Chapter 139: Chapter 139: Sex Is Not An Erasure

Shock flashed across her face that I had taken it.

Then anger replaced shock, and she hit me again.

"You...!"

And again.

Shorter punches.

Weaker.

Rhythm falling apart while she stayed on her feet by stubbornness alone.

My back found the mat.

Rei followed me down without elegance, straddled my waist, and kept striking my chest as if the hits were the only language left that didn’t require confessing anything.

Each impact softer.

Each breath uglier.

Her braid had come half undone.

The chain still circled her wrist like a reminder she hadn’t escaped the rule.

"You’re really..." Her voice frayed.

"Really..."

She was on the edge of crying and did not cry.

Jaw locked. Eyes wet and furious about it. Fists resting against my shirt instead of lifting for another blow.

I let the chain dissolve into nothing.

"You don’t have to tell me anything."

Her weight stayed on me, trembling with spent adrenaline.

I didn’t push her off. I didn’t pull her down into a different kind of contact either.

The hall was quiet except for her breathing and the low building hum.

"Like Gianna said," I continued, steady, "we are in this together. Trust us. We will get through it. Whether it’s your mom or her support."

Rei’s hands curled in the fabric over my sternum.

"You don’t know Cecilia."

"I know she pinched my face and measured Gianna in a corridor like inventory."

I held her gaze.

"I know she made Jenna’s eyes go white. That’s enough to take her seriously. It isn’t enough to watch you burn yourself out in an empty hall so you’ll be slower when hooks start flying."

"I’m not—"

"You are."

Soft. Firm.

"And if you show up to Inverse Intake already emptied, the first team that peels me doesn’t even have to be talented. They just have to be fresh."

Rei stared at me for a long second. The wetness in her eyes didn’t fall. Pride held it like a dam.

"She hates loose variables," Rei said finally, voice rough.

"I’m a variable the moment I stand next to something she didn’t approve in triplicate. Cillian stabilizes her house. I was supposed to be proof the bloodline doesn’t need charity from Everheart experiments."

"You’re not an experiment on my slate."

"I know what I am on paper."

Her mouth twisted.

"Secondary. Review clause. Useful teeth."

"You’re a player," I said, using Jenna’s word on purpose.

"Assets don’t win tests alone. Players who arrive exhausted lose the asset and then lose everything else."

Rei’s breath shuddered out. She sat back on my thighs, still straddling me, chained wrist free now, hands open on her own knees like she didn’t trust them.

"If she tries to remove Gianna from the arithmetic," Rei said, almost inaudible, "I won’t help her."

"I didn’t ask you to fight your mother for me."

"I’m not doing it for you."

A flash of the old sharpness.

"I’m doing it because Gia answered ’we three’ before you did. And because I don’t like people touching my things."

"I’m not a thing."

"You are to her," Rei said.

Then, quieter:

"You’re not to me. Not only."

"Okay. I understand."

Before I could help her up, Rei kissed me.

It was hard and hungry.

Not the training-penalty kiss and not the residual-heal contact.

This one had teeth under it, an attempt to rewrite the last ten minutes by force of mouth alone.

My eyes widened.

Her hands went to my shirt at once, fingers working the buttons with unsteady urgency.

I could feel what she was doing as clearly as any system pane: trying to claw back the version of herself that didn’t end up crying-adjacent on top of someone after bad footwork and a mother-shaped shadow.

Weakness, for Rei, was a room she refused to stay in.

Sex was a door out.

"I don’t mind being secondary, Revien."

Her voice came against my lips, rough.

"Let’s fuck."

She pushed the shirt open and kissed the skin she found, tongue drawing a line along my throat.

Heat followed contact. The class stirred, interested, available, not in charge.

I didn’t answer with my body the way the class preferred. I held her face in both hands and made her stop long enough to see me.

"Pull it together."

Being that close only gave her another angle.

She kissed me again, deeper, tongue pushing into my mouth like a challenge she could still win.

For a second I let the contact exist so she would know the refusal wasn’t disgust.

Then I controlled the distance again.

"Let’s do it," Rei said.

"You’re always on your terms, night rules, ceilings, Jenna’s protocols, Gia’s review clauses. Let me have this."

"And then what?"

Her movements slowed near my waistband, fingers hovering like the next choice would decide what kind of person she was allowed to be after showing a crack.

"Then..." A swallow.

"Then I’d have you before Gia. Then I won’t be second anymore. Then I won’t be someone you replace when you fill out those ten candidates you told me about."

I turned her face fully toward mine and held it there.

"Who said anything about replacing you?"

Silence.

"And this isn’t a race," I said.

"You’re not reaching for me because you simply want me. This is you trying to put the dominant version back on top so the vulnerable one doesn’t get to write the ending of the hour. I can kiss you back. We can have sex on this mat. I can handle Gia’s fallout if that’s the cost you want me to prepay."

I kept my voice even.

"But will you be happy with this after?"

Rei’s hands started trembling against my stomach.

The system edged in, clinical as ever.

[Intimate pathway available]

[Target: Rei Lawless]

[Favorability: 47 / 100]

[Arousal: 62 / 100]

[Emotional drivers detected: Status anxiety/vulnerability rebound / competitive attachment]

[Advisory: Proceeding consolidates short-term pair bonding; elevates primary-anchor conflict risk; does not resolve Cecilia-related instability]

[Host regulation: Stable]

I ignored the option light and stayed on her eyes.

"I don’t know your whole family, Rei. I don’t know every Lawless ledger or what Cillian means inside your house. But I know you. And you’re one of the bravest people I’ve met, though I haven’t met many."

She let out a broken chuckle.

The tears that pride had been holding finally edged closer without freely falling.

"That’s a low sample size."

"It’s still true."

Her forehead dropped against mine for a second, breath uneven.

"If we do it, I can stop thinking."

"If we do it like this, you’ll wake up tomorrow, and the thinking will be worse," I said.

"You’ll add ’I used him to outrun my mother’ to the pile. Or ’I made myself first for a night and remained second on paper.’ I won’t be your eraser."
