Chapter 343: Chapter 343: The Child Who Suddenly Fell Unconscious

Zoe Sawyer waved her hand dismissively, then added a reminder, "Remember to get in touch with the other search party. Tell them to call it a day and bring the parents over to the station.

How’s the child? Is he okay?"

Finally, Zoe Sawyer made sure to ask about the child’s condition.

’After all this commotion, he still hasn’t woken up. It feels a little strange.’

The team member cradled the child carefully, lifted a corner of the blanket, and placed a finger under the boy’s nose. He only relaxed after feeling the faint warmth of his breath.

"The kid’s fine. He’s still unconscious, probably drugged by the trafficker. I’m taking him back now." With that, the team member holding the child strode outside.

Two other officers flanked him as protection.

"Why don’t you come back through the main entrance?" Zoe Sawyer suggested, watching the team member’s retreating back after a moment of thought.

One of the officers who stayed behind shook his head, rejecting Zoe Sawyer’s suggestion. "That won’t work. There are definitely people watching the station. Coming back through the main entrance would be hard to explain.

We’re not far from the station. If we’re quick, it’s less than a two-minute trip. It’s better not to take the risk."

They had to nip any possibility of exposing Zoe Sawyer’s abilities in the bud.

"All right, then. Be safe." Since he put it that way, Zoe Sawyer couldn’t press the issue and could only offer another word of caution.

"Understood!" the lead officer nodded to show he got the message.

The two team members who had been standing in the back came forward. Flanking the human trafficker, they hoisted her up and started walking her toward the police station.

After confirming that nothing else was left behind, Zoe Sawyer closed the door and turned her attention to Evan Keller and Heath Hale’s situation.

Compared to the city-wide search happening on her end, Evan Keller and Heath Hale’s operation was much swifter.

The two men had each led a team out the front and back doors, and the surveillance personnel on both sides just assumed they were heading out to look for the child.

Moreover, the station hadn’t provided any valuable intelligence recently. The bits and pieces of daily life they’d been reporting back had already started to annoy their direct superior.

In fact, a few days ago, their superior had called to tell them that unless they had something extremely important, reporting in once a week was enough.

As a result, their work ethic had become noticeably more careless over the past two days.

They’d set up their equipment by the window, making sure it could film the station’s entrance, then casually concealed it before lying down on the bed to play games.

Then, at night, they’d review the morning’s footage at ten times the speed, and once they confirmed there was nothing of value, they deleted the video.

Even so, no one had discovered them, let alone come to arrest them.

Their days consisted of eating, sleeping, and playing games when they were awake. They had no other duties besides surveillance and didn’t have to worry about being caught.

This lax lifestyle had made them let their guard down. So when they noticed Evan Keller and Heath Hale coming out, they instinctively assumed the officers were going after the human trafficker.

It wasn’t until the police burst through the door, pinning them to the floor with their hands cuffed behind them, that they realized with a shock they had been exposed all along.

They wanted to argue, but the sight of the camera aimed squarely at the police station made the words die in their throats.

In the end, they could only hang their heads in defeat as they were escorted back to the station.

Their two landlords had only thought their tenants were homebodies; they never imagined they were secretly taking pictures of the police station.

Terrified, both landlords scrambled to explain that they knew nothing about their tenants’ activities.

"What’s the situation? Are you going to interrogate them?" Zoe Sawyer asked, looking at Evan Keller and Heath Hale who had just returned to the office.

Evan Keller shook his head. "Not yet. Their guard is up right now. We’ll separate them, lock them up, and let them stew for a while. They’ll start to unravel on their own."

They would both start to wonder why no one was coming to question them. ’Did the other guy confess everything? Will he try to pin all the blame and dirty work on me?’

Under the influence of such anxious speculation, when the time was right, they would be brought in for interrogation.

All it would take is a stern face and a slightly harsh tone, and most people would cooperate completely, answering whatever they were asked.

In the meantime, the police could also use this period to keep an eye on their boss’s situation. They might even uncover something new.

Zoe Sawyer nodded and didn’t pay the matter any more attention.

’Besides, if they needed her help later, Evan Keller would definitely come find her.’

’There was no need for her to waste too much energy on these two right now.’

Just then, a commotion erupted from the courtyard outside, punctuated by the unusually shrill cry of a woman.

The three of them exchanged a glance and moved closer to the window, wanting to see what was happening outside.

They saw a woman clinging desperately to her child, her grip so tight it was as if she wanted to merge the infant into her own flesh and blood.

The surrounding police officers were all trying to reason with her, attempting to take the child from her arms, but without exception, she blocked them with her body.

Zoe Sawyer noticed the color of the swaddling blanket in the woman’s arms. ’Isn’t that the same one the child rescued from the trafficker was wearing?’

’Also, with the force the woman was using, why wasn’t the child making a sound?’

’Could a newborn baby really withstand that kind of pressure?’

It wasn’t just Zoe Sawyer; Evan Keller and Heath Hale, standing beside her, also sensed something was wrong.

"The child hasn’t made a sound this whole time. That’s definitely not normal," Heath Hale said with a frown.

A bad feeling flashed through all three of their minds.

The next second, the woman collapsed limply to the ground. A female officer standing nearby quickly took the child from her arms and began administering first aid.

A car sped to a stop at the entrance, and the female officer rushed aboard with the child.

The police car raced to the hospital at top speed.

The child’s father just stood to the side, looking utterly helpless. It was only after another female officer helped his wife up that he seemed to snap out of it, hurriedly taking his wife from the officer’s arms.

Soon, another police car pulled up to the station entrance.

"I’ll take you to the hospital. You’re the child’s parents; you need to be there with him."

A colleague poked his head out of the car window and waved them over.

Just then, an old woman came stumbling in from outside. Seeing the unconscious woman, she rushed over and slapped her across the face.

"My grandson is in the hospital, and you’re here sleeping! I’ll beat you to death!"

The crisp sound of the slap was clearly audible to Zoe Sawyer and the others in the office.

Moreover, the reason for the assault sounded utterly absurd.

Seeing what his mother had done and remembering they were at a police station, the man quickly tried to stop her. "Mom! Xiao Jin fainted from grief!

Let’s not worry about this now! We need to go to the hospital and check on the baby!"
