My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 106: What Do You Want to Ask?
Chapter 106: Chapter 106: What Do You Want to Ask?
Heath Hale shone his flashlight into the pit before him. Once he saw what was inside, even Heath, who was used to all sorts of gruesome crime scenes and dead bodies, couldn’t help but feel a wave of nausea.
Evan Keller and the others gathered around. Inside the pit, neatly placed, was a woman’s severed head. Her eyes were wide open in a look of disbelief. Her hair was tidy, styled into two braids.
But from the crookedness of the braids, it was clear the homeless man must have been the one to style her hair.
At the bottom of the pit was also a set of clothes. Judging by the color, they probably belonged to the girl.
Although the skin on the head had already started to turn pale, Heath Hale recognized her at a glance. ’Isn’t this the owner of the ID photo from the wallet?!’
The thought that the homeless man would regularly take the head out of the pit to comb its hair and braid it sent a chill down Heath’s spine.
No wonder the man had been so certain at first that they would never find her. The victim was already dead, and their hiding spot was well-concealed. If it hadn’t been for Zoe Sawyer’s ability, it would have been very difficult to find this place so quickly.
"Something’s off over here, too. The soil is too fresh, like it’s just been turned over," Sean Hughes said, shining a high-powered flashlight into another corner.
The dirt in this corner was frequently disturbed, and its color was identical to the blood-soaked soil outside.
Sean Hughes reasonably suspected that something else was buried here.
"I’ll do it."
Officer Stone came over with a small shovel, taking over for Sean. He found the right spot and started digging.
He had barely dug twice when a white object was turned up.
It was a piece of bone, bearing black scorch marks and shreds of bright red flesh still clinging to it.
"Judging by the length, this is clearly a human leg bone," Sean Hughes said, carefully picking up the bone with gloved hands.
Officer Stone didn’t dare use the shovel anymore, afraid of damaging whatever else was underneath. He crouched down and began to dig with his hands.
Fortunately, the soil here had been dug up often and was quite loose, so Officer Stone easily unearthed the rest of what was buried.
"There’s too much. Let’s take everything back first and have a professional medical examiner look at it," Sean Hughes said, bagging the leg bone and standing up to survey the area.
The cellar was too small to conduct a proper search.
They would move everything out first, then send people down later to investigate more thoroughly.
No one else objected. They began moving the evidence out in batches.
The first batch heading back to the police station included the severed head and the man they had found tied up.
He woke up much earlier than anyone had anticipated.
Seeing that he was in a car, an expression of pure terror took over his face. He began to struggle wildly, slamming his head against the window and letting out terrified screams.
His hands and feet were bound, so he used his head and mouth, frantically ramming the car door and window. He refused to stop, even as his head became swollen and bloody.
Sitting next to him, Sean Hughes watched, at a complete loss. ’What am I supposed to do?!’
"Use the tranquilizer gun. Quiet him down. If this keeps up, something bad is going to happen," said Heath Hale, who was driving. He made a snap decision and handed his tranquilizer gun to Sean.
A frantic passenger in the back could not only injure himself but also distract the driver, which could easily lead to an accident.
It was also a good chance to see how long it took for this man to regain consciousness after being tranquilized.
Sean Hughes didn’t hesitate. After he shot the man with the tranquilizer, the car finally fell silent.
Heath Hale silently sped up, heading back to the station as fast as possible.
"You’re finally back! The homeless man we arrested earlier suddenly went crazy. He was smashing his head against the wall."
A young police officer hurried over to greet Zoe Sawyer and the others as they arrived. "If one of our colleagues hadn’t noticed in time and restrained him, he’d probably be in the hospital by now."
Shortly after they stopped him, the homeless man suddenly passed out.
Not daring to make a decision on their own, but also afraid he would try to escape, they tied him to a chair with a rope. Then they called a doctor from a nearby clinic to check on him.
The young officer only breathed a sigh of relief after the doctor confirmed the man had simply fainted and had no other issues.
Zoe Sawyer stopped and asked, "How is he now?"
The young officer scratched his head, looking troubled. "After he passed out, we were afraid he’d go crazy again when he woke up, so we left him tied to the chair. He should be coming to around now, I think."
At this point, the young officer continued, "We also have news on the person you asked us to look for. The file’s all compiled. Do you want it now?
"The surveillance footage is still being reviewed, but we should have results soon."
As he spoke, he handed a file from a nearby table to Zoe Sawyer and the others.
"Thanks for your trouble," Heath Hale said, taking the file and quickly flipping through it.
The moment he saw the photo inside, Heath confirmed it: the severed head belonged to the person in this file.
"Could you please take the homeless man to an interrogation room? And add an extra chair. We’ve got another one here." Evan Keller and Sean Hughes got out of the car, carrying the man they had just captured in the cellar.
After seeing the man’s face and hands, which were strikingly similar to the homeless man’s, the young officer didn’t hesitate. He turned and hurried off to arrange for the chair.
"Let’s head over, too. With all this, we should have almost everything we need," Heath Hale said, holding up the file in his hand.
When the homeless man regained consciousness and saw who was sitting next to him, his expression became extremely agitated.
"Let him go! I know you’re watching! Let him go!"
The homeless man struggled violently, but there were only the two of them in the interrogation room. No matter how much noise he made, no one answered him.
Instead, his commotion woke up the man beside him.
Upon seeing the homeless man, his reaction was identically frantic.
His voice, at first just meaningless "AHH"s, turned into a series of mumbled, indistinct calls of "Bro..."
It was at this moment that Heath Hale and Evan Keller walked in, carrying several files.
"Let him go!"
The homeless man’s gaze toward the two officers turned vicious, as if he wanted to lunge at them and tear them to pieces.
"Answer our questions honestly, and maybe we’ll untie your brother. You don’t want to see him tied up and suffering like this, do you?
"Your brother hasn’t eaten anything since you were caught. He must be hungry. Cooperate with us, answer our questions, and we’ll bring you both some food."
The moment he walked in, Heath Hale had changed his strategy.
He decided not to ask about the murdered girl, but to approach it from a different angle.
The homeless man cared deeply about his brother. Exploiting this weakness would certainly be more effective than any other method.
Sure enough, after hearing Heath’s words, the homeless man fell silent.
His expression became incredibly conflicted, shifting between a smile and a scowl.
In the end, the homeless man chose to compromise.
"What do you want to ask?"
