Chapter 235 - 151: Faceless Ghost Divine Son?
Chapter 235: Chapter 151: Faceless Ghost Divine Son?
He had been lying low, seizing the initiative. He’d had a chance to reap the greatest rewards without even waiting for the Holy Banquet to begin, but that was all in the past now.
“What’s the status of the other Divine Spirit’s Believers?” he asked again.
“Not even one in ten survived. The rest are just struggling to hang on,” the Faceless Man prostrating on the ground said, shaking his head.
After a moment of silence, the grayish-white crystal spoke. “Wait for things to blow over, then find a way out of the city. Use a low-tech method to pass on the message…”
Before it could finish, the metal ceiling overhead suddenly began to tremble violently. It emitted a harsh, grating sound and then burst apart.
Chunks of concrete rained down, and twisted steel rebar jutted out from the rupture. Amid the swirling dust, a familiar, brawny arm came smashing through.
’This is…’ The grayish-white crystal in the center of the altar flickered rapidly. He never expected to see this arm again. A sense of terror welled up within him; he was traumatized by their last encounter.
The arm punched through, then clenched into a tight fist. A circular shockwave erupted outward. Spiderweb cracks spread across the surrounding walls at terrifying speed, and the vibrations sent loose concrete fragments flying into the air.
The Faceless Man who had just been prostrating on the floor was sent flying, smashing into a wall and turning into a bloody pulp.
BOOM!
The ceiling was torn open, flooding the space with daylight. Teng Liang gripped the edges of the hole and stuck his enormous head through. His voice boomed like a bell, “This is the place.”
At the signal, numerous Judges leaped down, spreading out from the entryway in all directions like a floodtide.
’How can this be? It’s that guy again!’
The grayish-white crystal tumbled into a corner, covered in dust and debris. He was shocked and furious, finding the situation utterly unbelievable.
’How did they find my hiding spot so quickly?’
’No, I absolutely can’t be discovered! The main body still doesn’t know what’s happening here. Damn that Nether Fog, and damn that Teng Liang!’
He suppressed all his fluctuations, gradually turning into an inconspicuous crystal hidden among the concrete fragments.
“So it really was here…” Bu Siqi stood at the edge of the opening, arms crossed, staring down into the cavity with considerable surprise.
“These Deceitful God’s Followers all seem to love building their nests underground,” Su Chen remarked from the side, not going down himself.
“It’s not like they have a choice. The Faceless Ghost Followers have it easier, since they can disguise themselves as other people. But the Black Tuo Followers, for example, have features that are too obvious. You can spot them at a glance if they’re not disguised,” Bu Siqi said, shaking his head.
“And even with a disguise, their behavior is still bizarre. Plus, they have to conceal the energy fluctuations from their Deceitful Artifacts, which requires special materials to block detection. Going underground is pretty much their only option.”
The level of resistance inside was appallingly low. Never mind Teng Liang, even Bu Siqi didn’t have to lift a finger. Wu Yang and a few Tier Three Judges handled everything.
“Only five Believers?” Bu Siqi looked at the hooded figures being brought up in custody, greatly disappointed. “And here I thought it was a major nest.”
“Most of them were probably killed in the last attack,” Teng Liang said. “There likely aren’t many Believers left in the city. This is just the mop-up operation.”
“But they managed to take Wei Yinsuo down with them,” Bu Siqi sighed. Even though he couldn’t have been happier to see Wei Yinsuo dead, the man was still a valuable asset to the Judicial Court. So he couldn’t exactly say he was thrilled.
“Old Wu, find any strange items?” Su Chen asked Wu Yang, who was standing nearby.
“Not yet,” Wu Yang replied, shaking his head. “This place is pretty big. My men are still searching.”
Su Chen nodded thoughtfully. His senses wouldn’t lie to him; there had to be something strange hidden here.
After a while longer, items were brought up one by one and stacked together. The collection was more or less complete.
Bu Siqi, on the other hand, was looking at a rough map they had constructed and seemed quite surprised. “This place really is huge. And there are lots of signs of habitation. I’d estimate no fewer than thirty Believers used to live here.”
“I guess I was wrong. It really was a major nest, just an empty one now, unfortunately.”
Wu Yang also reported, “The items we’ve collected are all fairly common malevolent artifacts related to the Faceless Ghost. No Deceitful Artifacts among them.”
“None?” Su Chen raised an eyebrow and walked over to a large iron chest where all the collected items were being stored.
