Chapter 244 162: New Year's First Day
Lazy morning light filtered through the window, falling upon the comforter.
January 1st. The first day of the new year.
Jiangg Ning stirred from her slumber. She felt disoriented for a moment before her unfocused gaze slowly sharpened. She closed her eyes, dozing for another moment, then sat up.
Beside her, Jiangg Yao was still sleeping in.
Jiangg Ning usually woke up at seven in the morning and went to bed at eleven at night. Her biological clock was exceptionally precise.
In the entire past year, the times she had slept in could be counted on one hand, and each of those occasions had something to do with Chen Yuan.
After sitting up, the first thing she did was move her little sister’s dead-weight leg off of her.
As for Jiangg Yao, one of her legs was still draped over her sister. Half of her fair cheek was buried in the pillow, and she was lying on her stomach.
She was sleeping so soundly it seemed like the sky could fall without disturbing her.
The soft comforter on the bed only reached her waist. Since she was just wearing a slip dress, her slender, bony shoulders were exposed to the air. Luckily, the house had heating. Otherwise, sleeping like that all night would have definitely resulted in a cold.
Her unrestrained hair was a mess.
Perhaps sensing Jiangg Ning getting up beside her, Yaoyao wrinkled her nose slightly and quietly pulled her feet back under the covers.
Jiangg Ning rubbed her slightly numb lower back and shot her sister an exasperated look.
This was their most typical morning scene, one that had repeated countless times. Ever since they were little, Jiangg Ning had woken up to this exact situation more times than she could count.
Yaoyao would either be clinging to her like a koala, have an arm wrapped around her neck, or have her long legs thrown completely over her. At first, Jiangg Ning found it unbearable, but she had since grown silently accustomed to the pressure.
Now, if she went on a business trip and Jiangg Yao wasn’t there, she would even feel like something was missing.
She ran a hand through her slightly messy hair, her long legs tapping the floor twice as she searched for her slippers.
Jiangg Ning’s cheeks were a little pale as she staggered out of the bedroom to wash up. It was proof that even the most beautiful women look haggard when they first wake up. When Jiangg Ning stood before the mirror and saw her plain-faced reflection, her eyes widened, and she hurriedly examined her puffy eyelids.
‘It’s all Yaoyao’s fault. She just had to drag me outside into the cold wind late last night. I didn’t even get to put on my face mask properly, or else my eyes wouldn’t be this swollen.’
Soon, the sound of rushing water echoed from the bathroom.
The curtain on the new year had officially been raised.
…
“Happy New Year.”
“Here’s a red envelope for you. Take it and go find Grandma, okay? Don’t run off.”
Jiangg Ning bent down slightly and patted the head of the obedient little boy with a bowl cut standing by her leg, a serene smile on her face.
In the Liu Family’s living room, people came and went. Many younger relatives were there to pay their New Year’s respects.
A mischievous child had knocked over the candy dish on the coffee table, scattering sunflower seeds and peanuts everywhere.
Amidst the boisterous atmosphere, Jiangg Ning and Jiangg Yao were undoubtedly the center of attention.
The two of them were wearing clothes of the exact same style, except Yaoyao’s knee-length down jacket was navy blue, while Jiangg Ning’s was light purple.
A short-haired woman holding a small baby walked in through a side door.
As soon as the two sisters saw the baby, they walked over in unison.
“Oh my, whose little darling is this? So cute~”
“Quick, say ‘Auntie’! Can you talk yet~”
The toddler blinked its big, dark eyes, looking with a dazed expression at the two aunties who seemed to know how to clone themselves. For a moment, it didn’t know which one to look at.
“This is your Auntie Ningning and Auntie Yaoyao. Do you recognize them?” the young mother asked gently, bouncing the baby in her arms.
“She definitely won’t recognize me, then. She was just a newborn the last time we met,” Jiangg Ning said, dangling a red envelope in front of the baby. “Want a red envelope?”
A chubby little hand reached out to grab it, its body leaning so far forward it almost tipped over. The baby wasn’t shy with strangers at all.
Jiangg Ning was instantly captivated by the cuteness. She pursed her lips and murmured, “So adorable. Let Auntie hold your little hand, and then I’ll give you the red envelope, okay?”
Her slender, jade-like fingers clasped the chubby hand that resembled a small turnip.
Jiangg Yao went even further, ruffling the baby’s fine, sparse hair.
Maternal instincts were practically bursting from the two of them. Perhaps this was just a woman’s nature.
They hadn’t been in the living room for long before a group of curious children gathered around them to ask for red envelopes. Maybe they had taken a liking to the pretty aunties, or maybe they were just fascinated by their identical twin faces.
After playing with the group of children for a while, both sisters felt their backs beginning to ache.
The elders of the Liu Family went to the main hall to entertain guests, and the men went outside to greet visitors, leaving the women and children to chat idly in the living room.
They sat together in small cliques. Some were already married, some had just started college. As for those who were Jiangg Yao and Jiangg Ning’s age and still single… there were only the two of them.
Usually, people like them became the focus of everyone’s discussion.
It was because they hadn’t followed the mainstream path, drawing both criticism and concern.
Jiangg Ning knew she would eventually have to face this ordeal; it had become an annual routine in recent years.
The group of women sat together with their legs crossed, discussing various things while cracking open sunflower seeds. Jiangg Yao was off to the side, happily chatting with a younger cousin who was a student at the Kyoto Film Academy.
“I’m so jealous of Ningning’s skin. It looks amazing. We’re about the same age, but look at me—my skin is sagging, and I’ve completely lost my figure… What’s so great about having kids? If I’d known, I wouldn’t have gotten married either.”
“Hah! Weren’t you the one who, the year before last, was urging Ningning to hurry up and find a husband? You were constantly posting about your blissful married life on your Moments feed.”
