Chapter 100: Chapter 100: Ruby’s Aftermath

The Bureau Chief patted Officer Lee’s shoulder and took the USB drive from his hand.

He then looked at Zoe Sawyer and her team and said, "Good work. Go get some rest. We’ll let the higher-ups handle the rest."

Before leaving, the Bureau Chief beckoned to Heath Hale, signaling for him to come over.

"We already have someone watching Boss Thorne. Take this, go out the back door, and get it to Elder Crowe at the Provincial Bureau as fast as you can." The Bureau Chief placed the USB drive into Heath Hale’s hand, adding a reminder, "Remember, take credit where credit is due. Even though they know you did this, you need to bring it up yourself."

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. In the same way, knowing how to take credit is very important.

"Yes, sir!"

Heath Hale saluted the Bureau Chief and left with his men.

’Getting this drive delivered is what matters now.’

Meanwhile, at the sanatorium, a few men rushed over, only to find the area surrounded by police, ambulances, numerous reporters, and a crowd of onlookers.

"What’s going on here?" one of the men asked a bystander, feigning ignorance to suppress the bad feeling growing inside him.

The crowd chattered away, telling the man everything they knew. After finishing, one couldn’t help but click their tongue. "I can’t believe those missing people were being held here.

I heard there’s an incinerator in the basement. They burned a lot of people."

The information the crowd had was fragmented, but it was enough to piece together the general situation.

After getting the information he wanted, the man stood to the side, glaring at the people coming and going. He clenched his fists so tightly that his nails drew blood in his palms.

’One step too late!’

’It happened again!’

"Go!" The man gritted his teeth, forcing out the single word. He took one last, deep look at the scene before him, then turned and left.

Once they reached an empty, secluded area, the man issued his command.

"Investigate! Find out everything about what happened here! I want to know exactly where we were exposed!"

The man stared menacingly at the few people in front of him. "If this isn’t resolved perfectly, we’ll be the ones getting resolved!"

"Understood!"

The others didn’t dare to delay. After acknowledging the order, they dispersed, each using their own resources and connections to investigate the matter.

Heath Hale delivered the USB drive to Elder Crowe as quickly as possible.

Elder Crowe quickly scanned its contents, then clapped his hands in delight. "Excellent! With this, I doubt she can keep her mouth shut any longer!"

"Elder Crowe, then we..." Before Heath Hale could finish, Elder Crowe clapped him on the shoulder and said with a smile, "I know what you’re going to say. Don’t worry, I’ll report your merits to the Bureau Chief and the others. For now, come with me to the interrogation room."

Since he’d said that, Heath Hale had no choice but to swallow the rest of his words and follow behind Elder Crowe.

He hadn’t seen her in a while. Standing outside and looking in at Ruby, who had already been brought to the interrogation room, Heath Hale raised his eyebrows in surprise.

When they had first caught her, she didn’t look so broken-down and utterly dispirited.

"We’ve been holding her and that Jim Lynch separately this whole time. She hasn’t had contact with anyone except for a few specific personnel," Elder Crowe explained.

Whenever she was outside the interrogation room or her cell, she was made to wear a blindfold and a black hood.

Except for in the interrogation room, no one spoke to her, and no one paid her any mind.

The soundproof cell, the silent corridors she was led through, and the stern interrogation room.

All of this had placed immense psychological pressure on Ruby.

The fact that she had held out this long without saying a word meant she was just about at her limit.

They wouldn’t resort to violent interrogations, of course, but applying psychological pressure was fair game.

Now, this new evidence Heath Hale had brought was the final straw that would break her.

"Let’s go. Time to pay her a visit." Elder Crowe took the lead and walked in.

Ruby heard the noise and saw Heath Hale, the man who had captured her. She just stared at him.

"Take a look at this. How long are you planning to stay silent?" Elder Crowe tossed a copy of the documents onto the table in front of Ruby, his tone cold.

Looking down, Ruby’s pupils contracted. ’Isn’t this the transaction list between me and that overseas sanatorium?’

’Why is it here?!’

Then, Ruby thought of Zoe Sawyer, and a flash of understanding crossed her eyes. "It was that Zoe Sawyer who led you to it, wasn’t it? What a pity. You caught me too soon."

Perhaps deciding to throw caution to the wind, Ruby pushed the documents aside and leaned back in her chair, her expression and tone filled with regret. "If I had known, I would have told him this secret. Then you all would have your hands full, and I might have had a chance to escape."

Hearing this, Heath Hale’s mind raced.

’Does what Ruby just said mean her associates still don’t know about Zoe Sawyer’s abilities?’

"You didn’t tell them?" Heath Hale asked aloud.

Ruby shot Heath Hale a resentful look. "Are you happy? Even though I didn’t say anything, they’re not fools.

Your operation wasn’t exactly low-profile. All they have to do is investigate a little, and they’ll realize something is off. When that time comes, I won’t be the only one targeting her."

After saying this, Ruby returned to her previous state of unresponsive silence. When she got annoyed by the questioning, she would snap back, "You found everything, didn’t you? So why are you still asking me?"

Realizing they wouldn’t get anything more out of her today, Elder Crowe could only lead Heath Hale out of the room.

"Sawyer’s situation is different now. She has enemies out there watching her like hawks. Even if she doesn’t want to trouble the organization, we can’t just stand by and do nothing.

How about this: I’ll talk to your Bureau Chief. You take some men to pick up her family and move them to a safe location. Remember to explain the situation clearly to them." Elder Crowe stroked his chin, having quickly made a decision.

"Got it!" Heath Hale didn’t object. Eliminating potential threats to Zoe Sawyer was part of his job, after all.

After some deliberation, Heath Hale and the Bureau Chief decided to place the family in a vacant house not far from the police station. It had a small yard where Zoe Sawyer’s parents could do some gardening to pass the time.

Moreover, the neighbors were all families of police officers, and there was a small market nearby. It was very safe.

Heath Hale had originally planned to inform Zoe Sawyer, but her parents refused. They promised they wouldn’t wander off and said that if Zoe knew, she might keep running back to check on them, which would interfere with her work.

It was three days later when Heath Hale returned to the police station.

After confirming it was safe, Evan Keller had taken his younger brother back to the hospital for treatment and also arranged for him to be admitted to a sanatorium.

Once his brother had mostly recovered in the hospital, he would be transferred there to recuperate.

This time, however, their parents would be involved every step of the way to prevent what happened before from happening again.

"Hey, Heath Hale, you’re back! Quick, come look at this live stream. Something’s not right!"
