Nabil had six minutes before blood loss took the choice from him.

Iseul gave the estimate without rounding up. Pressure slowed the wound, but the missing relation under his foot kept opening a new edge whenever he shifted.

The manual ladder route to the lower excavation landing took six minutes and forty seconds for an uninjured climber.

Kestrel looked at the drilling platform.

Its winch could lower two people and the Sovereign medical case in thirty-eight seconds.

"Powered cable makes one path from motor to platform," Elara said from Mercy. "Grass takes relations. The motor will keep declaring both ends connected after they are not."

"Can Caleb’s frame break the path?" Kestrel asked.

Kikaru checked the five sections.

"It can carry weight at a midpoint. It cannot make the winch forget its own cable."

"Manual descent misses Iseul’s window."

Nobody disputed the arithmetic.

Kestrel called Mazen Taha over from the rescue truck.

Mazen had worked station collapses for twenty-seven years. He kept his bolt cutters wrapped in striped cloth because a smoke crew once took them for live electrical jaws and left three trapped passengers behind a gate.

He had taught Nabil to tie tools after the third pump-water wrench.

"Platform," Kestrel said. "Thirty-eight seconds down. Unknown shaft relation. Manual climb cannot reach the blood window."

Mazen checked the winch brake, cable drum, and emergency shear.

"Who owns stop?"

"Surface brake crew. You own the platform lever. I own the cut below."

"If heights split?"

"Nobody steps across until both sides measure."

Mazen looked at Nabil through the pit.

"He will try to help."

"Then tell him not to."

Mazen leaned over the fence.

"Nabil. You touch this platform before I ask, I will come back and throw all four of your wrenches into pump water."

Nabil pressed the rag harder against his foot.

"Only three were mine."

"The fourth will be a gift."

Tali entered two names under the winch decision.

Kestrel. Mazen Taha.

She added Nabil under the existing route and wrote `MANUAL ALTERNATIVE EXCEEDS CURRENT BLOOD WINDOW BY FORTY SECONDS`.

"Who accepts?" she asked.

"I accept descent and local cut," Kestrel said.

"I accept platform lever and no step," Mazen said.

The surface brake crew accepted motor stop. They did not accept anything below the drum.

Elara lifted her left hand into frame.

"My warning remains. It is not command."

Kestrel answered, "Warning received. Decision mine."

She and Mazen stepped onto the platform.

The medical case sat between them with its red arrow removed. Mazen tied it to two floor points, then cut the center carry handle so no single strap could pull both sides.

The winch started.

Cable unrolled through the upper guide. The platform passed bare foundation blocks, clay, an old drain pipe, and the concrete lip of a landing that had not existed seven minutes earlier.

Nabil watched them descend toward his level.

Kestrel read the depth marks aloud.

"Four meters. Six. Eight."

Mazen compared each mark with a weighted string hanging from the platform rail.

At nine meters, the string tilted upward.

"Stop motor."

The brake crew stopped.

The platform kept descending.

The cable drum did not turn.

Black blades pushed through the greased steel cable above Kestrel. Each blade grew downward and upward at once.

The platform depth mark read ten meters.

Nabil saw them level with his door at fourteen.

Asa saw the bottom of the platform hanging over Post Eight’s west trench seventy-two years earlier.

Three heights claimed one cable.

"No step," Kestrel said.

Mazen had not moved.

The lower landing moved under him.

Concrete slid through the platform rail and appeared beneath his left boot. His boot gained weight. His right remained on steel.

"Landing has me," he said.

Kestrel grabbed the back of his safety belt without pulling.

"Current pain?"

"None. Left boot relation changed."

The winch motor engaged above them without power.

Cable snapped tight.

The platform rose toward the drum. The lower landing stayed level with Nabil’s room.

Mazen’s left leg remained on the landing.

His body separated across the pelvis before either of them could release a buckle.

The upper half struck the platform. Both legs stayed standing for one second below, held by trousers and safety webbing that no longer crossed the missing height.

Then they fell beside Nabil’s door.

Mazen made one sound through his teeth.

Kestrel pressed both hands below his abdomen. There was no continuous wound surface. Her palms met a flat red boundary where his body stopped.

The medical case opened.

She packed gauze against an edge that had no depth. Blood crossed the gauze and appeared around Mazen’s legs below.

Iseul saw the feeds.

"We cannot clamp vessels that do not share a side."

The surface crew tried the manual brake.

Every pull lifted Mazen’s upper body and left his legs below. Releasing it dropped the platform and pulled his legs toward Post Eight.

Recovering one half moved the other farther away.

Black Grass climbed past the shaft guide toward the surface.

The red destination mark glowed across the route body’s chest. If the grass reached the medical frame residue, the owned corridor could carry the missing shaft relation to Sovereign’s hospital.

Mazen found Kestrel’s sleeve.

"Striped cutters."

"The cable is carrying you."

"Cable is carrying the grass."

"Cut drops the platform."

"Cut below black."

Kestrel looked up.

The lowest blade had reached the platform guide. Clean cable remained for less than half a meter.

"Mazen, both halves stay below if I cut."

"Both are mine. Cut."

Tali heard him.

"Current order recorded under Mazen Taha."

Kestrel unwrapped the striped bolt cutters.

Mazen put one hand over hers because the platform shook too hard for the jaws to settle. He did not guide the cut after they touched steel.

"Now yours," he said.

Kestrel closed the handles.

The cable parted.

Its upper end snapped into the black growth. Blades followed it toward the motor, reached the cut, and folded back into the shaft.

The drilling platform fell.

It dropped three meters and struck two unfinished landing beams. One beam broke. The other drove through the platform floor beside the medical case and held.

Mazen lost his grip on Kestrel.

His upper body remained on the platform. His legs lay on a landing level with Nabil. Neither moved again.

The route body’s hospital mark went dark.

Tali opened Mazen’s record before anyone called the shaft event complete.

"Descent authorization?"

Kestrel kept one hand against Mazen’s neck.

"Mine, after Elara’s warning."

"Platform acceptance?"

"Mazen’s. No step. The landing moved under him."

"Final cable cut?"

"Requested by Mazen. Executed by me."

The chamber clerk tried to enter `BLACK GRASS CASUALTY` as the command source.

Tali rejected the field.

"Grass created the harm. It did not authorize the winch. Keep both."

Kestrel removed the striped cloth from Mazen’s cutters and tied it around the medical-case handle. She left the cutters beside his hand. They had completed the local action he named. They were not salvage yet.

Nabil could see Mazen’s legs near his door.

"He said no step," Nabil whispered.

"He did not step," Kestrel answered. "The record has that."

"A record is not him."

"No."

She did not offer more through the missing distance.

Mazen’s left boot radio kept transmitting station weather from the landing beside Nabil, clear and useless.

Above, the surface crew pulled the manual ladder toward the shaft.

Black blades covered every rung below the fifth.

Kestrel checked Mazen’s neck, then wrote the time on the medical-case lid.

She looked across the missing six meters at Nabil.

The good gauze was now on her platform. His bleeding foot remained on the other side.

The platform had stopped below the reachable ladder and above the unfinished landing.

Kestrel was closer to Nabil than anyone else.

There was no route between them.
