Chapter 275: ALEX AT THE LIMIT

  • Next Chapter

The altered‑reality barrier lasted forty‑three seconds.

Not because Alex closed it — because holding it with F7 while the other four Fragments responded to active combat was like trying to close a window with one hand while holding an increasing weight with the other. F7 needed focused attention. The other four needed focused attention. There was only one mind to distribute that attention.

At second forty‑three, F1 pushed to thirty‑two percent without Alex asking, and the barrier destabilized at its edge — the altered state of space giving way at the point where F1’s channel interrupted F7’s concentration.

The angel saw it.

And pushed.

---

The angel’s wounded arm — the right one, with Seraph’s third cut and the deep wound Grim had left from the plane between life and death — passed through the barrier’s destabilized edge.

Not without cost.

The altered edge at that point still held enough active F7 that passing through with the wounded arm produced damage — the repressor’s right arm wound opening further as it forced passage through a space where reality wasn’t fully in agreement that the arm should pass.

The impossible‑colored blood at the barrier’s edge.

The angel passed through anyway.

---

The angel’s right fist — from its wounded arm, the impossible‑colored blood falling as the movement compressed it — reached Alex’s torso.

Not the torso protected by any armor, not the torso with Emily’s Purifying Light active as cushioning because Emily was on the ground across the clearing.

Alex’s torso.

Directly.

[Alex HP: 298,400 → 189,700]

One hundred thousand damage in one strike.

Alex flew. Not thirty meters like the fight’s first strike — Alex activated F4 at the impact point, the Veil reading the strike’s spiritual plane at the moment of contact and orienting Alex’s body so the momentum carried him between two trees instead of against one.

Twelve meters between the trees.

Alex landed feet first — his body responding to F4 even though the channels were under pressure, months of training being exactly what it was in this moment: something the body did without the mind having to ask.

Standing.

---

The angel crossed the clearing.

Not at the speed of the fight’s beginning — the wounded arm partially limited its movement mechanics, the plane‑between‑life‑and‑death wound acting differently from F2’s edge wounds because the damage came from the plane the repressor’s body used as substrate.

Slower than at the start.

Not slow.

It reached Alex in two seconds.

Alex activated F1’s scythe.

The crimson edge formed in his left hand — his right still with his wrist at seventy percent, F1 compensating through the channel to sustain the edge even though his hand didn’t have full strength.

The angel struck the scythe.

F1’s edge didn’t give way — it absorbed part of the impact, the Fragment processing the strike as it processed all strikes, the energy entering the channel.

But the strike came from the repressor’s left arm — the unwounded one, the one with the Gods’ plane’s full force behind it.

Alex stepped back four meters.

The scythe held.

[Alex HP: 189,700 → 151,200]

---

[F1 Corruption: 89% → 92.4%]

[F4 Corruption: 58% → 61.1%]

[F5 Corruption: 24% → 26.3%]

[F7 Corruption: 86.8% → 89.1%]

All four rising simultaneously.

F1 at the front — pushing toward the threshold where the Harvester began to whisper. The other three following it, combat pressure amplifying all four channels at the same time in a way that single‑Fragment training didn’t cover, two‑Fragment training didn’t cover, that three months of ocean and mountain had prepared the body to sustain but not for this.

Not for four Fragments under combat pressure against something from the Gods’ plane.

---

The first whisper arrived the moment F1’s corruption crossed ninety‑two.

Not aloud — inside the Fragment’s channel, the kind of communication the Fragments had with the bearer when they wanted something the bearer wasn’t giving them.

*Get the others.*

It wasn’t F1 alone. It was F1 and F4 and F5 and F7 in the same instant — four channels with the same direction, the Harvester fragmented into four parts of the same bearer telling the bearer the same thing from four different angles with the coherence of something that knew exactly what it wanted.

*F3 and F6. Complete us.*

*The power you feel now is a fraction.*

*A fraction of what you are.*

*Of what you could be.*

Alex heard it.

And kept fighting.

---

The angel reached him with its left elbow to Alex’s side — not the fist, the elbow, more efficient in the reduced space between the trees where a full fist’s momentum required distance the forest didn’t have.

The elbow found Alex’s ribs. The ribs that had taken the fight’s first impact against the tree. The ribs with forty‑five minutes of accumulated damage.

Two gave way.

[Alex HP: 151,200 → 118,600]

Alex bent from the pain instinct before his mind could tell him not to, and in the moment his body bent, F1’s scythe traced the arc corresponding to that position — not the arc Alex would have consciously chosen, the arc F1 chose with the available posture.

F1’s edge reached the angel’s left thigh.

Not a clean cut — the angle was oblique, the edge entering sideways. But it entered.

[Angel — eighth cut — left thigh]

The impossible‑colored blood. The hiss against the forest floor.

The angel took Alex by his right arm — the wrist, the point where the bone had given way in the fight’s first minute and that Emily had healed to seventy percent.

And squeezed.

The bone gave way completely.

[Alex HP: 118,600 → 94,300]

Alex released F1’s scythe — not by choice, by the pain reflex the nervous system executed before any training could intercept it.

