“Huh?” Zhao Yun furrowed his brows. Were they exposed? Zhao Yun’s hand was already on his sword and his men were also wary.

“Without the token, you have to pay! Only after paying can you enter the city!” Zhang Lei shouted to Zhao Yun and the others.

“Pay?” Zhao Yun and the others were stunned.

“Our captain said that all caravans entering the city need to have that token. Those without must pay a toll. If you do not pay the toll fee or have the token, I would have no choice but to ask you to leave.”

“A toll?” Zhao Yun sighed with relief. He had already been influenced by his Lord, the King of Shu, Liu Mang who believed that anything that could be solved with money is not a problem. “Bring the money here. Pay this man the toll!” Zhao Yun immediately ordered.

“How much do you want?” Zhao Yun asked Zhang Lei.

“This amount.” Zhang Lei said as he raised five fingers.

“Five thousand coins?” Zhao Yun asked.

Zhang Lei immediately coughed. “No! No! Five hundred coins!” There were only a dozen people and they only had a small bag of stuff. Because of this, Zhang Lei was not ruthless and let them through with only five hundred coins.

“Okay. Five hundred coins then!” Five hundred coins was not much. If it was to buy Nanpi City or even obtain Cao Cao’s head, even five million coins would be worth it.

Zhao Yun thought he could get through without a problem. Unfortunately, there was indeed a problem. They have no money.

After waiting for a long time, Zhao Yun turned around to see his men completely bewildered. They were currently on expedition. Who would bring money with them? This is ancient times. Their money are coins which is heavier than paper.

They were the White Horses and they were equipped lightly for better speed. How could they possibly carry coins? They didn’t even carry a few more arrows.

These dozen soldiers all stared at each other blankly. Finally, one of them foolishly pulled out a few copper coins from his pocket.

“Get lost! Get lost now!” Zhang Lei’s face turned dark. He was about to have them arrested.

“Ah. It would seem there is no other way.” Zhao Yun laughed bitterly. They almost slipped past the guards but things ended up turning out differently. If Cao Cao learned that Nanpi was spared from disaster because of a mere five hundred coins, he may just laugh himself to death.

“We are not leaving!” Zhao Yun said as he pulled out his sword and charge straight at Zhang Lei.

“What!” Zhang Lei froze in disbelief. These merchants just drew their weapons and attacked? “Men! Capture them!” Zhang Lei roared in anger. This was Nanpi City. There is a massive army stationed here, yet a small merchant caravan dared to attack? They were simply courting death!

But the moment Zhang Lei shouted, he realized that something was wrong. He was alone and his men were already dead. The merchant seemed to be laughing at him. Zhang Lei laughed back nervously.

Just as one of Zhao Yun’s men was about to attack Zhang Lei, Zhao Yun stopped him. “Don’t waste time on him. We’ve got more important matters to do!”

“Understood!” The White Horses nodded and spared Zhang Lei.

Zhao Yun quickly ran past Zhang Lei. He gazed at the walls ahead of him. It was a short distance but the success of taking Nanpi depended on this very moment.

“Kill!” Zhao Yun roared. He and his men charged towards the city gates.

“Enemy attack!” Someone from inside the city shouted as the soldiers rushed to close the city gates.

“We cannot let them close the gates!” Zhao Yun shouted to his men. If Nanpi City closed their gates then there would be no hope. Fortunately, there were a lot of merchant caravans around so the gate could not close for a while.

Seeing that the gates cannot close, the gate captain quickly dispatched soldiers to stop Zhao Yun and his men. Zhao Yun killed two soldiers with his sword and stole a spear. He was more comfortable with a spear. The moment he grabbed hold on one, the dozens of soldiers charging at him were instantly crushed.

An large empty space formed around Zhao Yun and the White Horses quickly followed after him.

“Stop them! We cannot let them enter the city!” The gate captain shouted. He did not understand what was happening. He only left his post for a brief moment. Where was Zhang Lei? For a moment, the captain was angered by Zhang Lei’s supposed neglect of duty. But then he saw Zhao Yun mowing through his men like wheat and his anger subsided. Zhang Lei was most likely killed by this God of War.

“Where are the others?” The captain shouted. He commanded an army of one thousand men. Zhao Yun only have a few dozen men with him. This would not be a problem with these difference in numbers. But soon one of his men reported to him the truth. Most of his men were slacking off inside the city. After all, they had already won so now was the time to have fun. Only a few hundred men were actually at their posts and all of them were yawning away. It is no wonder Zhao Yun broke through so easily.

“Damn it! Find them! Bring them here!” The captain shouted but nobody moved. They don’t know where to go nor do they have the time to go looking for people.

“General! How about we request for reinforcements?” They have not sent signal smokes yet.

“Request for reinforcements?” The gate captain’s eyes widened. He did not dare to do so. If he did, the lax defenses and the toll collection would be exposed. There were many unwritten rules. These rules could be broken but had to remain hidden. They would be finished the moment it is exposed.

“No! Stop them! Stop them with your life! Everything will be fine as long as the gates are shut!” The captain insisted.

Unable to persuade their captain, the other guards sighed and picked up their weapons to join the fight below.

Zhao Yun fought his way closer to the city walls and then smiled. “Send the signal! Have the others move!” At this distance, the gate could no longer close. Zhao Yun cut down the last defender with a single stroke.

“It’s over…” The captain slumped to the ground. The enemy has taken control of the gates. The gate captain was not stupid. If the enemy were to launch a surprise attack here, they would not come in small numbers. Sure enough, a cavalry appeared carrying banners and charging towards Nanpi City.

“Damn it!” The gate captain knew he was doomed. The only question was whether he gets killed by the enemy or gets killed by Cao Cao. But before he dies, he had to see for himself who was responsible for this. He took a look at the enemy’s banners.

“Liaodong Iron Cavalry?” The gate captain’s eyes widened. Impossible! Didn’t they surrender? Why would they attack our city?

“Those Liaodong dogs!” The gate captain shouted as an idea struck him. If these people were allies then the blame would not be his. Responsibility would belong to those officials in charge of Liaodong’s affairs such as He Ping,
