My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 251: You Sell Me, I Sell You
Chapter 251: Chapter 251: You Sell Me, I Sell You
A team member sitting next to Evan Keller had a face full of guilt. If he had just been a little more careful, this wouldn’t have happened.
Captain Keller wouldn’t have gotten hurt.
"Given the circumstances, you made the right call. No need to feel guilty," Evan Keller said, waving his hand dismissively. "Besides, this injury isn’t that serious. It’ll heal up quick."
The moment he moved to save the person, he knew he might get hurt. Besides, compared to losing a limb, a small wound like this was nothing.
"What happened? A chase? Why didn’t you call me?" Zoe Sawyer’s expression was one of helpless frustration. ’My ability would have been perfect for a pursuit. Why wouldn’t they use such a convenient tool?’
"It all happened too fast. There was no time," Evan Keller said with a wave of his hand, explaining the day’s mission. "Remember that arsonist we caught a few days ago, Chase Rowan? He suddenly had a meltdown this morning, shouting something like, ’So that’s how it is! No wonder!’"
"Then he told us he wanted to turn informant. Said he knew where another member was, what his name was, what he looked like, and told us to hurry up and bring the guy in."
Heath Hale raised an eyebrow, quickly piecing it together. "So, the one who tipped us off about Chase Rowan’s location was this other member. And Rowan figured it out and decided to report him in the exact same way?"
Evan Keller nodded. That was exactly right.
"So what was the result? Did you catch him?" Zoe Sawyer was very concerned about this and asked anxiously.
"We got him. I got this wound during the car chase," Evan Keller explained. "But he must have known he couldn’t escape. He jerked the steering wheel and charged straight at us, trying to take us all down with him."
"Luckily, we dodged him. But he was going too fast to swerve in time and crashed into the guardrail. His injuries are severe, and he’s unconscious now." Evan Keller recounted the harrowing ordeal in the most nonchalant tone he could manage.
The one silver lining was that after getting the tip, they had coordinated with the traffic police to quickly clear the road of other vehicles. Otherwise, the casualties and property damage would have been far worse.
As for why they didn’t ask Zoe Sawyer for help, it was because the chase started too abruptly. Besides, her ’door’ wasn’t practical for a car to pass through, so she wouldn’t have been much help.
In fact, calling her might have just wasted precious time.
That’s why Evan Keller never even considered the option of asking Zoe Sawyer for help during the pursuit.
Zoe Sawyer pressed her lips together. Evan Keller’s injuries were a clear sign of how dire the situation had been. If they hadn’t reacted as quickly as they did, they’d probably be standing in a hospital right now.
At the same time, Zoe felt a pang of regret for not being able to help.
Noticing the guilt on Zoe Sawyer’s face, Sean Hughes quickly changed the subject. "What’s the story with that suspect? What did the doctors say?"
Evan Keller had also sensed Zoe’s mood. He followed Sean’s lead and shifted the topic to Chase Rowan and the suspect. "The suspect took a heavy hit. It’s hard to say when he’ll wake up. Before we came back, we showed his photo to Chase Rowan, who confirmed it was him."
"He also gave us the suspect’s name and said the guy acted so crazily mainly to protect his family."
According to Chase Rowan’s explanation, Evan Keller learned that the families of their organization’s officers all lived in an area under the direct control of their boss.
If any of the officers showed signs of disloyalty, their families could be used as leverage to keep them in line.
Even though the suspect was caught, his willingness to go down fighting might indeed appease the boss’s anger, reducing the chances of her taking it out on his family.
As he said this, Chase Rowan had lifted his chin smugly. He, fortunately, didn’t have that problem.
Otherwise, once the boss confirmed he was the informant, his family would find themselves in one of her sweatshops before the next day was over.
"Don’t worry. Keith Garrison, Shane Lynch, and the other two have already been handed over to the higher-ups because of the Ray Reid situation."
"When the interrogation yields results, Elder Crowe will get us the conclusions." Evan Keller waved his hand. Because it involved Ray Reid’s mission, Elder Crowe and the chief couldn’t share more details with them.
However, considering Zoe Sawyer’s unique status and the team’s contribution to the case, they would be briefed once a conclusion was reached.
As for Ray Reid, he had been discreetly moved to a dorm at the police department, with someone assigned to look after him, so the chief wouldn’t have to worry.
The group got each other up to speed, discussing everything that had happened that day. Only after confirming everything was resolved did they finally breathe a collective sigh of relief.
"Alright, you guys need to get to the infirmary and clean those wounds. Waiting will only make it worse." Once they were certain Evan Keller wasn’t seriously hurt, Zoe Sawyer and Sean Hughes’s expressions hardened. They hauled him out of his chair and herded the group of injured men toward the infirmary.
「The next morning.」
When Zoe Sawyer arrived at the office, she saw Sean Hughes sitting at his desk with a grim expression, his fingers flying across his phone’s screen.
"What’s wrong?" Zoe Sawyer asked, walking over.
Sean Hughes didn’t answer right away. After finishing a long text and sending it, he tossed his phone onto the desk. He looked exhausted, but his tone was exceptionally irritable. "It’s nothing. My younger cousin is acting up, and my aunt wants me to have a good talk with her."
"But that little brat is completely out of control! I can look past the puppy love—it’s normal for teens to have crushes. But she went and dyed her hair green without telling anyone! Then she bought a used motorcycle to modify and goes out tearing up the streets on it at night!"
"I was just talking to her, and you know what she said? She called me an old fossil and said it’s normal that I don’t get it!"
The more Sean Hughes spoke, the angrier he got, finally slamming his palm on the desk. He looked like he wanted to storm home right that second.
A rebellious phase in high school was normal, and Sean Hughes could understand that. After all, he had been quite a handful himself.
But her recent behavior was just too much! And doesn’t she know how dangerous modified bikes are?
"Okay, okay, calm down. Just try to talk to your cousin again," Zoe said. It was a family matter, so she couldn’t say much and could only sit beside him and try to soothe his anger.
Meanwhile, a girl with a shock of green hair and a black denim jacket guiltily slid her phone back into her pocket. Her mind was already racing, calculating what kind of apology she’d need to make tonight to avoid getting a beating.
"Damn, Zara Zane, you’re pretty tough, standing up to your police-officer cousin like that. You’re getting bold," the girl next to her, who had witnessed the whole thing, said with a pat on her shoulder, praising her.
Zara Zane straightened up and let out a couple of smug hums.
Just as she was about to say something, a young woman ran in, looking panicked.
"Zara, did you bring the stuff? Come with me to the public restroom over there."
