Chapter 168: Chapter 168: Live-Streamed Breakthrough

The main observation hall had gone quiet in a way that no amount of academy protocol could manufacture.

Hundreds of parents, handlers, minor guild officers, and invited spectators sat in ranked tiers above the primary projection wall.

The usual low murmur of commentary, side bets, and political assessment had thinned to almost nothing.

Even the staff along the upper galleries had stopped pretending to watch the other active grids.

On the central feed, a single hard-track unit kept refusing to stay down.

A parent two rows below the guildmaster section finally spoke, voice carrying farther than intended in the hush.

"Isn’t this just a test?"

Laila Thornsworn didn’t look away from the projection.

Her posture remained exactly as it had been since the Inverse phase began: calm, upright, hands folded loosely at the small of her back.

"It is," she said.

"That is why the board is still counting."

Jenna Everheart stood at the forward rail of the Sector 7 observation box with her arms crossed hard enough that the fabric of her coat pulled at the seams.

Beside her, Cecilia Lawless watched the same feed with the flat, evaluating stillness she brought to every cross-guild review.

Neither woman had spoken in several minutes.

Neither needed to.

The images on the wall were doing the talking for them.

No one in the hall was watching the remaining nineteen active brackets with any real attention.

The other units still traded points, still executed peels and rescues and clean severances under the open-tether rules.

None of it held the eye the way the violet-haired support on the primary feed did.

Outnumbered, separated from both anchors, vision cut, and still climbing a ruined facade with one of Giselle’s own supports dragging behind him like a living weight.

Laila’s gaze shifted, just slightly, toward Jenna.

"Did you train him?"

"Not personally, no."

Cecilia made a derisive sound.

"If not you, then who? He only uses those chains, yet in that short window he copied another participant’s reach, dragged three bodies through a five-man peel, changed momentum mid-exchange, and started wrapping the links around his own fists like gauntlets. Does that function have a name, or are we simply inventing new categories mid-exam?"

Jenna allowed herself a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

"Why don’t you ask your daughter? She trained with him, didn’t she?"

Cecilia didn’t answer.

On the feed, the white-haired support, Lain, finally tore free of one binding only to be caught again lower down.

The kinetic residual Revien had taken earlier still sat visible in the way he moved: faster recovery, uglier angles, a refusal to stay at the range Lain preferred.

When the two of them briefly closed on an open rooftop, the projection caught the exact moment a secondary channel re-formed.

Rei Lawless appeared in frame bloodied and smiling.

The next exchange should have left both of them winded.

Instead, the support’s posture reset as if someone had simply erased the accumulating fatigue.

A handler somewhere in the mid-tiers spoke too loudly.

"Did his speed just increase?"

"After fighting five of them?" another voice answered, incredulous.

Jenna didn’t reply.

Part of her was already running the same calculations the board would later formalise: output curves, retention, the dangerous speed at which the boy adapted under isolation stress.

Another, quieter part was simply afraid.

Afraid he would overdo it.

Afraid the cover they had built: Acolyte, dual registration, controlled disclosure, would crack open in front of every sector with a feed and an opinion.

Afraid the thing she had bought in a holding facility and slowly taught to stay human would decide the exam was the moment to stop pretending.

Then Rei turned his face and kissed him.

The sound in the hall changed quality.

A different kind of silence, followed by the low, inevitable wave of commentary that always accompanied visible intimacy between a scarce support and a ranked Vanguard.

"Isn’t that Lawless?"

"Guess something’s going on between those two."

"Look at him pulling her close."

Cecilia’s jaw tightened until a muscle jumped beneath the skin.

Colour rose along her cheekbones, not embarrassment, anger.

She had arranged supports for Rei for years.

Every one of them had left the arrangement bloodied, drained, or reassigned.

None of them had been kissed on an open rooftop in front of the entire intake cohort like the contact was both tactic and claim.

Whatever this boy carried, it had reached a place in her daughter that blood experiments and rank pressure had never touched.

Laila exhaled through her nose, the closest thing to a scoff she permitted herself in public.

Jenna’s attention never left the feed.

She saw the exact moment Giselle’s telekinetic hold took Gianna.

She saw the throw.

The shape of her daughter arcing toward the red portal with the casual finality of a demonstration.

For one frozen second, the observation box, the hall, the entire ranked audience ceased to exist.

There was only the trajectory and the knowledge that if the rupture took her, the gridlock would not be a scoring mechanic.

It would be an ending.

Then the violet-haired support moved like the distance itself had become an insult.

He climbed.

He dragged.

Revein launched Lain toward the same portal with a violence that made several parents flinch.

Giselle was forced to choose.

The hold transferred.

Gianna fell free long enough for chains, too many chains, moving with a coordination that no longer looked entirely voluntary, to find her in open air.

Jenna’s hands had locked on the rail hard enough to hurt.

Gianna hit a lower roof in a controlled roll.

Blood still tracked from her nose.

She was alive and already pushing herself upright.

A different parent, somewhere near the Sector 4 section, spoke the thought the entire hall was holding.

"What is this?"

"How is he so strong?"

Laila finally turned her head toward the secondary board that floated to the right of the main projection.

The provisional rankings updated in clean, pitiless columns.

[Team 001: Provisional Score: 42]

[Team 222: Provisional Score: 29]

[Team 014: Provisional Score: 27]

[Team 055: Provisional Score: 24]

[Team 112: Provisional Score: 19]

[Team 087: Provisional Score: 18]

[Team 156: Provisional Score: 15]

[Team 034: Provisional Score: 14]

[Team 201: Provisional Score: 11]

[Team 099: Provisional Score: 9]

[Team 133: Provisional Score: 7]

[Team 042: Provisional Score: 4]

Team 222, Everheart, Lawless, and the support whose name still sat under partial classification, had climbed into second on the strength of a single chaotic sequence that should have ended in capture or ejection.

Cecilia’s voice was very quiet.

"Your investment is becoming expensive, Jenna."

Then it happened.

Jenna’s eyes widened.

What the rest of them saw was that he was going to kiss her mid-fight.

"Is he mad?"

"Wishing for death, isn’t he?"

Jenna knew what it was.

Even Cecilia was shocked.

Laila fully turned towards Jenna.

"Is he—?"
