Chapter 88: Chapter 88| Third Slot

The training session ended at 7:20 AM.

Maren picked up her bag and headed back toward the dormitory to prep for the day. Zane watched her go then turned back to the wall for the last ten reps.

Solo. Just him and the wall and the Monday morning quiet.

He pressed his palm flat.

Impact Breaker at 90%.

The wave rolled through the composite surface. Deeper than anything this wall had absorbed from him before. The material doing more work. The contact point compression sitting at a level that made him think about what 100% would feel like and what happened when output exceeded the ceiling.

’C-rank to B-rank,’ he thought. ’If I push past 100% and the tier upgrades permanently.’

He stepped back.

’But 90% is the current ceiling,’ he thought. ’I can’t push past what the familiarity tier allows. To exceed 100% I need either Dex familiarity to cross 70% or a Gacha reward that pushes the ceiling further.’

He looked at his palm.

’Or,’ he thought. ’I acquire a B-rank Impact Breaker from someone else and run both.’

He stopped walking.

Thought about that for exactly three seconds.

’That’s the most useless idea I’ve come up with since arriving at this academy,’ he thought. ’Running two Impact Breakers. Same Sigil. Different ceilings. Absolutely zero tactical benefit.’ He looked at the corridor wall. ’What am I even thinking.’

The system surfaced.

『 The system concurs. That idea was not worth the processing time it took to generate. 』

’Thank you for the validation,’ Zane thought.

『 The system is always honest. 』

He filed that under interesting and kept walking.

Walking back toward the dormitory at 7:25 AM his mind went to the third slot.

Empty. Waiting. The first genuinely open acquisition opportunity he’d had since week one.

And for the first time — B-rank eligible.

’Who do I want in that slot,’ he thought.

The system surfaced.

『 B-rank Sigil deciphering now active within aura range. Any B-rank student who enters the 3.4 meter radius will have their Sigil automatically mapped before the acquisition prompt surfaces. You will know what you are acquiring before committing. 』

’So I shop first,’ Zane thought. ’Then decide.’

『 Correct. The system recommends patience over impulse. As previously stated. 』

He thought about the B-rank students he knew.

Ryan Castellan. Pressure Wave.

Wide field displacement. Directional concentration at range. The Sigil he’d watched from the observation rail and clocked every tell for and never had room to carry. Running Pressure Wave would fundamentally change his engagement range — from close contact to mid-range field coverage. A completely different combat architecture.

’Tactically significant,’ he thought. Then paused. ’But I wouldn’t want to steal anything from that jerk. Not yet anyway. File’s still open.’

Nyx Hale. Kinetic Force.

Redirection. Deflection. Force management rather than force generation. The Sigil he’d watched put Cole Brennan on the floor in three minutes by turning his own output against him. Running Kinetic Force alongside Impact Breaker would give him both generation and redirection simultaneously.

’That combination,’ he thought. ’That’s genuinely terrifying on paper.’

’But Kinetic Force,’ he thought. ’It redirects and deflects force. Impact Breaker generates and projects force. The two mechanics are adjacent enough that running both might produce redundant output rather than genuine tactical diversity.’ He looked at the corridor. ’Similar enough to what I’m already running that a whole slot feels like a waste.’

No they’re NOT similar — they’re complementary. Impact Breaker creates force, Kinetic Force manages it. Running both would actually be a strong combination.

Wren Hale. Sigil unknown.

B-rank. Broad shouldered. Physical output adjacent build. He’d watched her in the drill — strong, direct, the kind of output that covered ground rather than precision striking. But he didn’t know the specific Sigil and the system hadn’t deciphered it yet because she hadn’t come within aura range.

’Unknown quantity,’ he thought. ’Pass for now.’

Dario Marsh. Earth Manipulation.

Hardens and softens composite material at will.

’Interesting,’ he thought. ’Terrain control. Environment manipulation. Dario locked Maren’s legs and my torso from across the platform without touching either of us directly. Mid to long range. Completely different engagement profile from anything I’m currently running.’ He paused. ’Actually that’s one of the more versatile options. Control the ground someone is standing on and you control the fight before it starts.’

He filed it higher on the list than he’d initially placed it.

He pushed through the dormitory entrance and took the elevator to the seventh floor.

’Ryan or Nyx,’ he thought. ’Those are the two real options.’

’Ryan for range. Nyx for redirection.’

’But familiarity is the limiting factor on both,’ he thought. ’Ryan... I wouldn’t be able to get close to him naturally. Not like I’d want to either. That file is still open.’ He paused. ’Nyx though —we’ve had more genuine contact than the numbers suggest. The courtyard exchange. Her telling me to make her a priority. She’s been watching me longer than anyone else in this building.’

’Nyx might actually be the smarter play,’ he thought.

He clocked it and continued heading to the dormitory.

He reached room 714 at 7:32 AM.

Dex was already gone, either with his squad or headed for breakfast. The room was empty except for Gerald wheezing at his standard interval from the wall.

Zane sat on his bed.

’The favour Maren just earned,’ he thought suddenly. ’Whatever she asks for that’s an interaction. Genuine. The kind that accumulates.’

He thought about the third slot candidates again.

’Nyx,’ he thought. ’She told me to make her a priority. She’s been watching me longer than anyone else in this building. The courtyard exchange was real. If I follow up on that — genuinely, not strategically, the familiarity would climb naturally.’

’And Kinetic Force running alongside Impact Breaker,’ he thought. ’Force generation and force redirection in the same hands. That’s not redundant. That’s a complete combat system.’

The system surfaced.

『 Nyx Hale — current familiarity: 8% — Stranger tier. Output at current standing: 40%. However the system notes familiarity accumulates faster with genuine reciprocal exchanges. One real conversation moved her from 0% to 8% in a single courtyard exchange. The ceiling is accessible faster than the number suggests. 』
