Chapter 233: Chapter 233: Everything Is Just Right

It was unclear what was said on the other end of the line, but the man’s expression grew exceptionally excited.

Before hanging up, he said excitedly, "Don’t worry, Big Sis, I guarantee I’ll get this done! Just wait for my good news!"

After hanging up, the man looked at the nearby houses with a hint of regret. "You all are lucky tonight."

With that, he folded his butterfly knife, stuck his hands in his pockets, and hurried away from the remote little village.

They had no idea they had just escaped a disaster.

For the next week, Joey and the few others who had been specially transferred with him were in training at the provincial bureau. Their daily schedules and routes were fixed, giving them no opportunity to dig up any other information.

Thinking of the increasingly frequent reminder texts he’d received over the past few days, Joey was getting antsy. He wished he could glue his ear to the underside of their desks and eavesdrop on them around the clock.

Remembering the call he’d gotten last night, Joey sat at his desk and couldn’t help but stomp his foot in frustration.

’This won’t work. I have to find some time to chat with the people around here these next few days, see if I can overhear anything.’

’If I don’t get some information to them soon, those people will definitely not let me off the hook!’

Remembering the threat he received before hanging up last night, Joey couldn’t help but shiver.

’No way. I don’t want to experience that kind of punishment, a fate worse than death.’

’I have to pry some information out of them just to tide things over!’

Joey kept his head down, working on the task at hand while his mind raced, searching for a way out of this predicament.

Just then, there was a knock on the office door. Joey looked up and saw a man standing in the doorway.

"Got a minute? Help me move some things to my office. Are you the only one here?" The man scanned the entire office, then furrowed his brow in confusion.

Only then did Joey realize that the other four were nowhere to be seen.

Joey’s gaze fell on the man in the doorway, his eyes narrowing slightly. ’If I remember correctly, this should be Evan Keller from the Varden West Precinct.’

’Back then, he cracked a lot of major cases and arrested quite a few of Big Sis’s people.’

’Later, Big Sis had me investigate the Varden West Precinct, but I came up with nothing.’

’I can’t believe I’m running into him here.’

’Wait!’

’If I go with him, maybe I’ll be able to hear something?!’

Joey’s eyes lit up instantly. He quickly replied, "Yes! I have time! What do you need me to move?"

He ran over to Evan Keller’s side as he spoke.

"A stack of files. They’re a bit heavy, so be careful." Evan Keller picked up a nearby stack and placed it in Joey’s hands, then picked up another stack himself and started walking toward his office.

Joey followed behind Evan Keller, his eyes darting toward the files in his hands.

But all the files were sealed tight. However, as he walked, the movement caused a few pages to peek out.

Joey glanced down and saw the words "serial killer."

There were some smaller characters below them, but before Joey could get a clear look, they had arrived at their destination.

As soon as he entered, Joey heard the words "plaza," "ambush," and "surround."

A group of people was gathered around a whiteboard, deep in a heated discussion.

Upon seeing Joey walk in, they all stopped talking in unison and just stared at him.

’Heard some bombshell news right as I walked in, and it sounds like an operational plan.’

Joey felt a surge of excitement. Just as he hoped to hear more, Evan Keller stopped in his tracks.

He then motioned for Joey to put the files down and leave.

’I want to linger, but that would be way too obvious!’

’It would just make everyone notice something’s off about me!’

Having no choice, Joey reluctantly walked out. The moment the door closed, he heard the heated discussion start up again inside.

’What do I do, what do I do, what do I do.’

Joey stood outside the door, wringing his hands.

’Whatever. I’ll just use what I just heard to placate them for now. I’ll worry about the rest later!’

’Maybe in a couple of days, I’ll find something even more valuable!’

’Right!’

’That’s the plan!’

Joey gave a small wave to no one in particular, then started walking again, leaving the area and heading back to his temporary office.

The moment Joey left, the office door opened.

"So? Do you think he believed what he heard? Will he report it back to them?" Zoe Sawyer and Vivian Dunn came out of the adjacent room, peeking out from the office doorway just in time to see the back of Joey as he turned a corner.

Sean Hughes stood to the side, arms crossed, a trace of hesitation in his voice. "It’s hard to say. If he calms down and thinks it over when he gets back, he might realize something’s not right."

"But we also can’t rule out the possibility that he’s desperate right now, anxious to appease his handlers, so he won’t have the time or the inclination to verify the information’s authenticity."

"But either way, we’re prepared. No need to worry."

As he spoke, Sean Hughes, who had been somewhat worried, thought of their arrangements and instantly relaxed.

’If I can think of these potential problems, the chief and the others definitely can too.’

’Since they came up with this plan, they must have a backup.’

’We just need to follow the steps we’ve already planned out!’

Just as Sean Hughes had said, after returning to his office, Joey sensed that something was off.

’That information... it came at the perfect time. The timing is just too coincidental!’

’Just when I desperately needed some information, Evan Keller showed up, had me move some files, and then I just so happened to overhear that news.’

’Could it be? Have they discovered my identity?’

Joey’s heart skipped a beat.

The next second, he shook his head frantically. ’Impossible, impossible.’

’If they really found out I was a mole, they wouldn’t have transferred me here. They’d have found an excuse to get rid of me.’

Thinking about the files he had access to at the precinct, Joey once again dismissed the possibility that he had been discovered.

"So, was it really a coincidence?" Joey muttered to himself in confusion, sitting at his desk.

The words had barely left his mouth when someone next to him chimed in, "What coincidence?"

Joey shot his head up and saw the four people who had come with him to the provincial bureau for training.

He recalled that when Evan Keller had come looking for him earlier, these four had all happened to be absent.

"Nothing." Then, Joey asked tentatively, "Where were you four just now? Why didn’t you ask me to come along?"

The man in the middle ran a hand through his hair, his tone full of envy as he looked at Joey. "On our way back, we suddenly got called over by someone to move a bunch of files. We just finished. You got lucky, you didn’t have to help."

’Could it really be a coincidence?’
