Chapter 125: Chapter 125: Cheating the 20-Second Abort Clock

Then she left.

I sat on the empty bench a minute longer, the ghost of her mouth on mine, the unfinished sacrifice locked behind her order where it belonged, the word love still hanging in the air in its revised shape, not ownership, not monogamy theater, a decision to keep her closest while the world demanded a network.

[Primary anchor integrity: Elevated]

[Emotional charge: unstable — Constructive]

[Host self-erasure language: Flagged — Target rejected]

[Verbal bond markers: increased]

"Yeah," I told the system.

"I heard her."

[Good.]

"And she heard me."

[Also good. Do not leverage this for dual-feed compliance tomorrow. She will notice.]

I almost smiled.

"I’m learning."

[Slowly.]

"Give me a roulette for confessing."

[...]

[Request denied.]

[Emotional disclosure is not a quest completion trigger at this tier.]

[Consolation: Verbal bond markers already increased primary stability. Further gambling is unnecessary.]

"Cheap."

[Correct.]

I left the hall, ate, and did not message Rei.

Day three didn’t care about confessions.

Overnight pair drills and the morning’s short calibration had done what speeches could not.

I could hold both of them on the line now, not in a clean permanent dual motor link, but in the staggered form Jenna had beaten into the sequence: primary rhythm first, secondary at track, pulse motor when the objective demanded it, drop and re-add before the node tore.

Favorability sat in the system like a quiet scoreboard when I finally checked it on the walk to the private hall.

Gianna Everheart (Primary Anchor)

Favorability: 64 / 100

Notes: Bond markers are currently up. Her residual trust remains strictly conditional.

Jenna Everheart (Handler / Allied)

Favorability: 48 / 100

Notes: Designated for regulation trust. She is not part of the active network combat slate.

Rei Lawless (Secondary Candidate)

Favorability: 41 / 100

Notes: Ranked based on honesty and stress respect. Her status remains volatile.

Not romance theater. Trajectory.

The mock had a different shape than the yellow-dummy escort.

Jenna stood on the mat edge with Mira’s tablet live and the observation glass fully manned.

"Today’s fail condition is not package integrity," she said.

"It is civilian markers."

Three soft-light pillars bloomed along a broken path through shifting hard-light terrain, unstable platforms, intermittent blind corridors, pressure drones that prioritized the brightest heat signature in a clutch.

"You will move all three markers from gate to extraction without letting any of them drop below thirty percent integrity," Jenna continued.

"Drones will focus whoever is loudest in part and whoever is most isolated. Full dual requirement: if either support spends more than twenty consecutive seconds unlinked in a pressure zone, the run aborts. Staggered feed is allowed. Permanent dual motor is not required. Efficiency and marker survival decide filing eligibility. Personal history does not."

Rei rolled her neck.

"Unique. Annoying."

Gianna checked the first marker’s glow.

"Lane rules?"

"Same as yesterday," I said.

"I call crowding. You don’t police with kinetics. Rei, blood budget only when a marker is about to die. We open on primary rhythm."

"Mark when the field goes live," Jenna said.

The field went live.

"Mark."

[Mock evaluation: Active]

[Objective: 3 civilian markers → Extraction]

[Dual requirement: Enforced]

[Sequence: Host-controlled stagger]

Chain to Gianna first.

Forty seconds of clean pair movement through the opening corridor while Rei took the thin tracking thread and painted drone angles without steering my feet.

The first marker hitchhiked in Gianna’s kinetic cradle. I chained the second; Rei’s track kept the third from being sniped at the rear.

"Pulse motor—Rei, two seconds, left drone cluster only."

The secondary link thickened.

Rei cut a launcher line with a budgeted blood edge and released before Gianna’s distance reflex could spike.

Drop.

Track again.

"Good," I said.

"Again on my call only."

We hit the first unstable platform.

A drone volley forced a hard choice: close ranks and draw fire, or split and risk the isolation abort timer.

"Gia, cover cone. Rei, do not enter her lane. I’m the axle."

Fracture Step shaved me into the volley’s blind, after-image, taking a round.

Chains forked: one braced Gianna’s hip as a platform edge crumbled, one tugged Rei’s wrist back onto the scored path when her instincts lunged for residual at my open side.

Forced contact, half a second, both of them on the same motion.

"Markers," Gianna snapped.

"All three green," Rei answered, surprisingly professional.

"Rear marker dipping, twenty-eight, no, I got it."

A blood tether yanked the third pillar out of a drone’s focus at the cost of a line across Rei’s palm. She hissed and sealed it without theater.

Near-break came in the blind corridor.

Rei pushed in, full closure hunger, motor grab without my pulse call, when a drone flock boxed the second marker.

Gianna’s channel yanked distance so hard the node screamed.

"Reach, conflict—" I vocalized it raw.

"Secondary drop. Primary hold. Rei, outside now."

Plop.

The motor link to Rei died.

Tracking snapped back only when she cursed and took the outside angle.

Gianna’s kinetic field pinned two drones without shoving the woman this time.

"I had the shot," Rei snarled.

"You had a fracture," I said.

"Markers first. Ego never."

Silence for one stride. Then: "Copy."

Extraction mouth opened in hard light.

All three markers had to cross in the same window while drones dumped everything into the loudest signature, mine.

"Both," I said.

"Same second. Gia, wide deny. Rei, blood-cost save on marker three if it dips. I’m the chain axle, do not pull opposite directions."

They moved.

Gianna’s power swept a clean arc that stripped drone aim.

Rei spent a real spray, controlled, ugly, effective, and knitted a crimson brace under the third marker as its integrity flickered at thirty-one.

My chains locked all three pillars into a single dragged frame, and Fracture Stepped the whole clutch across the line as the isolation timer on Rei ticked nineteen... eighteen...

"Link," I snapped, and the secondary motor pulse seated just long enough to kill the abort condition as we crossed.

Buzzer.

All three markers above thirty.

No abort.

[Mock result: COMPLETE]

[Marker integrity: 44% / 51% / 33%]

[Efficiency: PASS]

[Emotional stability: YELLOW — Improved from Day 2]

[Dual stagger success: Logged]

[Filing eligibility: UNLOCKED pending signatures]
