Chapter 360: Fracture Point

Istra led him along a back lane between the upper canal warehouses and into an old counting house still scented with ink and wet rope.

Two of her own people were already inside, one covering the rear door, the other tucking small sealed tags into a case. They did not bow. They studied Lucian with all the interest of men who had decided he was the cause of all this trouble and moved on.

"We leave before fourth bell," Istra said. "Once we’re out of Keth-Arel, the city hold does not matter as much. The houses find it harder to grab you. Harder does not mean impossible, so we do not stand around."

Lucian paused by the table where they’d set cases and inspected the room. ’Who would try to stop us here?"

"Tonight? Anyone who thinks you are worth the fine." Istra pulled on a darker glove. "The delegates like their paper and process. The houses favor speed. If either sees you walking with me, speed wins."

Cael’s voice pressed into Lucian’s mind, thin and edged. ’She speaks the truth about the race. She is not telling you who gets you on the other side.’

’I know," Lucian muttered.

The front latch clicked.

Istra’s guard shifted his hand, then halted as a woman slipped past him with both palms out and open. Black hair, simple coat, eyes that took in the room and weighed its occupants before she was settled. Sera.

Lucian recognized her from the first day in the city when she’d pointed the way to food and lodging. She glanced from Istra to Lucian and exhaled sharply.

"You are an idiot."

Istra’s voice sharpened. ’Name."

"Sera. I am Free. I carry messages when people pay and disappear when they do not." She inclined her head at Lucian. "I helped this one when he still looked like he might last a week. Now half the lower market is saying civic pulled him, the houses started pricing him and some outside handler walked him off the canal path. Talk like that gets bystanders hauled in for questions."

Lucian frowned. "So you followed me to stay safe?"

"I followed you because Derrin’s people tried to sell my name next to yours." Sera said. "Apparently anyone who spoke to the quiet Free is now useful. I would rather pick which mess I stand in."

Istra studied her. "You are not coming because you like him."

"I am coming because getting out from under the city with your help beats waiting for Veyrn to collect leftovers." Sera said. "I can find work on another plane. I cannot do that from a locked cellar."

One of Istra’s guards looked to her for permission. Istra remained on Sera. "You become one more body to move."

"That costs more."

"Take it out of his value." Sera said. "Everyone in this room knows he is the reason you opened this path at all."

Lucian almost smiled at her bluntness. "She leaves with us."

Istra turned her head slightly. "You do not give orders here."

"I am not giving an order." Lucian said. "I am telling you the condition under which I keep walking. She got marked because she talked to me on day one. I will not leave her here for that."

The silence stretched after that, the clatter of a cart passing outside and fading. Finally Istra flicked two fingers at her guard.

"She comes. If she slows us down, I cut her loose myself."I do not slow," Sera said

They went.

The passage under the counting house was marked with old seals. The air grew colder as they descended, thinner, as though the city above was already releasing them. Istra went first, Lucian after her and Sera close enough that her sleeve brushed the wall. The guards secured the stone panel behind them.

That is when the pressure came.

First the sensation, then the white lines of force cutting through the stone and attempting to close the passage like a snare. One of Istra’s men swore and shoved Sera aside as a second sealing imprint caught over the exit ramp.

A calm official voice echoed down the stair.

"By joint Authority and civic review, the Free called Lucian is under extended hold. Step away from the passage."

Soren. Not Veyth. The adjutant had come armed after all.

Istra went expressionless. "Too fast."

Boots echoed up the stair, a mixture of watch coats and cleaner gray uniforms among them. A Veyrn runner was there, as well which meant the houses had stopped waiting for permission.

Sera’s hand caught his sleeve. ’Tell me you have more than yard strength under that coat."

Lucian looked up the stair, and at the sealing light crawling toward their feet. The quiet cover was at an end. The city had finally taken its hands to the door.

’Stay behind me." he said.

Soren raised a sealed baton, light already gathering at the tip. "Do not make this worse. Walk back up, we process you cleanly and the woman is released after a statement."

Istra laughed, without humor. "Process. What a soft word for ownership."

"She is not part of this." Lucian said.

"She became part of it when she entered a restricted passage with a candidate under review." Soren replied. "Last chance."

Lucian advanced.

He kept his power close but did not open it. He did not need that much for a stair full of officials in a lower plane passage. He tore the net of force away with a short, hard burst of power and sent the severed light back up the steps. The kick sent two Watch officers into the wall and forced Soren to steady himself against the rail.

For half a heartbeat, no one moved.

Then every man and woman on that stair was measuring the yard Free with new eyes. The yard Free who was not a yard Free at all.

’Bind him!" Soren shouted.

Istra moved at once. ’Go!"

Her remaining guard struck the lower gate and forced it open. Sera grabbed the case of tags without asking and ran. Lucian lingered long enough to break the second binding cast from Soren’s baton. The force of it numbed the adjutant’s hands, and cracked the weapon against the stone.

A Veyrn runner tried to reach the gap. Lucian hit him once, cleanly, and put him down. That was a choice. Dead men would only make it harder for Reed Street and those who had sold him food.

’Lucian!" Sera shouted from below

He turned and followed.

The pressure of the passage drew them out, the cold air, the sound of Sera’s muttered imprecations at his side, the weight of Keth-Arel’s stair and seals and voices all falling away at once.

They emerged onto black stone beneath a sky thick with more fixed lights than he’d ever seen.

The air was cleaner here, heavier, different.

Istra reeled once, then caught herself and counted heads. Two of hers, Lucian, Sera. The emergency escape had not failed them.

Sera knelt with her hands on her knees, looking back at the vanished passage. "That was not a clarification meeting."

"No." Lucian said.

Istra’s gaze was on him, all courtesy gone. ’You just broke Authority binding work in front of witnesses. The story of a quiet Free is dead. From this point they will not hunt a laborer. They will hunt a breach."

Cael’s presence settled heavily behind Lucian’s thoughts. ’She is right. You are past hiding."

Sera rose, wiped dust from her mouth. "Good. Then nobody can pretend this is still about dock lists." She looked at Lucian, shaken and sharp in the same breath. ’Next time you become the center of a Lord hunt, warn the first person who gave you directions."

"I did not know you would follow." Lucian said.

"I did not know you could crack official seals like dry wood." She countered. "We are even in surprise. We are not even in danger."

Istra pointed to a line of pale towers beyond the black plain. ’Move. This place is not a sanctuary. Word will climb faster than we walk if we give it time."

Lucian took one final look at the sealed air behind them, where Keth-Arel was no longer.

Then he went forward with Istra and Sera into the mid-plane dark, the lower city cover broken at last, and the real hunt no longer pretending to be paperwork.
