Chapter 110: Chapter 110| Joint Practical

Vael was forty minutes into her Friday theory session when the knock came.

Not a student knock. The specific two-tap of someone who had already decided they were coming in before the response arrived.

The door opened.

A woman Zane didn’t recognise stepped through. Tall, close-cropped hair, the specific composed energy of someone who ran their own classroom and was comfortable walking into someone else’s. She crossed to Vael without looking at the students. Said something low enough that the front row couldn’t catch it.

Vael listened. Nodded once.

Looked at the class.

"Pack up," she said. "We’re going to have a Practical session. Both classes. Head to Arena Two."

The room reacted. Not loudly, just the specific animated shuffle of twenty one students who had been sitting in theory and had just been handed something more interesting.

Zane closed his notebook.

Beside him Maren was already standing.

The corridor between the academic block and the practical complex filled with the combined energy of 1-A and 1-B merging into the same hallway for the first time.

Zane moved through it.

The system surfaced immediately.

『 Multiple rank Sigils entering proximity range 』

『 Nyx Hale — Kinetic Force — B-rank — detected 』

『 Sera Dunne — Heat Sense — A-rank — detected 』

『 Reid Cross — deciphering in progress 』

『 Marco Ellis — deciphering in progress 』

He looked across the corridor.

1-B students filtering in from the east stairwell. Different faces. Some familiar from corridor encounters and the cafeteria. Some he hadn’t placed yet.

Nyx was near the back of the 1-B group. She was in uniform today, which he knew. Dark hair down to her waist moving with the corridor energy. She hadn’t spotted him yet.

Sera was three people ahead of Nyx. Olive green hoodie, quite different from the cafeteria version, this one fitted rather than oversized. The specific version of her that existed outside the lunch table context.

He looked at her.

’Heatwave,’ he thought. ’She Took Third place during trials. Sigil A-rank Heat Sense. I’ve only ever seen her at a cafeteria table.’

’This is going to be different,’ he thought.

_ _

Arena Two was larger than the standard practical complex rooms.

High ceiling. Composite floor marked with zone boundaries in faint lines. Observation gallery running along the upper level, currently empty. The kind of space built for multi-student drills rather than individual assessments.

Both classes filed in and spread across the floor.

Vael stood at the front with the 1-B instructor. Who Zane now caught the name of from Maren’s low murmur beside him: Instructor Reyes. Short. Direct energy. The kind of composed that came from running a class that had Marco Ellis and Sera Dunne in it simultaneously.

Zane looked between the two of them.

Then at Instructor Mori’s face surfacing briefly in his memory. Then Stacy Reed. Then Vael.

’Most of the instructors I’ve encountered are women,’ he thought. ’Does the NSA have a thing for keeping men out of education positions or something.’

The system surfaced.

『 NSA instructor demographic data — female instructors represent 67% of first year academy staff across all registered institutions. The system notes this is consistent with NSA hiring patterns favouring emotional intelligence metrics in early development roles. The system also notes the host noticed this for reasons that may not be entirely academic. 』

’That last part was unnecessary,’ he thought.

『 The system disagrees. Context matters. 』

Vael looked across both classes.

"Before we run anything," she said. "We will have a short theory. Pay attention, it’s relevant to what you’re about to do."

She looked across the combined floor. Then began speaking:

"Sigil compatibility in team engagements," she said. "Most of you have been training as solo operators. Your Sigil. Your output. Your ceiling. That’s the frame you’ve been working in." She paused. "Today that frame breaks."

She walked slowly across the front of the floor.

"When you put two Sigils in proximity during a live engagement they don’t just coexist, they interact. Offensive output from one operator changes the field that a defensive operator is working in. Terrain manipulation shifts the engagement range for speed-based Sigils. Support output creates windows that offensive operators may not even know they’re being given." She stopped. "A team that understands this wins engagements that better individual operators lose."

The room was quiet.

"The best teams in NSA field operations aren’t the ones with the highest individual ranks," Vael continued. "They’re the ones where each operator knows what the person beside them is running and has adjusted their own output accordingly."

Zane looked at his hands.

’Compatibility,’ he thought. ’Two Sigils running simultaneously. I’ve been doing that since Impact Breaker and Overdrive both hit B-rank. Running them in tandem is exactly what she’s describing, except mine are both mine.’

The system surfaced.

『 System Note: The host has been running Sigil compatibility instinctively. Vael is now providing the theoretical framework for what the host already does. The system finds this satisfying. 』

’Don’t get smug,’ he thought.

『 The system is simply noting alignment between field application and academic theory. 』

Instructor Reyes stepped forward.

Zane clocked her properly as she moved.

Probably Mid thirties. Brown hair pulled back in a practical doughnut knot that had probably been probably neat at 7AM and was doing its best to maintain that impression. A professional blazer over a fitted shirt. the shirt doing the specific work that fitted shirts did when the person wearing them had a chest that had made its own architectural decisions. The blazer worked as a supporting structure rather than a concealment strategy. What it was concealing was already visible through professional eyes regardless.

’Another one,’ he thought.

The system surfaced.

『 The system notes the host’s observation. The system also notes this is the fourth female instructor the host has assessed in this manner since arriving at Aldren. The system is beginning to see a pattern. 』

’There’s no pattern,’ he thought.

『 Vael. Mori. Stacy Reed. Now Reyes. The system respectfully submits that four data points constitute a pattern. 』

’They’re instructors,’ he thought mentally.

『 The system agrees. Very well structured instructors. 』

’That’s enough,’ he said, ending the conversation mid discussion.

Instructor Reyes looked across both classes with the specific energy of someone who had been waiting for the theory portion to finish.

"Ready?" She directed it at Vael.

Vael nodded.

Reyes looked at the students.

"Let’s kick it off then." She clapped once and looked across the floor like she was already done waiting.

"Two mixed teams — 1-A and 1-B on each side. You’re not with your classmates today, you’re with whoever the list says." She pointed at the side wall without looking at it. "Zone control. Five minutes per phase, three phases. Hold your zone, score points. Lose your zone, score nothing. Simple, sounds familiar right." A brief pause. "Teams are posted. Find your side. You’ve got two minutes, don’t waste them standing here looking at me."

The floor broke into movement.
