Chapter 122: Chapter 122: Whoa! A Top-Tier Love Brain

Zoe Sawyer’s eyes widened in stunned disbelief after she heard what Vivian Dunn said.

"Go? Go crazy?!"

Vivian Dunn, perhaps noticing Zoe’s incredulous expression, nodded with absolute certainty. "That’s right. Go crazy. Our goal right now is to attract his attention."

The target liked to appear before people in difficult situations, playing the part of a savior.

He’d either generously offer a large sum of money to help them through their hardship, or he’d use his connections to solve their problems.

Once you were won over by his generosity, he’d start preaching his doctrines, using all sorts of tricks to lure you into joining.

He had different methods for different people.

If you needed money, he gave you money. If you were starved for affection, a crowd of warm "family members" would surround you, satisfying your every spiritual and material need until you felt like you’d found paradise.

But once people were truly in deep, that was when they showed their fangs.

First, they made you borrow money from friends and family in every way possible. When you couldn’t borrow anymore, they made you take out loans. And when you couldn’t get loans, there was only one last step. They were determined to squeeze every last drop of value out of you.

The key was, throughout this whole process, the victims didn’t think there was anything wrong. They just felt like they should sacrifice themselves for this big, warm family.

It wasn’t until they were completely worthless and cast aside that they realized they’d been living a lie from start to finish.

Most were consumed by regret.

"I get it." Zoe Sawyer rubbed her chin. She roughly understood her mission: help the colleague on the inside pass out evidence, and ideally, gather more evidence to expose the larger organization behind it.

’If I were going alone, I’d be scared,’ Zoe thought, ’but with Vivian Dunn by my side, I feel much safer.’

’Besides, I have the ability to protect myself. I’m much safer than anyone else would be.’

"So, when do I need to head out?" Zoe Sawyer asked, taking a deep breath.

Vivian Dunn glanced at her phone. "Let’s make some final preparations. We’re going back first."

Zoe Sawyer didn’t quite understand, but she followed Vivian Dunn upstairs and back home.

When she saw what Vivian handed her, Zoe’s expression turned hesitant. "This is what you meant by ’preparations’?"

’Embroidery? But I don’t know how!’

Vivian Dunn, needle and thread in hand, gestured at Zoe. "Whether it works or not, we have to try. If it’s a success, it’ll be a lot safer than you drawing a door in front of a surveillance camera."

’That’s a good point,’ Zoe thought. It made sense.

Zoe dug out one of her skirts and spread it out. She used a piece of chalk to draw the outline of a door large enough for a hand to pass through, followed by the pinyin abbreviation for the police department and the office number.

This was the fastest method they’d found through experimentation to pinpoint the location.

"It doesn’t have to be pretty. Just trace the door with the thread," Vivian explained.

She was just supposed to use the simplest stitch to cover the chalk marks.

"Oh, I can do that!" Hearing Vivian put it that way, Zoe’s confidence returned in an instant.

’I can’t say about anything else, but I definitely know how to sew clothes!’

It wasn’t difficult. A little over ten minutes later, Zoe had successfully covered the chalk lines.

Now, it was time to see if it had worked!

Not only were Zoe Sawyer and Vivian Dunn nervous, but so were Evan Keller and the others back in the office.

All eyes were fixed on the door.

When a tissue suddenly materialized out of thin air and waved at them, the whole group erupted in cheers.

"It worked!"

This way, they could pass information in the most covert way possible! They wouldn’t have to worry about being discovered!

Zoe watched her own hand reach through, and excitedly played with the portal a few more times.

Afterward, they tested it a few more times. Once they confirmed that they could reliably pass items through, they confidently stitched up the other skirts.

Once everything was ready, Zoe followed Vivian Dunn’s instructions and went to the statue in the square, pondering how exactly she was supposed to "go crazy."

’Ah, I’ve got it!’

Zoe’s eyes suddenly lit up!

’As long as the target notices me, I don’t necessarily have to go crazy, right?’

’So it shouldn’t be a problem if I tarnish my friends’ reputations a little, right?’

’It’s all for the mission, anyway. They’ll understand!’

The more Zoe thought about it, the more feasible the plan seemed. After composing her thoughts, she took the sleeve she had preemptively dabbed with essential balm and rubbed it hard against her eyelids. The scent of the balm instantly irritated her eyes, making them turn red as tears began to stream down her face.

Immediately after, Zoe let out a "WAAAH!" and burst into tears. Her sobs were loud and full of grievance, the kind that would make any passerby’s heart break.

The speed at which she started crying stunned Barry Quinn and Monkey, who were watching from a short distance away.

’That fast? Isn’t there supposed to be some kind of warm-up?’

Daytime. A roadside. A crying girl.

The combination of these three elements immediately drew the attention of nearby gossip-lovers, and a small crowd slowly started to gather.

A woman in her forties plopped down next to Zoe, patting her on the shoulder. Half-comforting, half-probing, she asked, "What’s wrong, young lady? Why are you sitting here crying all by yourself? Don’t tell me you lost your job?"

Zoe covered her eyes with her sleeve and shook her head frantically. "No, ma’am. My boyfriend dumped me. He’s a total bastard! He even hooked up with my friend!"

"The two of them even laughed at me for being stupid, saying they were just using me as an ATM!"

Ooh!

The instant Zoe finished speaking, everyone in the vicinity zeroed in on her.

Zoe clearly felt a furtive gaze sizing her up. Unlike the others, this person’s stare made her feel like she had needles on her back.

She subconsciously wanted to shudder but had to force herself to stay still, afraid the person would notice something was off.

"Whoa, you should tell me... ahem, don’t be sad. It’s good that you found out what a scumbag he is early on. Can you tell me how you found out? Maybe we can help you figure out a way to get some justice?" The woman stopped herself after just a few words, realizing it was a bit rude to ask right away.

’It’s better to lead into it a bit.’

As the woman spoke, the crowd gathering around them grew even larger.

Everyone was pretending to mind their own business, but their ears were pricked up high.

Some were even tapping away furiously on their phones, their eyes gleaming with excitement, clearly sharing the gossip with their friends.

Zoe paused in the middle of wiping her tears, then grabbed the woman’s hand, her voice mournful. "Ma’am, can you really help me? I loved him so much. My parents didn’t approve of us being together, so I even ran away from home for him. I spent every penny I had on him... How could he do this to me?"

At this point, Zoe’s tears welled up in her eyes, threatening to fall but never quite spilling over, making her look all the more pitiful and endearing.

Whoa!

’She’s a top-tier hopeless romantic!’

The woman’s eyes grew even more excited.

"You just tell me, sweetie. I promise I’ll help you figure something out!"
