Chapter 117| Drill Aftermath
Chapter 117: Chapter 117| Drill Aftermath
Arena Two emptied the way it always did after a session that had produced something worth talking about — not quickly, not quietly. Both classes moving toward the exit in the specific mixed energy of students who had been on opposite sides of a drill floor for forty five minutes and were now sharing the same corridor again.
Zane moved through it with his bag over one shoulder.
His hands still felt it. The specific residual sensation of full B-rank output on both Sigils in a live context. Not fatigue exactly, just presence. The kind of feeling that said something real had happened and the body hadn’t fully filed it yet.
Maren walked beside him. Quieter than usual. The post-drill version of her that existed when she’d pushed Overdrive past comfortable and had ended up on the wrong side of the score anyway.
He looked at her briefly.
She looked at the corridor floor.
"You good," he said.
"Fine," she said. The flat version. The one that meant she was processing and didn’t want to be asked again.
He let it go.
The corridor split ahead — 1-A left, 1-B right. Both classes filtering toward their respective blocks. The ambient noise of forty two students doing the post-drill debrief in pairs and small groups as they moved.
Zane was three steps from the split when someone fell into step beside him.
Ryan.
Not from behind. From the side. He’d been moving parallel and had closed the gap deliberately. The white hair. The focused energy. The expression that had been running a significant update since 3:44 PM when full B-rank output had cracked Reid’s frost line from underneath.
He didn’t say anything immediately.
They walked three steps together in silence.
Then... "That combination with Nyx."
Zane looked at him sideways.
"That’s not how a single registered Sigil operates," Ryan said. "Not at that output distribution. Not from two separate contact points."
Zane kept walking.
"Ask me after the assessment," he said.
Ryan held his gaze for one more step.
Something shifted in his expression, not the recalibration this time. Something closer to the specific look of someone who had been running a rivalry and had just found out the other person was considerably more interesting than the rivalry required.
"Next time we’re on opposite sides," he said. "I’m not pulling the output."
He turned left toward 1-A without waiting for a response.
Zane watched him go.
’Not pulling output,’ he thought. ’That’s the most Ryan possible way of saying he’s taking me seriously.’
The system surfaced.
『 System Note: Ryan Castellan has formally upgraded the host’s threat assessment in his internal file. The system considers this a significant development. 』
’I see,’ he thought.
_ _
Zane arrived at Room 714 at exactly 5:30 PM.
Maren had split off at the girls dormitory junction without much ceremony —brief wave, tired eyes, the specific exit energy of someone who needed to be horizontal before she could process anything else.
He’d watched her go and hadn’t said anything about it.
Dex was at his desk when Zane pushed through the door. Laptop open. Torre on Dex’s bed eating something from a container that smelled considerably better than cafeteria standard.
Dex looked up.
Looked at Zane’s face.
"Drill day," he said. Not a question.
"Yeah Drill day," Zane confirmed.
He dropped his bag. Sat on his bed. Looked at the ceiling.
’Full B-rank output,’ he thought. ’In front of both classes. Vael clocked it. Ryan clocked it. Nyx built her theory further. And we still lost 4-2.’
’Three A-ranks,’ he thought. ’That’s what the gap looks like.’
Torre looked up from his container. "You look like someone who ran full output and lost."
"Accurate," Zane said.
"Eat something," Torre said. "Food fixes most things."
Zane looked at him.
Torre was already holding out his communicator. "There’s a delivery service that runs to the dormitory block. Order something. Don’t go to the cafeteria, you look too tired to sit upright in public."
Dex looked at Torre.
"When did you become helpful," Dex said.
"I’m always helpful," Torre said. "You just never notice."
Dex stared at him.
Torre went back to his container.
Zane took the communicator. Scrolled through the delivery options. Ordered something with rice. The specific automatic default that had apparently settled into his ordering habits since Thursday.
Forty minute wait.
He put the communicator down and looked at the ceiling.
His communicator beeped a few minutes after.
He checked it.
One notification. Instructor Mori’s header.
Code Zero suit — dark green — ready for collection. Pickup window: Monday after class. Don’t be late.
He stared at it for a moment.
’Monday,’ he thought. ’Right.’
He put the communicator down and looked at the ceiling again.
’Full B-rank output in a drill today,’ he thought. ’Dark green Code Zero suit Monday.’
’Things are moving,’ he thought.
Gerald wheezed.
Dex clicked something on his laptop.
Torre finished his container and set it down with the satisfied energy of someone who had eaten well and had no further obligations.
"Who’d you lose to," Torre said.
"Team B," Zane said. "Three A-ranks."
Torre nodded. "Sera Dunne on that team?"
Zane looked at him. "Yeah."
"She’s something else," Torre said. Simply. The tone of someone who had encountered A-rank Heat Sense in a drill context before and had filed the experience under permanently educational.
"She is," Zane said.
A pause.
"You held your own though?" Torre said.
Zane looked at the ceiling.
’Full B-rank output,’ he thought. ’Reid’s frost line cracked. Ryan’s concentrated beam redirected doubled. The whole floor watching.’
"Yeah," he said. "I held my own."
Torre nodded. Went back to doing whatever Torre did when he wasn’t eating on Dex’s bed.
Dex looked at Zane across the room.
Said nothing.
Went back to his laptop.
The room settled into its usual evening frequency. Gerald wheezing. The campus outside doing its Friday thing. The delivery ETA ticking down on the communicator screen.
Zane looked at his hands.
’B-rank output on both Sigils confirmed in a live context,’ he thought. ’NSA assessment in less than two weeks. And Vael was looking at me like she already knew.’
’Like she’s been knowing,’ he thought.
The system surfaced.
『 System Note: NSA assessment — 11 days. The system notes today’s live context performance has changed the host’s visible ceiling profile. What the NSA equipment reads in eleven days will not match what it would have read two weeks ago. The system recommends deciding what to show them before they decide what they’ve seen. 』
’Working on it,’ he thought.
The delivery notification beeped.
He got up.