There were masks of human skin, and even individual facial features—noses, mouths, and the like. It was a rather unsettling sight.
Su Chen began rummaging through the contents.
“What’re you looking for?” Bu Siqi asked, crouching nearby and watching Su Chen.
“Just making sure we didn’t miss anything important,” Su Chen said casually, lightly touching each item.
Bu Siqi watched for a moment before getting bored and jumping down into the hole to take a look around below.
Suddenly, Su Chen’s movements froze. His expression changed the instant his fingertip touched a grayish-white crystal.
’He… he can actually detect me?’
Inside the grayish-white crystal, the consciousness of the Divine Son stared at the large face looming over it.
He could clearly see Su Chen’s expression change the moment he touched the grayish-white crystal. He had obviously detected something.
’I’ve already enveloped myself in Divine Power. The Father God’s power is supreme at concealment. How could he…’
He had encountered far too many inexplicable things in Ying Feng, things he had never seen anywhere else.
A moment later, a terrifying sensation washed over him. He felt a pulling force from the outside, and his consciousness was uncontrollably drawn out.
He could feel the Divine Power enveloping his consciousness being constantly drained away, and even his own consciousness was being dragged out along with it.
This unbelievable event struck him with terror. ’He can devour the Father God’s power? And even my consciousness?’ he thought, horrified.
’What in the world is this thing!’
He was certain that the being before him was no human, but some other life form wearing human skin.
[Foreign energy invasion detected. Assimilation successful. Acquired Mid-tier Faceless Ghost Divine Power. Applicable to Tier Six and below.]
[Incomplete consciousness of the Faceless Ghost Divine Son detected. Successfully absorbed by Priest. Unlocked disguise option: Faceless Ghost Priest. Gained ability—Faceless: Collect the biological information of others to perform a disguise.]
“Faceless Ghost Divine Son?” Su Chen stared at the system notification in astonishment. He could faintly hear a wail in his ears as he looked back down at the crystal in his hand, surprised.
“There was a Divine Son hiding in here?”
’Could it be the one that possessed Meng Qi?’ he couldn’t help but speculate. ’Is it a real descendant of the Faceless Ghost? Or is it just another rank among the Believers?’
’So this must be what I sensed earlier,’ Su Chen thought, weighing the grayish-white crystal in his hand. Faint cracks were now visible within it.
The Divine Power had been drained, and the hidden consciousness of the Divine Son had been extracted as well. The crystal was useless now.
’A dose of Mid-tier Faceless Ghost Power. Not bad. And my Priest gained a new ability. Disguise… I’ll have to try it out when I get the chance…’
Su Chen casually placed it back where he had found it.
All that remained was the clean-up. Having found what he was looking for, Su Chen lost interest in staying. He said a word to Teng Liang and headed back to the Judicial Court.
On the way back, sitting in the hovercar, Su Chen was still thinking. ’To be able to create a perfect disguised vessel like Meng Qi… could it really be the son of the Faceless Ghost? An incomplete consciousness…’
…
「Meanwhile, in a place extremely far from Ying Feng…」
A colossal, thousand-meter-tall, faceless statue was moving slowly. Its form was fluid, and its head was a perfectly smooth sphere, devoid of any facial features.
The giant statue hovered eerily above the ground, moving slowly toward some unknown destination. Grayish-white mist parted before it. A great number of silent Faceless Men followed in its wake.
A slender figure stood upon the statue’s shoulder, its facial features constantly shifting.
One moment it was a white-haired old man, the next a seductive young woman, then a staid and serious middle-aged man.
At a certain moment, it suddenly spoke, its voice a layered chorus: “There’s been a problem in Ying Feng. A part of my consciousness has been destroyed.”
“Divine Son…” someone beside him spoke. This one surprisingly had his own distinct features—an old man whose face was a roadmap of deep wrinkles. “It seems your plan has failed.”
He spoke without a trace of fanaticism. “Do you know what happened?”
“This Nether Fog blocks everything. I have no way of knowing what happened, only that it has vanished,” the Divine Son said, shaking his head.
“That complicates things,” the old man frowned. “It seems our only option is to proceed with initiating the Holy Banquet.”
The Divine Son’s features and voice continued to shift. “It’s rare to find a planet capable of producing a Morning Star Tier. Compared to the Holy Banquet, I’d much rather corrupt its spirituality.”
“Only that will bring the Father God greater joy.”
