Chapter 303 - 185: First Contact and the Harm of the Nether Fog
Hongxuan died a worthy death?
Even though they were startled by the sudden news of visitors from the Royal Court, Chong Jingtian and the others were still taken aback by Wu Chenpei’s words.
He’d changed his tune far too quickly.
Lu Kai stared blankly at Wu Chenpei. ’Is this really the Saint Envoy?’
“Heh…” Xia Hanshi couldn’t help but let out a sneer. He knew it. It had been the same way when Wu Chenpei killed his brother all those years ago. He’d thought Wu Chenpei was actually going to fight to the death, but instead, the man had just spat some harsh words and turned tail.
No matter how angry or furious the man appeared, at his core, he didn’t dare take any risks. He always sought the safest path.
But the world wasn’t full of safe and easy tasks for the taking.
Wu Chenpei met the crowd’s gazes, each one filled with a different meaning. He knew exactly what they were thinking, but he wouldn’t let it affect him. He had his own calculations to make.
He had dared to show his anger and fury moments ago because he had leverage. Yuan Capital was Yuan Capital, after all. If they were to clash head-on with Ying Feng, neither side would come out unscathed.
But that was before. Now that people from the Royal Court had arrived, the situation was completely different. After all, Yuan Capital was still holding an official from the Royal Court captive.
If this were to be exposed, the consequences would be unforeseeable.
Furthermore, the ruins had been jointly sealed by the leaders of the four cities using a rather formidable method. Even if the other three cities were to combine their strength, they would have found it impossible to break the seal.
But now that the Royal Court had arrived, it was obviously impossible to think a sealed ruin could stop them.
’Whether I like it or not, for now, I have no choice but to spinelessly accept Hongxuan’s death.’
Of course, in his mind, this was merely a temporary measure.
’I’ll have to wait until I make contact and feel them out before I can figure out why the Royal Court came so suddenly, and whether there are any openings to exploit.’
“A worthy death?” Chong Jingtian stared at Wu Chenpei’s strained smile. “Does the Saint Envoy truly believe that?”
“I didn’t expect him to get entangled with the Faceless Divine Son, either.” Wu Chenpei sighed. As he composed himself, his expression grew more natural. “The fault is mine.”
Chong Jingtian fell into a brief silence and exchanged a look with the others. The Royal Court’s arrival had thrown their plans into disarray. Right now, Wu Chenpei and Yuan Capital were no longer the most important issue.
“In that case, we must ask the Saint Envoy to wait elsewhere for now,” Chong Jingtian said, clearly not intending to bring Wu Chenpei along to meet the Royal Court’s delegation.
“The people of the Royal Court are not a benevolent bunch,” Wu Chenpei’s expression changed as he spoke urgently. “If a planet has no value to them, they will not hesitate to watch its billions of inhabitants die.”
“The entire reason we cooperated with the Hong Family was because the Royal Court is too powerful! We have no means to resist them and could be wiped out at any moment!”
“So, you think you can make them hesitate?” Xia Hanshi asked, his tone laced with amusement.
Wu Chenpei was left speechless. He said in a low voice, “I only know that casting Yuan Capital aside without even knowing the Royal Court’s objective is not a wise choice.”
“Besides, through Hongxuan, I’ve gained a considerable understanding of the Royal Court. You’ll need me to vet the information they provide.”
Xia Hanshi didn’t argue this time. Chong Jingtian, however, after a moment’s thought, still shook his head.
“Too many people at this meeting would be inappropriate. Min Shengrui and Zhong Yanghui will remain here with you. We will relay all relevant information to you after we’ve met with them.”
’Wu Chenpei resisted internally but knew this was the only possible outcome. Ying Feng had the upper hand now; they would never let him get near the people from the Royal Court so easily.’
Seeing Wu Chenpei’s tacit agreement, Chong Jingtian finally called Jiang Shu Mo inside.
Jiang Shu Mo arrived right on cue. On his way, he had just crossed paths with the party claiming to be from the Royal Court, and though he knew something major was happening in the conference room, he was still startled when he opened the door.
All five elders were present—this was clearly no ordinary matter.
His gaze swept subconsciously around the room as numerous speculations flooded his mind. Chong Jingtian then asked, “The visitors from the Royal Court—what’s the situation?”
“There are eighteen of them in total. I ran into them just as they were about to enter the city on my way back. The vast majority appear to be guards or soldiers of considerable strength, but there are four individuals who are most noteworthy.”
Jiang Shu Mo had been very observant. “Their leader appears to be a middle-aged man with scales on his head. The other three are very young, and they looked me over without any reservation. Their status must be quite high.”
“One senior and three youths…”
The people present were all worldly and experienced. From this configuration, they could already infer a few things.
Shi Yunzhou hesitated. “This doesn’t seem like a routine visit. They must have a specific purpose. Could they be here for the Great Venerable Red Flame Thunder Resonator?”
As this was the matter of their utmost concern at the moment, their thoughts naturally turned to the Morning Star Tier profession.
“For the Great Venerable Red Flame Thunder Resonator?” Zhou Yanwu frowned. “But the Royal Court shouldn’t know that we have it. Otherwise, why would they only show up now?”
“Perhaps they didn’t know before, but they might have found out through some other means,” Shi Yunzhou said. “Otherwise, the timing is too coincidental. We only just shifted our focus to this profession, and now the Royal Court sends people down.”
“Could it be because someone was ’recognized’?” Chong Jingtian quickly hypothesized. In recent times, this was the only unusual event related to the Great Venerable Red Flame Thunder Resonator.
At this speculation, everyone’s gaze involuntarily turned to Wu Chenpei.
“I’m not sure. Hongxuan never mentioned that the Royal Court could discover someone after they were recognized,” Wu Chenpei said quickly, understanding their implication. “This might be a secret that even he didn’t know. The Hong Family isn’t a particularly powerful family within the Royal Court.”
“Regardless,” Xia Hanshi spoke, drawing everyone’s attention. “This is a secret of our Red Thunder Star. Before we make contact, we should operate under the assumption that they are here for the Great Venerable.”
“Agreed,” Chong Jingtian nodded. “The first issue is explaining why we concealed it. The Royal Court’s people didn’t find it last time, so we’ll need a good story.”
