Chapter 279: THE TWO SCYTHES

  • Next Chapter

[Silent Threshold — Combat Zone — 4:38 PM]

---

The angel hadn’t left.

Two hundred meters north, elevated position, wings at a horizontal angle. Watching.

**"It didn’t leave,"** said Kira.

Not as surprise. As confirmation of what she already knew.

**"No,"** said Grim.

Alex saw it from where he was — standing, both scythes still materialized, F1 crimson in his left hand and F4 violet in his right. The body that should have fallen with HP at zero and that was still standing because F7 hadn’t yet decided it was time to let go.

Two hundred meters.

The angel watching.

---

Alex felt the difference first.

It wasn’t like the previous Chapter’s frenzy — the three minutes of collapse where the four Fragments fought for space and the Harvester’s attire came apart and the violet scythe floated because his wrist couldn’t hold it. That had been four voices at the same time without direction.

This was different.

F1 in the left scythe. Still. Not pushing.

F4 in the right scythe. The channel compensating for the fracture — not healing it, compensating, giving his hand the correct angle to hold the weapon as if the bone weren’t broken.

F7 in the center of the three. Not above, not dictating. Just present. The previous cycle’s memory as an additional layer of information that arrived without being asked for.

And the three together — without conflict.

**"What changed?"** said Alex quietly.

**"Raven,"** said Grim.

---

Alex didn’t turn to look at her.

He knew where she was — on the ground, four meters to his right, with Jessica kneeling beside her. Her left hand on her abdomen. HP at zero. Conscious.

Raven with HP at zero and F3 active throughout the fight and her hand on her abdomen after the angel struck her left shoulder.

**"F7 has concrete reasons,"** said Grim. **"It had them before the fight. It has them now. When you saw the angel strike her — when the HP reached zero — the three Fragments stopped fighting each other."**

**"Why?"**

**"Because you stopped calculating,"** said Grim. **"And when a bearer stops calculating with four Fragments at one hundred percent, the only thing left is the most direct reason."**

Pause.

**"The most direct was Raven."**

---

The angel moved.

It didn’t descend. It didn’t close the distance. It repositioned — twenty meters west, same height, same observation posture. Changing the angle.

**"What’s it doing?"** asked Kira.

**"Reading,"** said Grim. **"What it sees now is different from what it saw fifteen minutes ago."**

What the angel saw fifteen minutes ago: the Fragment bearer in unstable frenzy, four voices without direction, the Harvester’s attire undone, the violet scythe floating, collapse in exactly three minutes.

What the angel saw now: the same bearer, HP at zero, standing, with two stable scythes and F7 active and the three Fragments in synchronization.

The difference was what the angel was calculating from two hundred meters.

---

F7 delivered information. As direct memory, as if Alex had lived cycle 42 and were remembering it now instead of receiving it new.

The original Harvester at the same point of the same fight.

Also HP at zero. Also standing. Also with the Fragments it had — four, same as Alex — in synchronization after the most direct reason came to the front.

And cycle 42’s angel doing the same thing this angel was doing now.

Repositioning.

Calculating.

**"Cycle 42’s angel left after calculating,"** said Alex.

**"Yes."**

**"How long did it take to calculate?"**

**"Four minutes."**

Alex looked toward where the angel was now — the repositioning to the west, the new angle, the wings in the same posture.

**"We’re at two,"** said Alex.

---

Kira moved to Alex’s left without saying anything.

Not to attack — to cover the flank in case the angel decided two minutes were enough. The katana in her right hand, her amber eyes on the angel, weight distributed to move in any direction.

Seraph was three meters from Emily. HP at zero, standing, F2 still active though barely. The posture that said that if the angel descended before the calculation finished, Seraph was going to interpose anyway.

Jessica was still with Raven. F6’s hands on Raven’s left shoulder — not healing, stabilizing. Limiting further damage.

The team without needing to coordinate.

Each one in the position they should be in.

---

F7 delivered more.

Cycle 42’s fight, the equivalent moment. The original Harvester with four stable Fragments and HP at zero and the angel calculating.

What the original Harvester had done in those four minutes.

