My Professions Have Too Much Personality

Chapter 227 - 147: A Heavy Fog

Chapter 227: Chapter 147: A Heavy Fog

“Still in the Judicial Court?”

A sharp glint flashed through Chong Jingtian’s eyes as he listened to Lei Tieyan continue:

“I surveyed the scene and discovered they broke out from the inside. Although they were quick, they didn’t even kill all the guards. Several were left seriously injured.”

“This indicates that the force they used wasn’t particularly strong. It should have been very difficult for them to leave without a trace.”

“That’s right…” Chong Jingtian mused for a moment, agreeing. “More of their strength was focused on the execution site. There were several Priests there, and they even used a Deceitful Artifact. With you holding down the fort here at the Judicial Court, plus the protective barrier, causing a major disturbance would have actually made it more difficult to leave.”

“The ones who came to snatch the body couldn’t have been very strong.”

Several Priests had actually acted at the same time over there.

Su Chen was quite astonished. ’It seems that thing possessing Meng Qi is really something, to be able to mobilize such a powerful force.’

He stood to one side, maintaining a low profile.

But while Chong Jingtian and Lei Tieyan had created an Energy Barrier to contain the sound of their conversation, they made no effort to exclude him. Clearly, they felt he was qualified to listen in.

“They killed several Priests…” Lei Tieyan sounded surprised as well, his expression turning thoughtful. “It seems this was planned long in advance. Killing Wei Yinsuo, snatching the body… So, this was all spearheaded by the Faceless Ghost Followers.”

Lei Tieyan believed both incidents were the work of the same group. With one happening right after the other, he couldn’t help but think so.

“Indeed. We’ve undoubtedly caught a big one.”

Chong Jingtian’s gaze turned cold, though a flicker of imperceptible worry crossed his face. “To be able to detach from Meng Qi’s body and possess another… an ability like that must have been aided by Divine Power. An ordinary Priest probably wouldn’t be enough.”

“The cost to create a vessel capable of such a near-perfect disguise must be immense.”

He felt a faint sense of regret. He shouldn’t have studied that corpse; he should have destroyed it immediately. But his original intent was to find some clues, to devise a counter-detection method in case something like this appeared again.

“What about Wei Yinsuo?” Lei Tieyan hesitated. “Why was he targeted and killed? Could he have discovered some secret?”

Chong Jingtian couldn’t figure it out either and could only offer a simple hypothesis. “As for Old Wei, it might have been a matter of convenience, a good opportunity to weaken our forces.”

He sighed in frustration. “The crucial question is why Old Wei sent everyone around him away before he died. Hopefully… we can find some clues from the ones who snatched the body.”

Lei Tieyan grew pensive, then continued, “Dealing with ordinary Faceless Ghost Followers is one thing, but this Meng Qi… his disguise is terrifying. If he transforms into someone else, it’ll be like finding a drop of water in the ocean…”

“That is my concern as well.” A hint of worry crept into Chong Jingtian’s voice. “The Judicial Court is too large; no one can monitor every blind spot around the clock.”

Once Meng Qi transformed into someone else, he would become untraceable. The thought was terrifying.

“Chief, Judge Lei…” The silent Su Chen suddenly spoke from the side. “I don’t think you need to be so concerned.”

“Oh?” The two men looked at him simultaneously.

“His disguise may be formidable, but it can’t be flawless. Otherwise, he could have just disguised himself as Zhu Xuan,” Su Chen explained.

“At the time, Zhu Xuan’s death caused a huge commotion. If he had been able to disguise himself as Zhu Xuan, he might not have been discovered by Senior Brother Teng.”

“That makes sense.” Chong Jingtian considered it and had to agree. “I hadn’t thought of that. You’re right. If he could have impersonated Zhu Xuan, he probably would have remained undiscovered to this day.”

“A near-perfect disguise like his must have its flaws.”

“In that case…” Chong Jingtian mused for a moment before turning back to Su Chen. “I’m leaving this matter to you. Are you confident you can find him?”

“Leave it to me?” Su Chen’s first instinct was to refuse, but the words caught in his throat, and a hesitant expression crossed his face.

’Easier said than done,’ he thought. ’The Judicial Court is huge; finding that guy won’t be simple at all.’

’Besides, my deduction is just a theory. Who’s to say the guy doesn’t have other tricks up his sleeve?’

’Unless I can find a lead…’ Su Chen thought of something. ’Perhaps I can kill two birds with one stone.’

“What is it?” Chong Jingtian frowned. He’d been keeping an eye on Su Chen; the young man had willpower, could withstand monotony, possessed more than enough Talent, and wasn’t arrogant. All in all, Chong Jingtian was very pleased with him.

His background was a little problematic, but his file had already been altered. After a few years, no one would be able to bring it up.

It was just that he was too “indolent”—not lazy in the typical sense, but rather possessing a kind of indifference toward everything else.

The time he’d defeated Zhu Xuan was only because the man had provoked him on the spot. And later, he’d only captured Priest Black Tuo because Jiang Shu Mo had wanted to use them as bait.

Su Chen’s initiative to visit Wei Yinsuo a couple of days ago had pleased him greatly; he’d thought the boy was finally willing to start winning allies. But now that he was being asked to handle something, that indolent streak seemed to be flaring up again.

“I’m afraid I’m not up to the task,” Su Chen said with a wry smile. “If I fail to find him, won’t that jeopardize this important matter?”

“Those who achieve great things cannot afford to be indecisive,” Chong Jingtian chided, displeased. “When a task is before you, just do your best. Do all that is humanly possible, and leave the rest to fate.”

’Indecisive? I’m sure Wei Yinsuo would have agreed with that.’

Su Chen’s mind wandered for a moment. He took a deep breath, composed his expression, and put on an air of having been enlightened. “I will take the Chief’s lesson to heart. In that case, I will do my best to find him.”

“However, I hope the Chief will grant me permission to view the files on the Faceless Ghost.”

Seeing that Su Chen had finally come to his senses, Chong Jingtian nodded in satisfaction. “Good, that’s more like it. I will expand your clearance to allow you to access information on the Faceless Ghost.”

“One more thing,” Chong Jingtian added. “I’m going to have the ordinary Judges station themselves outside the city for the time being. Unless it is absolutely necessary, they are not to return to the Judicial Court.”

He knew that finding Meng Qi would not be as simple as it seemed. The best he could do was try to minimize any potential complications.
