My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 246: The Door Is Urging Me to Open It
Chapter 246: Chapter 246: The Door Is Urging Me to Open It
"Is this a case of infighting?"
That was the first thing that came to Heath Hale’s mind when he heard the news.
Director Miller had only questioned a neighbor, which confirmed his and Heath Hale’s suspicion, but he hadn’t taken any further action.
But just a short while later, they received an anonymous text message about a man acting strangely.
And it just happened to be the very man they were about to arrest. The coincidence was too great; it was hard not to suspect infighting.
"Let’s not worry about whether it’s infighting for now. Let’s just catch the guy first," Evan Keller said, waggling his phone.
Before he even got back to the office, he had already notified the officers in that jurisdiction to bring the man in.
If all went well, they should hear something in about half an hour.
Sure enough, less than half an hour later, Evan Keller received a call from Director Miller.
Director Miller’s previously frustrated tone was gone, replaced by a hint of excitement. "Evan Keller, we got him! He’s at the station now. Just wait for our good news!"
When he first received Evan Keller’s call, Director Miller had been a little hesitant.
Making a hasty arrest was risky. If they were right, great. But if they were wrong, it would be a disaster.
Not only could it tip off their real targets, but it would also make the public question the department’s competence.
However, when Chase Rowan, who had been walking out of the complex with a duffel bag, saw police officers heading straight for him, he instinctively dropped the bag and ran.
His guilty attempt to flee was all the confirmation Director Miller needed to know that Evan Keller had been right.
He and his team quickly apprehended the man.
He waited until they were safely back at the station before calling Evan Keller with an update.
"As long as you caught him, that’s what matters. I’ll be waiting for good news, Director Miller." Evan Keller breathed a sigh of relief once the arrest was confirmed. They exchanged a few more words before he hung up.
Even with enough manpower and the workload spread thin, it still took nearly three days to process everything.
With the exception of Keith Garrison and two others who remained tight-lipped, the rest had all spilled everything they knew.
"Finally done," Sean Hughes said, leaning back in his chair, his voice laced with exhaustion. "I hope we don’t get any new cases for a few days so we can get some rest."
The interrogations had gone smoothly, but they had to run around to all the locations mentioned in the confessions to verify the information.
After all that running around, they still had to write several reports.
By the end of it all, Sean Hughes felt like he desperately needed a full day off.
"Seconded!"
Several people raised their hands in agreement, and some even started discussing whether to order bubble tea to relax.
Zoe Sawyer poked Heath Hale beside her. When he looked over, she said sheepishly, "Uh, so... I think we have a case. It’s urging me on."
As she spoke, Zoe Sawyer pointed to the door of another room.
This particular ability had only manifested after they caught the arsonist, Chase Rowan.
’At first, I thought I was just imagining things,’ Zoe Sawyer had thought. ’How could a door be conscious and urge me to open it?’
But the feeling grew stronger and stronger.
Zoe Sawyer had no choice but to try opening the door, and in doing so, she managed to prevent an impending chain-reaction car crash.
It was from that moment that Zoe Sawyer knew for sure her ability had evolved.
Through later experiments, she determined that the ability had a limited range.
It wouldn’t activate if she was outside this range, and the scenes she saw through the doors were always of imminent incidents.
She couldn’t use it to travel to the scene, nor could she use it to see into the past.
That was why Zoe Sawyer felt so guilty when she heard Sean Hughes and the others praying for a few days without a new case.
Zoe Sawyer had spoken quietly, so no one other than Heath Hale had heard her.
Heath Hale sighed helplessly. ’Well, there goes our break.’
"Sounds like it. Let’s go see what’s happening." Heath Hale was the first to stand, following Zoe Sawyer to the door.
At the sight of them moving, Sean Hughes and the others groaned in silent despair.
The moment Zoe Sawyer opened the door, a bright light from the other side forced her to shut her eyes.
But the intense light was quickly switched off, followed by a faint rustling.
Under Heath Hale’s worried gaze, Zoe Sawyer rubbed her eyes and then continued to watch everything happening on the other side of the door.
She saw a slender woman in a black, form-fitting outfit standing in the room, her gaze fixed obsessively on the messy bed.
Then, the woman tiptoed to the adjoining bathroom, turned on the faucet, and washed the dust off herself.
Once she was dry, she lay down on the bed with a blissful expression, burying her face in a pillow and inhaling deeply.
A few minutes later, the woman got up and checked the pinhole cameras she’d installed in various hidden corners of the room. She breathed a sigh of relief only after confirming they were all still running.
Immediately after, the woman picked up the chopsticks on the table and ate a few bites of the cold takeout.
After all that, the woman carefully climbed on top of the wardrobe and then up into the room’s drop ceiling.
Throughout the entire process, the woman was extremely careful, checking her surroundings for any traces she might have left behind after each step.
When she finished, aside from the slightly messier bed and a little less takeout on the table, nothing else looked out of the ordinary.
Zoe Sawyer gasped. ’What the hell is this?’
’A stalker?’
’Or some obsessed admirer of the owner?’
’But at most, this is just breaking and entering. Why was the door so desperate for me to open it?’
’Could something else be about to happen?’
Zoe Sawyer couldn’t figure it out, but as she continued to watch, she soon had her answer.
Less than half an hour after the woman had hidden, a young man and woman walked in, arm in arm.
They were both carrying a lot of shopping bags.
The young woman set her bags on the floor and sank onto the sofa, sighing contentedly. "Babe, we bought so much. That should be almost everything we need for the wedding, right?"
The man who had entered with her gathered the bags from the floor, then poured his girlfriend a glass of water. Handing it to her, he said gently, "Yeah, we’ve got pretty much everything. Now you can just relax, focus on all your beauty stuff, and be the most beautiful bride."
Hearing her boyfriend’s words, the young woman covered her face, laughing shyly.
’A wedding.’
’The wedding she’d been looking forward to for so long.’
’She had to prepare herself to be in the best possible shape to greet that happy day.’
The young woman lowered her hands and looked at the man beside her, her tone hesitant. "Babe... that woman who’s been harassing you... is she still hanging around your office?"
"Hasn’t she given up yet?"
