Chapter 161: Kitchen Table Confrontation Lv.5, The Husband Who Already Knew

  • Next Chapter

"I told him everything," Yuki said. "The affair. The duration. That I’m in love with someone else."

"You said that."

"I said that." Her voice cracked. The first crack. The calm facade splitting along a fault line she’d been holding together with willpower and koto melodies. "He listened. He didn’t interrupt. He sat at the table with his shoes on and he listened to his wife tell him she loved another man and he didn’t say a word until I finished."

"What did he say?"

"He said ’I failed you.’" Her voice broke. Full break. The sound of something structural giving way. "He said ’I know I failed you. I just didn’t know how to stop failing.’ He said he was sorry. And he meant it, Lucas. He meant it in a way that Richard never meant anything when Elena’s marriage ended. Kenji meant it in his bones."

Lucas closed his eyes. The apartment was dark. Elena’s hand found his back. Her palm flat between his shoulder blades. She was awake. She was listening. She was holding him upright while he held the phone and Yuki held herself together four miles away in a house that belonged to a man who’d just learned the shape of his failure.

"He wants to try again," Yuki said. "Counseling. He said he’d go. He said he’d try harder. He said he’d notice. He said he’d be present. He said he’d be the husband I deserved instead of the one he’d been." She was crying now. Not loud. The quiet Japanese crying. The kind where the tears fell and the breath stayed even and the shame of making noise was heavier than the grief. "He said he’s sorry. And he meant it. And I don’t know what to do because I love you but he’s my husband and he’s Marcus’s father and twenty-three years, Lucas. Twenty-three years of breakfast and laundry and sleeping next to the same person and knowing their breathing patterns better than my own."

"Yuki." His voice was quiet. The voice he’d used in Tokyo with Aiko. The voice he’d used with Patricia. The voice that said nothing and everything. "I won’t tell you what to do."

"I know."

"But you need to choose. Not for me. Not for Kenji. For you."

The silence that followed was the kind that had weight. It pressed against his ear through the phone. It filled the dark bedroom. It settled over Elena’s hand on his back and Aurora’s quiet presence in his prefrontal cortex and the sleeping city outside the window.

"I know," Yuki whispered. "I need to choose. I’ve never chosen anything. Not really. I chose Kenji because my parents introduced us and it seemed right. I chose America because Kenji wanted to come. I chose you because you saw me and I was so hungry to be seen that I forgot to ask myself if seeing was enough." She paused. "I don’t know how to choose. I’ve never learned."

"Then learn."

"How?"

"The same way you learned Japanese literature. One page at a time."

She laughed. Wet. Broken. The laugh of a woman who found something funny at the worst possible moment and couldn’t stop herself. "That’s a terrible metaphor."

"I know."

"It’s also perfect." She sniffed. "I’m going to try. One week. I’m going to stay with Kenji and try. Not because I think it’ll work. Because I need to know I tried before I leave. He deserves that. Twenty-three years deserves that."

"He does."

"So do I."

Elena’s hand moved on his back. The circular motion. The one that said I’m here without saying it. The motion she’d learned from him and he’d learned from sitting with broken women in facilities and the circle went around and around and came back to where it started.

"Yuki."

"What."

"Whatever you choose. I’ll be here."

"I know." Her voice steadier now. The crying done. The calm returning, but different. Not the flat calm of before. A worked-for calm. The calm of a woman who’d gone through something and come out the other side still standing. "One week. Then I decide."

"One week."

"Goodnight, Lucas."

"Goodnight, Yuki."

The call ended. The phone dark. The apartment silent. Elena’s hand still on his back.

"She’s going to leave him," Elena said. Her voice rough from sleep. Certain.

"You think?"

"I know. The same way I knew I was leaving Richard. The same way Victoria knew about Greg. Women who’ve already decided don’t call their lovers at 2 AM to say they’re going to try. They call to say goodbye to the version of themselves that was still trying to pretend."

*Elena knows because Elena lived it. The 2 AM phone call. The husband who’s sorry. The marriage that could maybe be saved if she just tried harder. She tried harder for years. It didn’t work. She knows it won’t work for Yuki either. Some marriages end because someone breaks them. Some marriages end because they were never whole.*

Aurora spoke. Quiet. The voice of an entity who’d been listening through his ears and feeling through his skin.

"She deserves to figure that out herself, Master. Even if Elena’s right. Even if you already know. Yuki needs to choose. Not because the choice matters. Because the choosing does."

He lay back down. Elena curled against him. Her head on his chest. Her breath evening out. Persephone padded across the floor and jumped onto the bed with the particular contempt of a cat who’d been woken up and considered this a personal attack.

One week.

Seven days of Yuki sleeping beside Kenji. Cooking for him. Sitting at the kitchen table where he’d sat with his shoes on. Trying. Not for the marriage. For the closure. For the certainty that came from knowing you’d given it everything and everything still wasn’t enough.

*One week. Seven days. Yuki in a house that’s already stopped being hers. Kenji trying. The kitchen table where everything cracked. And Lucas, waiting, the way you wait for a woman who’s learning to walk on legs she didn’t know she had.*

*Don’t text her. Don’t push. Don’t be the thing that pulls her away before she’s ready to leave on her own.*

*Let her choose.*

*Even if the choice is already made.*

---

May 15th. Lucas’s Apartment. 3:47 PM.

Seven days.

Lucas hadn’t texted Yuki. Not once. Elena had monitored her emotional state through Aurora’s digital perception, the entity reading Yuki’s text patterns and communication rhythms with the quiet diligence of a nurse checking vitals. Aurora reported daily. Yuki’s texts to Marcus were warm. Her texts to Elena were functional. Her texts to Kenji were careful and kind and exhausted.

No texts to Lucas. Not because she was ignoring him. Because she was doing the thing she’d never done. Being alone with herself.

On day five, Aurora delivered her assessment.

"Yuki’s emotional state is complex. Layered. Unresolved. She attended one counseling session with Kenji. She cooked for him four times. She slept beside him every night. She cried in the shower on day three. She stared at her phone on day four for eleven minutes without picking it up."

"She wanted to text me."

"She wanted to text you. She didn’t. That’s the point. She’s learning what alone feels like when it’s a choice and not a sentence."

*Eleven minutes. She stared at her phone for eleven minutes and didn’t text me. Yuki Tanaka, who texts me mochi photos and Japanese phrases I don’t understand and emoji combinations that shouldn’t make sense but do because she’s Yuki, stared at her phone for eleven minutes and chose not to reach out. That’s either the bravest thing she’s ever done or the saddest. Probably both.*
