Chapter 338: Inheritance

Lucian did not hesitate at the next threat.

The second the local Outer God pressure finished withdrawing from the rise, Lucian turned his focus out and along the trail.

Infinity, once opened, did not take kindly to half-measures. He could feel the remaining manifestations and deeper anchors spread through the wider field like knots in a net, every one still tied to the force that had tried to grind Team Zero into the stone. Cael’s hologram flickered at the edge of his vision.

"Lucian-"

"I know."

He moved.

There was no dramatic flight path for the others to follow, no charge across the sky. Lucian simply crossed distance as a solved problem. The first Outer God node he reached tried to expand into a defensive continuum. He erased it. Absolute denial, infinite force, no struggle long enough to become a fight. The second and third went the same way, incomplete forms collapsing into nothing under a power that had stopped seeing them as valid opposition.

Behind him on the ruined rise, Team Zero felt the distant shocks of those endings like thunder without weather.

Marc forced himself upright, staring out. "He’s not stabilizing the field. He’s hunting."

Evelyn’s face was tight. "Of course he is."

Lucy kept Althea’s sealed pocket tether steady through Lucian’s movement, jaw clenched. Silas wiped blood from his mouth and let out a low, incredulous breath. Reia’s eyes unfocused as she tried to follow the telepathic wake of what Lucian was doing and found only vanishing points. Vyn whispered, "The laws are breaking clean..."

Cael’s hologram hung near them, thinner. "He drew attention. Now he’s answering it the hard way."

Lucian continued.

Wherever Outer God presence still clung to the region, anchors, partial bodies, pressure mouths on the scars Lucian had ground through, he ended them. Not as a man fighting a war. As infinity removing obstacles. Some tried to adapt, to shed continuity and reform outside his reach. He expanded the reach. Some tried to scream authority into the local structure of existence. He denied the authority. One of the larger ones managed to wound the space around him deeply enough that blood ran from his nose under the backlash. He ignored it and finished the job.

By the time the last local Outer God presence collapsed, the wider field felt hollowed and raw.

Lucian did not return to the rise.

He felt the deeper line behind them, the direction Lirael’s borrowed authority had always pointed towards, the place the false council had spoken from, the so-called Aethel world. With the Outer Gods in the area gone, the path no longer defended in any way Lucian cared.

He went.

The transition was ugly. Layers of old law and broken containment peeled past him as he forced entry into a realm not prepared to receive unbound infinity. For a moment the world on the other side resisted like a locked room. Then the lock failed.

Lucian stepped into the Aethel world and found it already destroyed.

No pristine white halls or clean council spaces. No pale architecture humming with borrowed order. Before him stretched ruin, collapsed structures half-swallowed by dead light, broken platforms floating over an empty depth, residual authority bleeding out of cracks like smoke from a finished fire. The air tasted of ended commands and spent power.

At the center of it, where some throne or nexus had clearly once stood, Alistair waited.

He looked different.

Not younger, not cleaner, stronger. The old complicated weight of him remained, but it sat inside a frame of real power that had not been present in the keep or the white hall of chains. Authority clung to him now, real, heavy, reclaimed rather than begged. The ruins around him did not press on him, they orbited him in a loose, broken deference.

Lucian paused at a distance, infinity still fully open, the last echoes of dead Outer Gods fading behind his path.

Alistair glanced sideways at him, almost casual.

"Relax." he said. "I’m not going to become evil again. Just reclaimed my inheritance."

The words landed in the ruined air with no ceremony.

Lucian did not lower his guard. "This place."

"Was already rotting." Alistair surveyed the destruction with a tired contempt. "Those pretenders had been wearing a name they didn’t understand for a long time. Using scraps of old authority. Issuing judgments like clerks with stolen seals. When your power came unbound, their whole scaffolding started failing. I only finished what their own weakness made inevitable."

"And the Outer Gods?"

"They were never partners. Just another set of forces feeding on the same fracture." Alistair’s mouth tilted. "You killing them saved me some work. Try not to let that go to your head."

Lucian studied him. The strength was real. The inheritance, whatever its original shape, had answered Alistair hard enough to remake the balance of the ruined realm around him. This was not the chained man with a sharp mouth in a white hall, this was someone who had taken back a seat the counterfeits had been warming.

"You were missing." Lucian said.

"I was busy." Alistair flexed one hand, and residual authority curled around his fingers before settling. "They thought they could use me as leverage. That only works if the leverage doesn’t remember where the original keys were kept."

"And now?"

"Now the false Aethel is gone. The name can stop being an insult." Alistair finally looked at him full-on. "You stopped holding back. About time. Though from the state of the outer fields, you didn’t do it quietly."

Lucian’s voice remained flat. "They attacked my people."

"I know." A pause. "Evelyn still want me dead?"

"She hasn’t decided if she wants me dead either, at the moment."

Alistair made a low sound that might have been a laugh. "Family."

Silence stretched between them in the destroyed center of the realm. Far below the broken platforms, something old and empty moved once and then went still, like a house settling after a storm.

Lucian did not dismiss infinity. Not yet. "If this inheritance turns you back into what you were-"

"It won’t." Alistair’s answer was immediate, stripped of joke. "I already know what that version costs. I paid it. We all paid it. Reclaiming power is not the same as reclaiming the sickness that used it."

Lucian held his gaze for a long moment, then gave a single nod.

In the distance, through the ruined layers of the realm, he could still feel the rise where Team Zero waited- the wounded, the angry, the loyal, the sealed pocket of kids and Althea, Cael’s thin hologram, Evelyn’s unresolved fire. The battle there was over, the consequences not.

Alistair turned slightly, surveying the dead world he now stood at the center of.

"Go get your people," he said. "I’ll hold what’s left of this place together long enough to make sure nothing worse crawls up through the cracks. When you’re ready to talk properly- about the inheritance, about the pretenders, about what your infinity just announced to every watching eye- I’ll be here."

Lucian took one last look at him.

Stronger, clear-eyed, not asking for trust so much as stating a new fact.

Then Lucian turned and left the destroyed Aethel world behind, infinity still open around him, to head back towards the rise where the people he had chosen still stood waiting for the man who had finally stopped pretending to be smaller than he was.
