Chapter 373 - 373- God’s Gate (Part 11)
The potion was seemingly burning the man’s flesh as steam started rising up from his hand. His cries of agony and despair made Arthur step back and let go of his hand. The man then started slamming his limbs on the ground while shaking from the immense burning pain.
“What’s happening, sir?” Germa frowned as he quickly ordered everyone to step back. Everyone started to panic seeing that, especially the man’s family, who didn’t know what to do at that moment seeing their loved one in such immense pain.
Meanwhile, the black matter continued oozing out of the man’s body, slowly spreading across the rest of it. From his arms to his torso, then the rest of his limbs like a plague taking over weak prey.
“Shit…” Arthur cursed as he quickly looked around. “Get out of the way! Don’t get close to him! He’s changing!”
Even when he didn’t know what was happening, he could see that this person was experiencing a very horrifying transformation.
‘How do I stop that? The health potion had made it worse!’ Arthur clenched his teeth as he tried to think of a solution. Seeing the entire group panic while the man was getting completely destroyed, Arthur found himself unable to think of anything.
“Ugh, dammit! Germa, help me! We need to get that slimey substance off of him!” Arthur said as he quickly activated Frost Flame and approached the man. “Don’t touch the substance. Hold him still.”
Germa quickly grabbed the man’s legs and pinned him to the ground, stopping him from rolling around in pain. Then, Arthur quickly approached him, and with a careful hand, he aimed the fire at the black substance, trying to take control of his body.
The fire immediately touched the substance and caught into it, starting to freeze quickly. The man’s cries increased severalfold as the burning feeling was suddenly mixed with an equally painful freezing coldness.
“Hold on!” Arthur clenched his teeth as he watched the scene. ‘Come on! Work!’ He repeated this in his head again and again.
He didn’t know if the idea he had just executed was good or not, but that was the only thing he could come up with at that moment. Seeing the man in immense pain while this substance took over didn’t sit well with him.
‘It’s freezing quickly…’ Watching the scene silently, Arthur noticed the fire spreading quickly, covering the black substance. At the same time, it completely stopped spreading as if it had been killed off by the ice. That made Arthur’s eyes light up as he saw some hope.
However, all that hope quickly shattered in an instant as out of nowhere, the ice started cracking before it burst and the black substance oozed out of it, continuing to travel down the man’s body.
“No, no, no!!” He yelled as he tried to use the flame again. Yet again, the black matter was able to break the ice even quicker.
“Sir!”
“Dammit, its not freezing! I can’t stop it!” Arthur cursed. ‘How did it break the ice so easily?? It’s the Frost Flames for God’s sake!’
Knowing his ability, Arthur was aware of how strong that ice was. The fact that it could break it that easily raised many alarms in his head.
“AAAAAAGH!!!”
In a few seconds, the aggressive substance reached the man’s legs and even his face as it slowly started entering his orifices, making him gag and choke visibly, his eyes widening to the extreme.
The people around him watched the scene in pure horror. The man’s limbs shook and spasmed as the substance invaded his mouth, nose, and even ears. Arthur watched in complete powerlessness as the man was killed cruelly.
His eyes flickered with horror, fear, and immense shock. It was a sight so repulsive it even made him take a step back.
Slowly and cruelly, the man suffocated as his eyes were drowned with the substance. Before disappearing into the darkness, the man looked one last time into Arthur’s eyes, where the boy saw all kinds of emotions.
Eventually, the substance completely covered the man’s body from head to toe. At that moment, Arthur heard small children cry in terror as they tried to rush forward, only to be grabbed by the adults around them.
“…”
“Sir…”
“Don’t… Don’t let anyone get close to the substance…” Arthur muttered with a dazed expression. “It could spread to everyone else. We need to stay away.”
“Yes, sir…”
Meanwhile, Arthur kept staring at the blob of darkness, unable to understand what had happened.
“Why? Why did that substance appear?” He asked himself. ‘Was it the injury he sustained from the monster?’
“Quickly, everyone who got injured from the monsters, gather at the front!” Without wasting time, Arthur ordered the group. His heart was racing as a horrifying suspicion started creeping into his mind. If his suspicion was right, then a disaster was about to hit the group unlike anything he could’ve imagined.
“What?”
“Do it quickly, Germa!” Arthur repeated.
The blind man didn’t understand what was happening but still did what the leader asked. The people were apprehensive, looking at one another as they spread around. They were smart enough to quickly catch on as to why Arthur ordered that.
But, eventually, the injured ones hesitantly stepped forward. A horrified look was clear on their faces. They didn’t know what kind of fate was awaiting them.
“Check their injuries carefully. I need to know if they are also suffering from whatever this black susbstance is.”
‘If they have it too… We are so screwed…’ As he watched Germa slowly step forward to check, Arthur tried to keep his calm. A few seconds of time felt like the tensest time he experienced in the longest while.
Germa carefully examined the people with as much caution as he could muster. One by one, he looked at their injuries, then he looked at Arthur.
“Nothing, sir. Their injuries look very normal.”
“…” The boy blinked before he exhaled a small breath. ‘Oh, I’m so glad. I almost had a heart attack there. But… If that’s not the cause, then why did that man…’
Somehow, Arthur’s confusion increased several folds now that the only possibility he could think of turned out to be wrong. So, his eyes wandered to the black blob of matter. He couldn’t see the man’s body beyond the thick, black layer of gooey matter.
“Keep an eye on the injured ones and check their condition.” After a moment of contemplation, Arthur decided to do something.
“What are you going to do, sir?”
“I need to check this substance. I might be able to save the man or… at least reclaim his corpse.” He muttered as he stepped forward and crouched near the substance, keeping a good distance away from it so as not to touch it by mistake.
From up close, Arthur could still see the substance moving and swaying as if it had a mind of its own. It looked immensely repulsive and disgusting, to the point where Arthur could barely even look at it. The smell was equally horrible, a mix of the foulest stenches his nose had the full displeasure of ever experiencing.
But, he had to somehow figure out what it was. Perhaps, the entire trip’s success could rely on whether he can figure out what was happening or not.
