outside for his underling to bring the man out, suddenly heard the gunshot. That, combined with his unanswered calls...

...a bad feeling washed over him.

He ran over with his men to see what was going on.

But right after the man fired his shot, Zoe slammed the door shut, completely removing them from danger.

"You wait right here. I’m going to make a call and get the chief over here!"

After closing the door, Zoe didn’t waste any time. She rushed to the desk, grabbed her phone, and made a call.

’This officer has a gun!’

’And the enemies he’s facing have guns too!’

’This is definitely no simple mission. In a situation like this, it’s best to notify the chief immediately.’

After briefly recounting the situation, Zoe pulled out the first-aid kit that Sean Hughes always kept under the bed.

’His injuries are too severe. If I don’t treat them now, I’m afraid he won’t make it until the doctor arrives!’

The man leaned against the door, his gaze taking in the familiar dorm room furnishings and the uniform hanging on the wall. He visibly relaxed.

His eyelids began to droop uncontrollably.

"Hey, hey, hey, don’t fall asleep! I don’t know how to handle this! You still have to debrief your mission yourself; you can’t just dump the work on me!" Zoe rambled as she clumsily bandaged the man’s wound.

’Thank you, Coach Heath Hale!’

If it weren’t for his insane training this past week, she wouldn’t have been able to identify half the things in the first-aid kit, let alone bandage someone up.

"Don’t sleep, don’t sleep! If you pass out, don’t blame me if I tie your bandages into a bow! If my coach finds out I messed up my first rescue attempt after all his training, he’ll definitely train me into the ground later."

Listening to Zoe’s rambling, the man couldn’t help but let a small smile form on his lips.

’I guess I’d better hang on,’ he thought. ’I can’t just listen to all that and let a junior colleague get chewed out, can I?’

The police station’s office building wasn’t far from the dorms.

Zoe hadn’t even finished bandaging the man when a series of urgent knocks came from the door.

After carefully moving the man aside, Zoe said, "Open."

She didn’t dare open it herself, terrified they would end up back in that warehouse.

The chief rushed in, followed by a doctor, Evan Keller, and others.

They were met with the sight of the man lying on the floor, covered in blood.

"Quincy?"
