Chapter 334: Breaking Point
Lucian’s fist met Lirael’s guard and the crest split open beneath them.
Stone shot outwards, pale light and sheer force tearing deeper grooves into the rise as the two of them fought another exchange without pause, around them the battle having ceased to be a line fight and become a collision of powers that no longer fitted the land beneath it.
Team Zero had been stronger than they’d been the last time the world had tried to bury them.
Lucy’s hellflame burned with cosmic weight now, black-edged pillars and sheets of flame that left whole knots of specialists dead and the stone beneath them glassy and dead. Vyn’s magic control had deepened into something sharper and more absolute, hostile formulas breaking apart in her hands, local law bending until Outer God pressure had to work harder to be coherent around her. Reia’s telepathy cut through enemy coordination at a level that had left specialists stunned mid-command and constructs hesitating under false imperatives. Marc held geometry like a weapon, folding space with brutal confidence. Silas took hits that should’ve killed him and converted them into more violence.
They had grown.
It still wasn’t enough.
The Outer Gods entered the fight properly.
Not with distant pressure alone but lesser forms and incomplete manifestations forcing their way up the slope in waves of rewriting flesh and broken physics; bodies that shed damage by redefining what damage was. One of them hit a left flank and sent Silas tumbling backwards hard enough to carve a furrow through the stone. Another pushed against Lucy’s fire and kept coming as hellflame peeled layers from its form. A third pressed against Vyn’s working and tried to unmake the rules she was holding in place.
The rise shuddered under the combined weight of Lirael’s remaining forces and the Outer Gods’ direct attention.
Evelyn cut a specialist down and immediately had to turn into a manifestation that built new limbs as fast as she destroyed the old ones and fought on, locked jaw and absolute focus, still refusing to lean on Lucian for more aside from the fight’s unavoidable geometry. Blood had marked her side, but she still stood upright.
Marc crushed one of the lesser Outer God forms between two collapsed lanes of space, his teeth bared, blood running freely from his nose. "They’re committing!"
"I know," Lucian said.
He knew because the center had become heavier than anything else on the field; Lirael fought like she knew the Outer Gods’ presence had changed the equation and her containment/erasure work synced with their reality-warping pressure in ugly, effective ways. Every time he drove her back, one of the larger pressures filled the gap. Every time he broke a construct line, something older and less physical pushed through it.
Team Zero met the surge with everything they’d built themselves into.
Lucy roared and laid down a wall of hellflame that cut a manifestation in half and kept burning both. Vyn forced a pocket of stable law through the chaos long enough for Reia to flood three enemy command links with total confusion. Silas absorbed a blow that cracked the air, then staggered and smashed through the thing that had hit him with a fury that almost seemed personal. Marc kept the crest from folding beneath them by sheer refusal to let the geometry fail.
Lucian stayed the most terrifying point in the storm.
He moved through Outer God pressure that should’ve slowed him to nothing and made it look like the pressure had been the thing that’d miscalculated. Specialists died when they entered his range. Manifestations lost coherence when he put his hands on them. Lirael met him over and over and still couldn’t wrest the center into her own.
And still the combined force kept climbing.
An Outer God form larger than the others pushed up through the lower slope, its body a mass of incomplete faces and shifting density. Lucy laid hellflame onto it, Vyn stripped layers of its local authority, Marc tried to crush the space it took up. It continued forward anyway, shedding damage like old skin until Lucian intercepted it directly and drove it back by main force. The impact sent shock through the whole rise.
They were holding.
They were also being buried by inches.
Silas went down to one knee after a linked hit from a construct and a manifestation, but forced himself up again through sheer stubbornness. Reia’s nose bled from the telepathic strain. Vyn’s arms trembled. Lucy’s fire still answered, but her breathing had gone harsh and ragged. Evelyn took a glancing erasure graze across the ribs and kept fighting with her teeth clenched against the pain.
Marc cut through the roar, his voice raw and urgent.
"Lucian!"
Lucian broke Lirael’s latest containment layer and turned his head just enough to show he was listening.
Marc slammed another manifestation back from the right crest, blood spraying from his split lip. "Stop holding back!" ℯℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮
The words landed heavier than most of the blows on the field.
Around them the Outer Gods pressed harder, as if sensing the edge of something. Lirael’s eyes narrowed through the pale light bleeding off her form. Evelyn’s attention flicked towards Lucian for the first time in the fight that wasn’t entirely about the next enemy, then cut away.
Lucian drove a manifestation down into the stone and held it there while Lucy burned it apart.
"I can’t."
Marc stared at him across the chaos, disbelief and fury tangled. "What do you mean you can’t? They’re overwhelming us. You’ve got more. I know you’ve got more. Use it!"
Lucian met Lirael’s next strike, turned it, answered with enough to crack her guard and still didn’t reach for whatever sat sealed deeper under his power. The Outer God pressure bore down across the rise, another wave of lesser forms climbing through the smoke and broken fire.
"I can’t."
This time the words carried no room for argument.
Not won’t.
Can’t.
The battle raged around that one refusal as Team Zero held their ground through blood and fire and bent space, stronger than ever before and staring directly into a combined force that didn’t care how far they’d come.
Lirael pressed in again, the Outer Gods with her.
Lucian stood at the center of it, terrifying and incomplete, and didn’t unleash what Marc had asked for.
The rise continued to shake under them.
The fight didn’t pause to let the meaning of his answer settle.
It only kept coming.