The angel threw him against the nearest tree.

---

[Alex HP: 94,300 → 71,800]

The thirty‑meter tree held the impact.

Alex didn’t hold it the same way.

Against the trunk with his right arm nonfunctional, two ribs given way, an additional ninety thousand damage from this exchange on top of everything before.

[F1 Corruption: 92.4% → 94.8%]

The whispers louder.

*Get the others. Now. F3 is forty meters away.*

*F6 is thirty‑five.*

*Take them.*

*Don’t ask permission.*

*Take them.*

The trance’s edge.

Alex recognized it.

Raven with F3.

Jessica with F6.

Forty meters away. Thirty‑five.

---

The angel crossed the space between them.

Alex saw the left fist coming — the unwounded arm, the arm with the repressor’s full force behind it.

He activated F4.

His body moving at that angle, dodging most of the fist — the strike’s edge instead of its center.

The angel’s strike edge instead of its center was still enough to lift Alex off the ground.

But not to send him against the tree again.

Alex landed five meters away feet first. ℯℯ𝘭.

[Alex HP: 71,800 → 48,200]

Standing.

With forty‑eight thousand HP and two ribs given way and his right arm nonfunctional and the corruption of all four Fragments at the threshold where the whispers didn’t stop.

Standing.

---

The angel evaluated.

Alex’s posture — standing, his left hand extended with F1 active without the scythe because his right arm couldn’t hold it, his eyes without the trance but with the pressure of four channels at their limit visible in his expression.

The angel came again.

The right fist this time.

Alex didn’t dodge.

He activated F5.

Dominion — which had been the most stable of the original three for months, which at twenty‑eight percent corruption still didn’t push toward bearer control.

Toward the fist’s will.

Toward the movement’s intention.

F5 pushing against the repressor’s will to move that arm at that angle at that moment — not with full Dominion’s force, with F5’s force at twenty‑eight percent.

The angel’s fist slowed.

It didn’t stop. It slowed.

Two tenths of a second difference between normal speed and speed with F5 pushing against its will.

Enough for Alex to tilt his head four centimeters.

The fist passed where Alex’s head had been.

The fist’s edge instead of its center — the same way Alex had done with the left fist — reached Alex’s left shoulder.

[Alex HP: 48,200 → 21,400]

Twenty‑one thousand HP.

Alex on the ground this time — not thrown by the impact, given way by the accumulated weight of the entire fight in a body that no longer had the resources to remain standing after taking that.

[F1 Corruption: 94.8% → 96.3%]

The whispers at maximum volume.

*Take them.*

*Raven. Jessica. Take them.*

*Complete us.*

*The angel falls when you’re complete.*

*You know it.*

*You know it.*

Alex against the forest floor.

All four Fragments pushing toward the two that were missing with the urgency of something that was twenty meters from being complete and could feel that distance with the same certainty a person feels hunger.

The angel above him.

And Grim between them.

**"Master."** His small crimson flames in the skeleton’s eighty centimeters, the core without the transformation, without the original Harvester’s scythe. Only Grim. **"Listen to me."**

Alex looked at him.

**"The whispers are right that you could take F3 and F6 now."** Grim. **"And they’re right that the angel is harder without them."**

"I know."

**"And they’re right that the power you feel now is a fraction."**

"I know."

**"What they don’t say —"** Grim, **"— is that taking F3 and F6 without Raven and Jessica yielding them voluntarily is not the same as receiving them."**

"Why?"

**"Because a Fragment that arrives by force arrives with resistance in the channel."** His flames. **"And resistance in the channel of two Fragments at the same time when you already have four unstable — that doesn’t complete you. That collapses you."**

Alex looked at his hands.

The four points of light — F1 at ninety‑six with the whispers, F4 and F5 and F7 following it.

**"Besides —"** said Grim, **"— Raven didn’t refuse to give it to you."**

The angel pushed Grim aside — the same lateral movement it had used before, without the frontal clash that produced the pulse between planes.

Grim flew four meters.

The angel above Alex.

And Alex with twenty‑one thousand HP and four Fragments whispering and his eyes clear.

Not in a trance.

Clear.

The angel raised its left arm.

Alex looked at the arm.

And smiled.

Not the seventh space’s trance smile.

The smile of someone who had just found what they were looking for in F7 — not in the subconscious searching for the previous cycle’s fight signature, but in the instant where F7 responded to the bearer’s current state with the memory corresponding to that exact state.

What the original Harvester had done when the previous cycle’s repressor had it exactly like this.

On the ground.

Without power.

With incomplete Fragments.

**"Did you find it?"** said Grim from four meters away.

"Yes," said Alex.

**"What is it?"**

The angel’s left arm descending toward Alex.

"That the original Harvester didn’t win cycle forty‑two’s fight," said Alex. "It only used the fight to build the Silent Threshold."

**"And?"**

"And I don’t need to win this fight now." Alex looking at the angel. "I only need the team to survive while Raven and Jessica decide."

All four Fragments with the whispers at maximum.

Alex ignoring them.

And opening F7 to maximum.

For the frenzy.
