My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 117: The Adultery Bust in Progress
Chapter 117: Chapter 117: The Adultery Bust in Progress
"Let’s go. We’re off today anyway, so it’s a good chance to go out and relax," Sean Hughes said, his interest in the matter piqued.
The Julia Payne case had been too disgusting. He needed some gossip to recharge.
If Zoe Sawyer hadn’t mentioned catching a cheater, he probably would have asked someone to go out anyway.
"But isn’t that illegal?" Zoe Sawyer’s expression was conflicted. If this were before, she would have gone without a second thought.
Now that she wore the uniform, she couldn’t just knowingly break the law, could she?
This was the main reason for Zoe Sawyer’s hesitation.
"What are you thinking about? It’s better if we go. That way, if your classmate gets too worked up and does something rash, we can stop her in time," Sean Hughes said, tapping Zoe Sawyer on the head.
In the process of catching a cheater, many women lose control of their emotions and end up assaulting the other party or taking photos they shouldn’t.
If the other party decided to press charges, the one who caught them in the act could end up being fined or detained.
If they went along and something like that did happen, they’d be right there to stop it.
"It’s fine to go out. You need to maintain your friendships with your classmates, after all." Heath Hale clapped them both on the shoulders, his tone gentle. Then, his manner suddenly shifted. "And who knows? Maybe with Zoe Sawyer’s ability, we’ll end up cracking another case."
Zoe Sawyer’s ability was important, but they couldn’t just keep her cooped up in the station all day.
This was a perfect opportunity for her to get out and clear her head.
Besides Barry Quinn and Monkey, who had to stay with Zoe Sawyer, the three of them would also be there. They could definitely keep her safe.
Not to mention, Barry Quinn and Monkey had special permission to carry weapons, just in case.
"Another one? No way! Please, just let me rest today," Sean Hughes wailed, slumping onto the table.
And so, it was decided. Zoe Sawyer didn’t refuse Heath Hale’s kind offer. After setting a meeting place with her classmate, she headed out with the group.
Of course, all six of them changed into civilian clothes and hurried to the designated meeting spot.
Evie Jacobs sat in a coffee shop, a forlorn look on her face as she stared out the window.
She listlessly poked at a slice of cake. Two men and a woman sat beside her. The four of them bore a slight resemblance to each other, so they were probably family.
"Zoe Sawyer! Over here, over here!"
Evie Jacobs, who had been looking rather sad, spotted a familiar figure at the coffee shop entrance and stood up, waving.
"Evie, what’s going on?" Zoe Sawyer asked as soon as she sat down, skipping the pleasantries.
Evie Jacobs and her husband were college sweethearts. They had dated all through university until they got married and were among the first in their class to tie the knot.
’I even attended their wedding. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary back then!’
’So why, after all this time, is she suddenly telling me he’s cheating?’
At the mention of this, Evie Jacobs’s eyes instantly turned red. "I’m pregnant. Because it was a high-risk pregnancy, my mom had me move back home to rest. At first, Quentin Miller would come see me right after work, and he’d spend the weekends with me. But then he started coming over less and less. When I asked him about it, he’d just say he had to work overtime to earn money for the baby.
I felt like something was wrong, so I even made a few surprise visits, but he really was working overtime. Then last month, I went home to pick something up and found several lipstick stains on the clothes he was too busy to wash. On the chest, the collar, and even on the inside of his shirt!
So I started paying close attention and gathered a lot of evidence. Now I’m ready to catch him in the act and then file for divorce! I’m going to make sure he leaves with nothing!"
’Stains elsewhere could be explained away, but on the inside of his shirt... that was undeniable proof.’
After hearing the whole story, Zoe Sawyer breathed a sigh of relief. She realized her classmate just wanted her there as a witness, which would make it easier to deal with any unfavorable rumors about her later on.
"That shouldn’t be a problem. Do you know where they are?" Zoe Sawyer asked.
"I do! I got a picture of their hotel booking! The bastards are trying to use this business trip to Varden to fool around! When the time comes, I’m going to go over and catch them red-handed!" Evie Jacobs said through gritted teeth.
Thank goodness she’d been paying attention after sensing something was wrong and managed to photograph everything before Quentin Miller could delete the messages.
After explaining the situation to Zoe Sawyer, Evie Jacobs also introduced her family.
Her two older brothers and her younger sister were all there to back her up.
"They’re all my coworkers. We just closed a big deal, so the company gave us a day off. When they heard I was coming to help catch a cheater, they tagged along," Zoe Sawyer said, giving Evan Keller and the others a cover story as she introduced them to Evie Jacobs.
First Brother Jacobs looked at Evan Keller and the others, frowning slightly.
’Their whole demeanor doesn’t seem like that of ordinary office workers,’ he thought. ’Oh well, they’re here to help my sister, so there’s no need to overthink it.’
When it was almost time, the large group made their way toward the hotel room.
Since they already knew the room number, they didn’t need to ask the front desk and went straight to the elevator.
Watching the group go in, the front desk clerk looked conflicted. She started to speak but was stopped by her coworker. "Don’t get involved! It’s obviously some guy who cheated and got caught.
They didn’t ask us anything, so we’ll just pretend we didn’t see a thing. If you say something and real trouble starts, you’ll be the first one they blame."
In the elevator, the group was too large, so they had to go up in two batches.
Standing inside, Zoe Sawyer had a worried look on her face. "Is this really okay? Are you guys going to get in trouble for this?"
"Don’t worry. Your friend didn’t get the room number by threatening the front desk. She found it on her husband’s phone, which is a legitimate method.
We’re coming along to act as witnesses. And if emotions do run high, we can keep things under control and prevent anything worse from happening." Sean Hughes patted Zoe Sawyer’s shoulder, reassuring her.
Evie Jacobs clearly knew what she could and could not do; she wasn’t one to knowingly break the law.
The reason she brought so many people, and specifically invited Zoe Sawyer, was not only to prevent her husband from getting violent, but also because testimony from family members isn’t considered very credible.
But testimony from a college classmate like Zoe Sawyer would be much more believable.
From start to finish, Evie Jacobs’s goal was to socially ruin her husband, get some leverage, and secure the best possible outcome for herself.
Evie Jacobs would only be happier to have five strangers join them, which was why Sean Hughes wasn’t worried at all.
After hearing this analysis, Zoe Sawyer finally relaxed. She had been overthinking things because she was worried.
Soon, the groups converged and arrived at the door of the room Quentin Miller had booked.
Hearing the pleas for mercy and the occasional CRACK of a whip from inside, Zoe Sawyer’s expression turned a bit strange.
’Quentin Miller seemed so straight-laced back in school. Is he really into such kinky stuff behind closed doors?’
’Will we give them a heart attack if we go in now?’
’But wait, why does it sound like there’s a third person’s voice?’
Evie Jacobs’s expression didn’t change. She twisted the doorknob. Good, it was unlocked.
She flung the door open and roared, "You bastard, Quentin Miller! How dare you cheat on me—"
But when she saw the scene before her, Evie Jacobs, who thought she was prepared, suddenly fell silent...
