Chapter 143: Chapter 143: The Empress’s Daughter

The next three days were practice and restraint.

No ghost hours or romantic crashes into deferred fatigue.

Jenna’s schedule tightened around one principle: hold power level without overworking the triad into uselessness before the grid opened.

Radius integrity. Denial under pursuit. Anti-hook footwork until the movement lived in the body instead of the briefing slate.

Zenith stayed sealed except for one timed micro-window, so the system could log recovery curves.

Rei became more focused.

That should have been good.

It also made her hard to read.

Some blocks she laughed and teased like the old blade-edge version of herself, chew toy, don’t drop your left, Everheart’s face when you miss a call.

Other blocks, she finished a cycle, sat against the mirrored wall, and stared through the glass like she was watching a different room.

Calculating something that hasn’t happened yet.

Somewhere far behind her eyes, a ghost of touch kept replaying.

[Secondary candidate: Rei Lawless]

[Combat readiness: Elevated]

[Emotional volatility: Irregular — Suppressed spikes]

[Favorability: 46 / 100]

[Advisory: Focus quality high. Recovery discipline improved; internal conflict not resolved]

[Primary anchor: Gianna Everheart]

[Favorability: 68 / 100]

[Channel Stability: strong]

[Minor fluctuation under secondary observation — non-critical]

I caught myself watching Rei too long on the second afternoon.

Gianna noticed, of course she did, and spoke without looking away from the marker line she was setting.

"Leave her be."

"She’s—"

"I know."

Gianna’s voice was quiet.

Through the anchor, I felt a slight fluctuation, a tightening quickly controlled.

"Whatever house poison she’s carrying, she showed up on time. She’s not bleeding herself out after hours. Pushing her to confess in the middle of a denial drill helps your anxiety, not our score."

"I’m not anxious."

"You’re hovering."

Fair.

I didn’t care about first and second ranking the way graphs and mothers cared.

Near my core, hierarchy language felt crude.

Gianna was a very important person, primarily not as a trophy, as the channel I stabilized toward without thinking.

Rei was equally important in a different key: she had let me take energy when it mattered, trained without drowning me in conditions, calculated recklessness into something that still showed up for we three.

That mattered more than whose percentage sat higher on Jenna’s pane.

Still, the staring days worried me.

On the third evening, after Rei left with a salute sharp enough to cut, Gianna packed slower than usual.

"You’re doing it again," she said.

"What?"

"Measuring her like a threat and a teammate in the same breath."

She sealed her bag.

"She’s both until she proves otherwise. So are half the people in the Scramble. Save the interrogation for after we don’t get hooked."

"Copy."

"And Revien."

"Yeah?"

"If her focus turns into something aimed at me on the field, you drop the secondary feed, and you say it out loud."

No drama. Procedure.

"I won’t be polite about a blade in the back because the situation was ugly."

"You think Rei will hurt you?"

"I hope I am wrong."

"I won’t ask you to be polite."

She nodded once and left me with the system’s quiet inventory and the knowledge that tomorrow was the last full day before the test.

Last day.

Jenna didn’t waste it on encouragement posters.

We stood in the private briefing room- Gianna, Rei, me- while Mira dimmed the lights and Jenna opened a board packet that finally felt heavier than training theory.

"Final confirmation," Jenna said.

"Sealed brief is live for accepted dual units. Practical gates open tomorrow under Inverse Intake rules. You already know the public shape: Fulcrum and Fury. Open tether in the last phase. Extraction thresholds. Hooks. Shared grid."

Rei’s arms folded.

The bruise on her jaw had faded to something makeup could argue with.

Her eyes had not softened.

"Any changes from the leak geometry?"

"Two."

Jenna flicked the pane.

"One: Scramble cell size for your bracket is confirmed at four teams, including yours. Two: observation density is higher than standard because Empress-line presence is not ceremonial only. There will be scored viewing blocks. That means dirty within the rules still has an audience."

Gianna’s voice was flat.

"Sponsorship optics."

"Yes. Pass ugly if you must. Don’t pass looking like a house war on a public grid."

Jenna’s gaze touched Rei for half a second, then moved on.

"Sever rival supports. Do not collect them. Recover peels. Do not gift anchor-failure flags by shutting the channel out of panic."

"Zenith?" I asked.

"If you use it, you use it in the Scramble phase when hooks are live, not in the opening clear to feel powerful."

Jenna expanded a timing model.

"Thirty-minute phase. Your multi-body drain rate makes a full-hour fantasy stupid. Treat it as a surgical window."

[Host note: Political pressure on secondary candidate remains elevated]

Rei exhaled through her nose.

"Targets?"

"Anyone who’s not you three."

"Everyone’s out for head, huh?"

"Board will not hand you a kindness list."

Jenna switched images to a set of anonymized prior-year heat maps, then to current gossip columns Mira had scrubbed into usefulness.

"Assume at least one team in your cell has hunted supports in circuit practice. Assume someone has been paid to test whether your gold node is as abnormal as the whispers."

Gianna glanced at me.

"Boring in public. Violent on the grid."

"Precisely."

Jenna paused, then opened a personnel file with a security frame that made the air feel narrower.

A photograph resolved in the center of the table light.

White hair. Red eyes.

A dark suit cut like authority had been tailored to a young body and found it already fit.

The woman’s expression was not student-nervous.

It was appraisal.

"This is the confirmed Empress-line participant attached to your intake cycle’s highest observation tier," Jenna said.

"Giselle Kestava. Daughter of Sector 5’s Empress."

Rei’s eyebrows lifted a millimeter.

Gianna went very still.

"She’s not guaranteed to share your Scramble cell," Jenna continued.

"She is guaranteed to affect how proctors mark anomalies and how rival houses perform for an audience. Do not approach. Do not challenge for reputation. If your grid happens to overlap her unit’s interest, you play the rules, not your pride."

I stared at the photo.

"Combat profile?"

Jenna’s mouth hardened.

"She was trained under Draven."

The name landed like a dropped plate.
