My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 173: Closing the Case and Zoe Sawyer’s New Mission
Chapter 173: Chapter 173: Closing the Case and Zoe Sawyer’s New Mission
Lynn Grant flashed her badge at John, then had the surrounding officers take him away.
The officers standing behind Zoe Sawyer and the others breathed a sigh of relief once they were sure Lynn Grant’s team had taken the man into custody.
"Time is of the essence. Let’s get the procedures started. Compare the bodily fluids from this man with the samples from the first victim and see if we have a match," Captain Scott said, unable to wait. He wished he could rush over right then and witness the results firsthand.
’This was the result they had been waiting for after half a month of investigation!’
’I want to go over and wait for it now!’
"Captain, don’t be so anxious. Let’s wait for a reply from our colleagues over there first!" Shea said soothingly, grabbing her agitated captain’s arm.
’Besides, it takes time for the DNA results to come in!’
"No need. We can take the high-speed train over right now. By the time the results are in, we’ll be just about there," Captain Scott said, shaking his head and rejecting Shea’s suggestion.
The others thought about it and agreed.
They booked their tickets, packed their things, and headed for the high-speed rail station.
And things turned out to be much simpler than expected.
The moment the arrest was made, the chief submitted a detention request to the provincial bureau. It was quickly approved, and the case was reported to the Ministry of Public Security and the Foreign Affairs Department within the stipulated time frame.
Once they confirmed all procedures were legal and by the book, Lynn Grant immediately had a vial of John’s blood drawn for matching.
Because it was a rush job, the comparison target was clear, and the sample quality was high, the lab produced the results in just three hours.
Seeing the confirmation on the report, everyone at the Varden West Precinct erupted in cheers.
They hadn’t expected that not only had they helped Lynn Grant resolve a life-or-death matter, but they had also caught a serial killer.
"Okay! I understand. We’re already on the high-speed train; we’ll be there soon." After hanging up, Evan Keller saw his colleagues looking at him expectantly. He nodded at them and said, "It’s a match. John is the killer!"
"That’s great!"
"We finally got him!"
The others clenched their fists in excitement. ’We finally got him! Now we can give the victim and her family some closure!’
After learning the results were in, Captain Scott’s team couldn’t wait a second longer. The moment their car stopped at the precinct, they bolted out and ran toward the interrogation room.
Several others, all desperate to know the truth, followed close behind.
When they got there, Captain Scott discovered that other officers from the Varden West Precinct were also waiting outside.
Inside, the interrogation was already underway.
The officer interrogating John laid several photos of the victims in front of him. "You remember them, don’t you?" he said, his tone firm. "Tell me. Why did you kill them?"
John started to deny it, but the interrogating officer slapped the DNA results down in front of him.
Faced with a mountain of irrefutable evidence, John, who had intended to argue, finally lowered his head and confessed to everything.
"Why did you go after them?" the interrogator demanded, slamming his hand on the table and glaring at John.
"Because they were beautiful," John said with an indifferent shrug.
The broken Mandarin he had used earlier was suddenly much more fluent.
As he confessed, the full truth of the case was laid bare.
John was a crew member for a foreign airline that flew long-haul routes. Since he usually had layovers of two or three days, he decided to look for some "fun."
The people around him knew what he was like. When they heard about John’s "grand ambitions," they just warned him not to go too far.
If he got into real trouble, they weren’t going to come to the precinct to bail him out.
To make it easier to deceive people, John had even found a pilot’s epaulets at his company.
In the city where he found his first victim, John would select a target, then use his looks and his broken Mandarin to pretend to be a tourist who needed help getting to the police station.
The victim told him to wait a moment. Just as she was about to look around for a patrolling officer, he used a handkerchief to knock her unconscious and carried her to a location he had scouted out in advance.
Because passersby were all in a hurry, and because John deliberately used his body to shield the victim from view while he spoke to her, people passing by simply assumed the two of them knew each other and paid them no mind.
Having cased the area beforehand, John knew exactly where the security cameras were—and where they weren’t.
He wove through a series of small alleys, finally bringing the victim to a room he had prepared.
John had sadistic tendencies. To him, Asian women seemed easier to bully than the women from his own country. Their skin bruised more easily. In every way, they were more to his liking.
He just hadn’t expected it. He’d been pent up for a while and got carried away, not knowing when to stop. By the time he’d tormented her to death, John finally realized what he had done.
Panicked, he hastily threw on his clothes, gathered his things, and fled.
The next day, he left the city with the rest of the flight crew.
But one murder soon led to another.
A few days later, John felt the urge again.
His previous success made him feel he could get away with it, and he became addicted to the thrill of holding someone’s life in his hands.
And so, one after another, he used the same method to brutally murder several more innocent young women.
Learning from his first kill, John began to reduce any actions that might leave a trace.
It wasn’t until this time, when he set his sights on Lynn Grant and was caught in the act, that the case was finally declared solved.
"We finally caught him. Now we can finally face the families," Shea said, standing by the window. She had witnessed John’s entire confession, and she excitedly pumped her fist a few times.
’God, it was so hard looking at the victims’ families and their grieving eyes while the case was still unsolved!’
After John’s confession, the other officers’ shoulders, once held ramrod straight, finally slumped in relief.
Because it was so late, the chief just had Captain Scott and his team make makeshift beds on the office floor for the night.
Shea, meanwhile, went with Zoe Sawyer and Lynn Grant to stay the night in the dorms out back.
When Zoe Sawyer woke up the next morning, she found that Shea, who had slept beside her, was already gone.
"You’re awake? Shea left with Captain Scott and the others early this morning to catch the first high-speed train back. She said there were still some loose ends to tie up with the case and they couldn’t waste any time." Sean Hughes explained as he came in from outside, noticing Zoe Sawyer’s gaze fall on the empty bed where Shea had slept.
After Zoe Sawyer had finished freshening up, Sean Hughes waved her over.
"Come on, the chief is waiting for you. There’s something very important he needs to entrust to you!"
