Chapter 307: Chapter 307: Boss, the Police Are Here

"No matter what, we’re running out of time. We have to notify the police department in that jurisdiction immediately.

Before a fire starts, we need to have them send people to check on the situation right away," the Director said, clapping his hands. Once all eyes were on him, he stood up and spoke.

It was already approaching noon, and the fire was predicted to start sometime after ten o’clock. They had to act fast.

With that, the Director rushed off to his office.

"Are we going to this one?" Zoe Sawyer asked, a conflicted look on her face. For the past few days, because they were being watched from outside, the Director and the others had forbidden her from using her ’door’ ability to travel to and from the sites.

To avoid exposure, she usually just provided the location, and Evan Keller would take a team there.

"We’re pretty far from the factory in question. Without using a door, we’d be too late whether we took a plane or the high-speed rail," Evan Keller said, shaking his head. "That’s why the Director wants us on standby here.

If an emergency pops up and they need support, then we’ll go through a door."

Zoe Sawyer ruffled her hair in frustration. "I guess that works. It’s just... having those people watching us from outside is really getting in the way.

Can’t we just find a chance to take them out?"

The words were barely out of her mouth when Heath Hale, who was beside her, chimed in, "We haven’t figured out who’s backing them yet. For now, we leave them be."

Most importantly, those two were only sent over a few days ago. If they arrested them now...

...it would be like announcing to the masterminds, ’We know what you’re up to.’

Right now, we know who their agents are, but they don’t know what we’re planning. If we play this right, we might be able to pull one thread and unravel their entire network, catching their other agents hidden within the country.

Zoe Sawyer shrugged helplessly. ’They’re just looking out for me,’ she thought. ’I’ll just do as they say.’

"Don’t worry," Heath Hale said, standing beside Zoe Sawyer and noticing her expression. He offered a few words of comfort in a gentle tone, "Time is a little tight, but we caught it early. We still have a chance to fix everything."

This wasn’t one of Zoe Sawyer’s last-minute warnings. They had plenty of time to resolve the situation.

Soon, a call from the Director came through on the office landline. He wanted Zoe Sawyer and the others to come to his office.

"You all keep working on what you’re doing. I’ll call you if we need you," Evan Keller instructed the others in the office.

"Understood!"

The others in the office chorused in agreement.

Zoe Sawyer and the other five quickly made their way to the Director’s office. As soon as they walked in, they saw a massive video projection on the wall.

"You must be Sawyer," the man in the video said when he saw Zoe Sawyer enter. His stern expression softened considerably. "Thank you for the warning. I’ve already organized a team to go and check out the situation." He nodded in Zoe’s direction as a greeting.

Seeing Zoe Sawyer and her team enter, the Director briefly introduced the man on the screen. "This is Director Garland. He’s in charge of that jurisdiction."

Zoe Sawyer and the others greeted Director Garland, then took the seats that had been prepared for them at the Director’s gesture.

Director Garland didn’t have time for small talk. After the brief introductions, he picked up the discussion where they’d left off. "According to Sawyer, firefighters went in to put out a fire before the explosion. That can only mean the company’s manager concealed the true situation."

Zoe Sawyer glanced at Heath Hale, a puzzled look on her face. ’She didn’t get it. Why would firefighters going in mean the manager had concealed the truth?’

Sensing her confusion, Heath Hale explained in a low voice, "Some dangerous chemicals are highly flammable and explosive. They have specific, designated storage requirements. If they aren’t handled properly, accidents can easily happen.

The explosion you saw was likely caused by improper storage and an excessive quantity of these chemicals."

’Improper handling, excessive stockpiling.’

’If that’s the case, then it makes sense that the manager wouldn’t dare tell the firefighters the truth.’

’They were afraid of being held responsible. They probably thought the firefighters would just put out the fire, and if no major accident occurred, the whole thing would blow over.’

’They never expected two subsequent explosions that would end up costing those firefighters their lives.’

Zoe Sawyer nodded, her understanding dawning. ’So that’s what happened. It all makes sense now.’

Just then, someone knocked on the door on Director Garland’s end of the call. A person entered and said a few words to him.

The audio was muffled and unclear due to the distance, so Zoe Sawyer and her team couldn’t make out what was said.

They saw Director Garland nod, then he looked back at the camera. "Alright, my team is on its way. Do you want to watch?"

The Director didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he turned to Zoe Sawyer and asked, "Sawyer, do you want to watch?"

Zoe Sawyer nodded excitedly. Even though she knew they could handle it, she wanted to see the problem resolved with her own eyes.

But still, she had to ask, "Is that allowed?"

"Of course it is," Director Garland said with a wave of his hand, dispelling Zoe Sawyer’s hesitation.

A moment later, the video feed switched from Director Garland’s face to another camera’s perspective.

"They’re on their way there now," Director Garland’s voice explained. "They should arrive in about ten minutes." Soon, everyone’s attention was fixed on the video feed.

Meanwhile, in one of the dispatched vehicles, a young police officer couldn’t help but ask, "Why the sudden order to investigate that logistics plant?"

The order was so abrupt, it left them all scratching their heads.

’Didn’t we have something else scheduled for today?’

"You ask too many questions. Just follow orders," his partner said, smacking him on the back of the head and giving him an exasperated look.

The young officer who had spoken rubbed the back of his head, embarrassed, and gave a sheepish grin.

Soon, the car arrived at its destination.

"Can I help you, officers?" The warehouse security guard’s pupils contracted the moment he saw a team of police stepping out of their vehicle. He moved to greet them, even as one hand gestured furtively behind his back.

Inside the guardhouse, another guard saw the signal. He immediately stopped, pulled back the foot he was about to step out with, and snatched the landline phone to make a call.

After two rings, someone on the other end picked up.

An irritated male voice came through the line. "What do you want? Why are you calling me now?"

The guard’s voice was cautious. He glanced at his partner, who was still talking with the police, and whispered quickly, "Boss! The cops are here!"

’The cops are here!’

Those four words made the man on the other end of the line jump to his feet.

"What did you say?!"