It hadn’t attacked. It hadn’t moved. It hadn’t done anything the angel could read as threat or as preparation.

It had waited with the scythes active.

And at the moment the angel finished calculating — at the exact moment the angel made the decision to withdraw — the original Harvester had taken one step forward.

One single step.

Not to attack. So the angel would see that the bearer had known when the calculation would end.

So the angel would understand that the bearer had access to information the angel hadn’t anticipated it having.

---

**"What are you going to do?"** said Grim.

Not as a strategy question. As a real question — Grim recognizing that Alex had cycle 42’s memory and that the decision of what to do with it was Alex’s.

Alex looked at the two scythes.

F1 crimson in his left — the flame of the plane between life and death, the same one that had been in every version of the Harvester from the first cycle to this one.

F4 violet in his right — the channel compensating for the fracture, the space‑distortion Fragment holding the bone at the correct angle so his hand could hold the weapon.

F7 in the center.

Three Fragments. Stable. Without conflict.

**"What the original did,"** said Alex.

He waited.

---

Four exact minutes since the angel had repositioned.

The angel at the same point to the west, the wings without changing angle, the eyes — the ones Alex couldn’t see from two hundred meters but knew were there — completing the calculation.

Alex took one step forward.

One single step.

The two scythes in his hands. F7 active. HP at zero and the body ignoring the number.

Two hundred meters of distance and the angel saw it.

---

The angel went still.

Ten seconds.

Twenty.

And then it spoke — not toward Alex, toward no particular point, the voice coming from the Gods’ plane and that Grim translated without Alex having to ask.

**"’The seventh Fragment has memory of the previous cycle,’"** said Grim.

Pause.

**"’The cycle 42 bearer did the same. At the same moment.’"**

The angel without moving.

**"’It isn’t possible that it knows when the calculation ends unless it has direct access to the previous cycle’s record.’"**

Another pause.

**"’It has it.’"**

---

Silence in the forest.

The fallen trees. The impossible‑colored blood on the ground at the point where the angel had been before repositioning. The team in their positions — Kira on the flank, Seraph with Emily, Jessica with Raven.

The angel two hundred meters away looking at Alex with one step forward and two scythes and F7 active.

**"’The cycle 42 bearer used that time,’"** Grim translated. **"It says the original Harvester used the time the angel’s wait gave it."**

A pause.

**"’This bearer will use it too.’"**

Alex didn’t confirm or deny.

The angel spoke one more sentence.

**"’The Gods didn’t foresee that the seventh Fragment retained operational combat memory.’"**

And then the last sentence — short, with the weight of something the angel was recognizing for the first time in this cycle:

**"’This situation wasn’t in the Gods’ record.’"**

---

The angel rose.

Vertically, fast, the wings closing and opening into the real speed posture. North. The same direction as before.

In twelve seconds it was a point.

In twenty, nothing.

---

Alex lowered the scythes.

Not dissolved them — lowered them. F1 and F4 still materialized, still active, but without the combat posture.

HP: 0.

The body processing what F7 had sustained for — Alex searched the time — nineteen minutes total counting from the moment the collapse ended and the three Fragments synchronized.

Nineteen minutes with HP at zero.

**"You need to sit down,"** said Grim.

**"I know."**

**"Now."**

Alex sat. He didn’t choose to do it gradually — his knees gave way before the decision arrived complete and he ended up on the ground with his palms on the earth and the scythes still in his hands because F1 and F4 were still active.

The ground was cold.

Good.

---

**"Did it leave?"** said Raven from where she was.

**"Yes,"** said Alex.

**"Is it coming back?"**

Alex took a second.

**"Yes,"** he said.

Raven processed this.

**"When?"**

**"I don’t know."**

The silence between the two. Four meters of distance. Alex on the ground with the scythes and Raven on the ground with her left hand on her abdomen.

**"’This situation wasn’t in the Gods’ record,’"** Raven repeated. She had heard Grim’s translation.

**"No."**

**"Is that good?"**

Alex looked at the two scythes — the crimson, the violet, the light of each different but without fighting for space.

