My Milf Conqueror System

Chapter 272: The withdrawal

The municipal pressure vanished overnight.

It didn’t happen with a formal announcement or a signed treaty. It happened in the quiet, bureaucratic margins of the city. The sudden tax audits scheduled for the Jade Palace were indefinitely postponed due to "scheduling conflicts." The zoning inspectors who had been harassing Mei-Ling’s commercial properties were reassigned to the northern districts. Superintendent Cho reported that the Mayor’s office had completely dropped their inquiry into her division’s evidence logs.

I sat in the Golden Koi penthouse, watching the morning traffic on the Cotai Strip. The glass was warm from the sun. Outside, cars moved in slow lines. The light reflected off the buildings and made the room bright. The AC hummed low. Cool air moved across the back of my neck.

"Marcus Lin delivered," Li said, walking into the living room with a tablet in her hand. She wore a tailored crimson blouse, her posture relaxed for the first time in days. "My floor managers are reporting that the police patrols in the Outer Harbour have returned to their normal, predictable routes. The harassment has stopped."

"He didn’t have a choice," I replied, turning away from the window. "He was staring down the barrel of a federal indictment. He used his influence within the Song Dynasty Trust to convince the Mayor’s office that aggressive municipal action in the lower districts was destabilizing the local economy and threatening their new developments."

"And the Empress believed him?" Li asked, sitting at the marble table. The tablet made a soft sound as she set it down.

"The Empress doesn’t believe anyone," I corrected, sitting across from her. The marble was cool under my forearms. "She accepted the economic rationale because it made financial sense on paper. But she knows that the pressure stopped exactly when the Golden Koi needed it to stop. She’ll start looking for the variable that changed."

"She will look at Marcus," Li realized.

"She’ll audit him," I agreed. "She’ll tear his life apart looking for the leverage that was used against him. And when she does, she’s going to find the two hundred million dollar private equity injection from a Singaporean tech billionaire named Julian Croft."

Li’s eyes widened slightly. "You wanted her to find the connection."

"I need her to look at Julian Croft," I explained, leaning forward. "Right now, she thinks Noah Reed is a blunt instrument. A highly effective, tactical ghost who solves problems with violence and intimidation. She doesn’t respect Noah Reed. She views him as a dog on a leash."

I tapped the tablet on the table. The sound was dull against the stone.

"But Julian Croft is a peer," I continued. "He operates in her world. He uses capital and corporate leverage to manipulate the board. If I want to force the Empress into a corner, I have to do it from the top down, not the bottom up."

"It is incredibly dangerous, Noah," Li warned, her voice dropping to a whisper. "If she connects the two identities... if she realizes that the street enforcer and the billionaire investor are the same man, she will execute you."

The room was quiet. Only the hum of the AC and the distant traffic below. Light came through the windows and made hard shadows on the floor.

"She won’t connect them," I said, my voice projecting absolute certainty. "The psychological firewall between the two personas is flawless. But we need to reinforce the digital firewall."

I tapped my earpiece. "Overwatch, status on the Croft backstop."

"We’re solidifying the digital footprint now," Nia’s voice came through. "I’ve backdated Julian Croft’s corporate filings in Singapore by five years. I’ve generated a massive portfolio of legitimate tech investments, philanthropic donations, and high-society press clippings. If the Imperial Shadows dig into Croft’s background, they’ll find a mountain of boring, verifiable corporate data."

"What about the physical footprint?" I asked.

"I’ve leased a penthouse suite at the Wynn Macau under Croft’s holding company," Claire reported. "It’s fully staffed with private security contractors who think they’re working for a reclusive billionaire. We’ve also secured a private jet on standby at the international airport."

"Good," I said. "Because Marcus Lin just sent me an invitation. The Empress wants to meet the man who bailed out her portfolio manager."

Li was quiet for a moment. She looked down at the tablet, then back up at me. The fabric of her blouse made a soft sound when she shifted.

"The municipal pressure is gone," Li said. "The audits. The inspections. The police presence. It’s all back to baseline."

"It’s back to how it was before Song Mei tried to use the government against us," I said.

Outside, a siren rose and fell and then faded. The sun was high. It made the glass of the windows hot to the touch.

"The Golden Koi can operate again," Li said. "Without interference."

"For now," I said.

I stood up and walked to the panoramic windows. The city stretched out below. The Cotai Strip. The water. The heat made the air shimmer over the concrete.

"She’ll respond to this," I said. "She lost a move. She won’t like that."

"She will come at us from another angle," Li said.

"Let her," I said. "Next time it won’t be the municipal government. It’ll be something else."

The marble table was clean. No papers. No files. Only the tablet. The screen had gone dark.

Li picked it up and woke it with her thumb. Green and white charts filled the screen.

"Collections are normal," she said. "No disruptions. No delays."

"Because the shield is back," I said.

The AC cycled. The air got colder for a second, then leveled out.

"Julian Croft is now on her radar," Li said quietly.

"That’s the point," I said. "She needs to stop looking for Noah Reed in the shadows and start looking for Julian Croft in the boardrooms."

"And if she figures out they’re the same?"

"Then we’ll already be three moves ahead," I said.

The room was still. The light moved slowly across the floor.

The pressure was gone. The city was quiet.

And the next move was hers.
