My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 227: Undercover Joey
Chapter 227: Chapter 227: Undercover Joey
The moment she finished speaking, Evan Keller and the others got excited, their eyes darting around.
Ben Miller, however, was a bit confused. ’Handing him another solved case?’
’Can you just solve cases that easily?’
"Where? Where?"
Even after a sleepless night, the mention of a new case instantly energized Sean Hughes.
"Up ahead on the right, the one in the blue jacket, baseball cap, and mask—he’s a fugitive wanted for fraud," Zoe Sawyer said, stretching nonchalantly before quickly zeroing in on the target.
She described the suspect’s attire to the others.
The next second, Evan Keller and Sean Hughes dashed out in unison, tackling the man to the ground.
A few team members standing next to Ben Miller sighed with disappointment.
’We couldn’t beat them to it!’
Evan Keller ripped off the man’s cap while Sean Hughes, using the information Zoe Sawyer provided, found the man’s wanted poster in the police database.
"Well, I’ll be damned. It really is you.
You’ve been on the run for a year, and now you’re caught!" Evan Keller hauled the man up from the ground, compared his face to the wanted poster, and after confirming his identity, escorted him over to Ben Miller.
Ben Miller scrambled to take custody of the suspect. By the time he had sent the man back to the station and returned, Zoe Sawyer’s group was already gone.
"How did you spot that fugitive?" Sean Hughes asked, looking at Zoe Sawyer curiously.
"A couple of days ago, Beau was practicing drawing portraits and happened to draw this guy. When he was walking over just now, his mask was pulled down to his chin. He only yanked it up frantically when he saw us standing by the door.
But in those few seconds, I recognized him," Zoe Sawyer said, placing her hands on her hips with a smug little hum.
’It was a bit of a fluke, but hey, a good result is a good result!’
"Impressive, impressive."
Evan Keller and the others played along enthusiastically, clapping and showering her with praise.
Afterward, the group found an abandoned, dilapidated house. After making sure no one was around, they opened a door and returned to the police department.
Because they had pulled an all-nighter, the Director gave them the morning off to catch up on sleep with a wave of his hand.
"I finally get why you guys catch up on sleep every chance you get," Hayden Shaw said, sitting in the office. A look of understanding crossed his face as he observed the obviously drained expressions on Sean Hughes and the others.
Before being transferred, they had been given a heads-up that working under Zoe Sawyer meant being on standby twenty-four hours a day, as anything could happen at any moment.
Back then, they had just assumed it meant more cases, a busier workload, and the occasional all-nighter.
Today, however, Hayden Shaw’s assumptions were completely overturned.
They had never experienced a situation where a new case popped up on the same night another one had just closed!
’Isn’t this pace a little too intense?!’
"Standard procedure. You’ll get used to it," Sean Hughes said with a wave of his hand. He pulled out his nap cot, set it up in the adjacent office, and went to sleep.
Although he could have gone back to the dorms, it would be too much trouble to rush back for an emergency.
The rest of the group followed his example. Catching up on sleep was the most important thing; who knew when the next case would arrive!
Meanwhile, in a conference room on the other side, the atmosphere was tense.
"Mills, that person in your bureau is still there, right? Find an excuse to transfer him over here," Elder Crowe said, looking at a man sitting not far away.
The director, addressed as Mills, nodded. "He is. We haven’t alerted him. He probably still has no idea we know he’s a mole."
Besides, only a few key people in the entire department knew his identity as a mole.
They had also deliberately excluded him from certain key missions to prevent any possibility of him accessing more classified information.
Everyone else still treated him as a normal colleague.
As a result, the mole hadn’t suspected a thing.
"Good. The time is right. Transfer him over. Let’s see if we can follow this trail and catch the big fish behind him." Elder Crowe’s fingers tapped lightly on the table as he quickly laid out the plan. "But assign him to a post far away from Zoe Sawyer’s team. Don’t let him get near them."
They had always been reactive—only finding out about what the enemy had done after the fact and then dealing with the fallout.
Now that Zoe Sawyer’s abilities had been upgraded, there might be even bigger surprises in store.
They had to change this passive dynamic!
Director Miller and the others naturally understood the significance of Elder Crowe’s plan. They nodded in agreement.
After the meeting, a portly director slung his arm around Director Miller’s shoulder, his tone chummy. "My bureau still has a lot of cold cases. When are you free to let us borrow Zoe Sawyer for a bit?"
"Get outta here. The Provincial Bureau has plenty of cold cases of its own," Director Miller flatly rejected the portly director’s invitation.
’Are you kidding me? Sending Zoe Sawyer over to help would be like throwing a meat bun at a dog—she’d be gone for good!’
’If there’s a first, there will be a second!’
’If I agree to this one, it’ll be hard to refuse the next!’
’And if this keeps up, who knows, one day Zoe Sawyer might just decide to stay at some other bureau and not come back.’
’That would be a huge loss for me!’
’No way, I absolutely cannot set this precedent!’
The portly director, rejected once again, wasn’t discouraged. He simply planned to find another opportunity to ask.
’As long as I’m persistent enough, he’ll have to agree eventually!’
Meanwhile, Director Miller, who had just been in the meeting with Elder Crowe, wasted no time after returning. He called in several of his most capable subordinates and relayed Elder Crowe’s instructions.
"Just one person would be too obvious. Let’s find a few more and use ’training’ as the excuse," one of the men said, rubbing his chin.
’Suddenly transferring one person to the provincial bureau, and that person happens to be the mole? He’s bound to get suspicious.’
’It’s better to just send a group over together.’
"Good idea. We’ll use training as the pretext," Director Miller nodded. He looked at the four people standing before him and said, "Alright, each of you pick one person. That’ll make a group of five.
Give me the list of names when you’re done. I’m going to report to Elder Crowe now."
Since it was for "training," they had to make the follow-up arrangements thorough to avoid arousing suspicion.
"Yes, sir!"
Soon enough, Joey, the mole, received the news that he was being sent to the Provincial Bureau for training. He was told to hand over his current work and report first thing tomorrow morning.
"Me?" Joey’s expression was hesitant. ’I’m not the best in the bureau. Why was I chosen?’
But when he saw the envious looks from those around him, as well as the four other people not far away who were also packing their things, Joey suppressed the doubt that had just surfaced.
’Going to the Provincial Bureau might be a good thing. Maybe I can dig up some useful information!’
Thinking of the boss lady, from whom he hadn’t received any clear instructions in a long time, Joey gritted his teeth. ’Time to risk it all!’
He didn’t want to be a pawn they could just throw away!
People who got abandoned never came to a good end!
