My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 350: Ghost Employee
Chapter 350: Chapter 350: Ghost Employee
’I know so much about the Boss. If she abandons me, is there any way I’ll survive?’
Thinking of the miserable fates of those who had been abandoned before, the man shook his head frantically.
’No!’
’I absolutely cannot let that happen!’
But things rarely go as planned. Before the man could figure out how to send a new person over, the phone on the coffee table suddenly rang.
That specific ringtone made the man’s heart skip a beat.
With no time for second thoughts, the man quickly answered the call.
"How are things looking lately? It’s been a while since you sent any new information." A lazy, feminine voice came from the other end of the line.
The man forced a smile and said, "Everything’s normal, Boss."
"Those cops are just going out on their daily patrols, making their rounds and coming back the same day. I haven’t seen any important figures come this way."
"It’s been exactly the same as before, nothing out of the ordinary, so I took the liberty of not reporting to you."
After he finished speaking, a long silence hung on the other end of the line.
The man held his breath, his heart pounding in his chest.
He was taking a gamble!
He was betting that the Boss hadn’t been paying attention to the situation at the police station over here!
He’d heard from colleagues on that end that the Boss’s various properties and bases around the world had recently come under mysterious attacks.
Just dealing with all that was enough to keep her swamped every day; she had no time to worry about anything else.
On top of that, all of the Boss’s previous people had been arrested by the cops, so she might not have enough manpower.
That was why the man dared to lie about this, trying to pull the wool over her eyes.
Fortunately, Lady Luck smiled upon the man this time.
After a good while of silence, the Boss finally spoke again. "I see."
"Don’t let it happen again. From now on, I want real-time reports. Don’t miss a single detail."
"Yes, yes, of course. I understand," the man agreed with another forced smile.
Having gotten the answer she wanted, the Boss hung up and went back to the pile of overwhelming work in front of her.
Only after the call ended did the man finally let out a sigh of relief.
’No, I can’t send anyone over to keep watch yet. The police are probably lying in wait.’
’But I have to provide new reports every day.’
At this thought, the man’s gaze fell upon the phone on the floor.
’Looks like there are a lot of photos on here that I haven’t sent yet. I can use these to string her along for a while.’
’Once the police let their guard down, I’ll send someone over to check things out.’
Having figured out his next move, the man relaxed.
He picked up his phone, scrolled through it, selected a picture, and then fabricated a message based on previous reports and sent it off.
Once that was all taken care of, he leaned back on the sofa and started thinking about his escape plan.
If the Boss ever found out what he’d done, at least he’d have a contingency plan.
「Meanwhile, in the neighboring province of Gremore, a conspiracy was brewing within a remote factory complex.」
Arthur Sullivan looked at the two salary payments that had just hit his account and, beaming, packed up his things to head home from work.
On the way home, he didn’t forget to buy the strawberries his daughter loved.
"Daddy! You’re home!" Arthur Sullivan’s daughter, Lacey, who had been watching TV on the sofa, jumped down the moment she saw her father push the door open. She then came running into his arms.
Arthur Sullivan was startled by her actions. He dropped the things in his hands, picked up his daughter, and nervously checked her over from head to toe.
Only after confirming she was okay did he finally feel relieved.
Then, he looked at Lacey with a stern gaze and tone, saying, "No more running and no more jumping next time, okay? Walk slowly."
"Daddy’s standing right here. I’m not going anywhere."
Lacey knew she had done something wrong. She looked down, a little embarrassed, and promised in a tiny voice that it wouldn’t happen again.
Arthur Sullivan closed the door. Cradling his daughter in one arm and picking up the things off the floor with his other hand, he walked toward the living room, not forgetting to ask Lacey, "Where’s Mommy?"
"Mommy went to work. She told Lacey to watch TV by herself for half an hour," Lacey said sweetly, pointing toward the study. Her voice was filled with adoration for her parents.
Arthur Sullivan set his daughter down on the sofa, then washed the strawberries he’d bought and brought them over to her.
"Lacey, you watch some TV for a bit. Daddy is going to go check on Mommy’s work," Arthur Sullivan said, ruffling his daughter’s hair. After making sure she was settled, he walked toward the study.
Arthur Sullivan’s wife was currently working from home as a customer service representative. Her original salary wasn’t high, so to earn more income, she had applied to be on standby 24/7.
When Arthur Sullivan came in, she had just finished handling a customer’s complaint call.
"You’re back?" Arthur Sullivan’s wife, Fiona Hawthorne, took off her headset and rubbed her temples wearily.
Arthur Sullivan reached out and took over for her. "Yeah, I’m back. And I got paid."
"If we keep saving, we’ll have enough for Lacey’s heart surgery soon."
Thinking about what her husband was doing, Fiona Hawthorne’s voice held a trace of worry. "Will it be okay? What if you get caught?"
Arthur Sullivan’s tone was firm. "No, they won’t find out. I’m the HR specialist at the factory. I handle all the employee files and attendance records."
"I just secretly created a ghost employee. No one else will notice."
"Besides, I didn’t make the salary too high—only four thousand."
"It’s below the threshold for taxation, so it’s less likely to be discovered."
"And in a factory with over ten thousand people, a good portion of the staff are on flexible schedules."
"They go wherever a production line is short-staffed."
"There’s high turnover, so the chances of being discovered are actually very small."
"And once we have enough for the surgery, I’ll delete the record. I won’t take advantage of the factory anymore."
"My parents also transferred some money to me. It’s what they earned recently from doing odd jobs."
"Once we have enough for Lacey’s surgery, you should quit this job. Being on call 24/7 is too exhausting." Arthur Sullivan’s voice was gentle, and his hands slid from her temples down to her shoulders, kneading them with a soft, rhythmic pressure.
Seeing that her husband had a plan, Fiona Hawthorne said no more.
’Lacey’s condition is too serious. We have to get her the surgery quickly, while she’s still young.’
’If the factory investigates later, I’ll just go work for free to pay the money back.’
’Everything is for our child!’
The couple talked for a while longer before finally leaving the study.
The next day, when Arthur Sullivan arrived at the factory, he found a crowd of people gathered at the entrance to one of the workshops.
Police officers were standing guard at the entrance, which was cordoned off with yellow tape.
"What’s going on?" Arthur Sullivan spotted a familiar face in the crowd of onlookers and hurried over to tap the person on the shoulder and ask about the situation.
The person he’d tapped turned around. Seeing it was Arthur Sullivan, they jutted their chin toward the workshop, their voice low and mysterious.
"Someone’s dead in Workshop Two!"