**"It means they don’t know what comes next,"** said Alex. **"Same as us."**

Raven looked at him.

**"That’s not what I asked."**

A pause.

**"Yes,"** said Alex. **"It’s good."**

---

The scythes dissolved.

Not because Alex decided it — F1 and F4 withdrawing at the same time as F7 finally released what it had sustained for nineteen minutes. The synchronization finished. The three Fragments returning to the waiting state.

HP: 0.

And the body without F7 holding it.

Alex lay back on the ground.

He didn’t choose that either.

**"Alex."** Kira in two steps, kneeling, her fingers searching for a pulse. **"Conscious?"**

**"Yes."**

**"Show me your eyes."**

Alex opened his eyes — the normal dark ones, not the Harvester’s crimson, not F4’s violet. The usual ones.

Kira checked them for three seconds.

**"Internal bleeding,"** she said. **"The angel’s shoulder strike at minute two. You need a real healer, not the field kit."**

**"Threshold Port,"** said Alex.

**"Two hours’ walk in your current state."**

**"Can someone carry me?"**

Kira looked at him.

**"Seraph could,"** she said. **"If Seraph had HP."**

**"Maya could,"** said Alex. **"If Maya were conscious."**

**"Viktor."**

Pause. Alex remembering. Viktor hadn’t been in the fight — he had stayed in Threshold Port with Max.

**"Viktor,"** Alex confirmed. **"We need communication."**

**"Jessica has the crystal."**

Alex turned his head toward where Jessica was with Raven. Jessica looked up when she heard her name.

**"Communication crystal?"** said Kira.

Jessica took the crystal from her jacket pocket without saying anything. She activated it. Threshold Port — Viktor’s frequency.

The crystal took eight seconds to connect.

---

**"Jessica?"** Viktor’s voice on the crystal. Background noise — Threshold Port, the port, market voices. **"What happened? We felt the impact from here."**

**"The angel withdrew,"** said Jessica. **"We need extraction. The whole team at the ruins zone — Alex, internal bleeding. Emily and Maya unconscious. Raven and Seraph at zero HP. Kira on her feet."**

Silence on the crystal for two seconds.

**"How many dead?"** said Viktor.

**"None."**

Another silence.

**"I’m coming in an hour,"** said Viktor. **"With Max and medical supplies. Stay where you are."**

The crystal cut off.

---

Jessica put it away.

She looked at Raven. Raven was looking north — the direction where the angel had disappeared, the sky with nothing in it now.

**"The angel’s sentence,"** said Raven. **"’This situation wasn’t in the Gods’ record.’"**

Jessica waited.

**"It means the Gods planned this fight with incomplete information,"** said Raven. Not a question. Observation.

**"Yes,"** said Jessica.

**"What information did they lack?"**

Jessica looked at her notebook — she took it from the inner pocket, opened it to the blank page following the fight notes. She took the pencil.

**"The seventh Fragment has operational combat memory of the previous cycle,"** said Jessica, writing as she spoke. **"The Gods knew F7 existed. They didn’t know it retained combat information applicable in real time."**

Pause. Writing.

**"And they didn’t foresee that the bearer would have enough concrete reasons to stabilize the frenzy."**

Raven looked at her.

**"Are you writing it as a limitation of the Gods or as an advantage of the team?"**

Jessica finished the line.

**"As both,"** she said. **"They’re the same thing."**

---

Four meters away, Alex looked at the sky.

The 5 PM sky over the Silent Threshold — the light lowering, the orange starting at the horizon, the clouds the fight had moved returning to normal positions.

HP: 0.

The ribs. The wrist. The internal bleeding Kira had identified. The body compiling the list of what it had ignored for nineteen minutes.

**"Grim,"** said Alex quietly.

**"What."**

**"The original Harvester. After the angel left in cycle 42."**

**"What do you want to know?"**

**"How was it?"**

Grim took a moment.

**"The record doesn’t include detailed physical state,"** said Grim. **"But F7 has memory of what came after the fight."**

**"And?"**

**"It rested three days."**

Alex looked at the sky.

**"Only three."**

**"Only three,"** said Grim. **"And then the Threshold began."**
