Chapter 102: Chapter 102| Who doesn’t like rice on thursdays III
The plates sat empty between them.
Neither of them moved to clear them.
The room had settled into the specific quiet of a space that had finished its stated purpose and was waiting to find out what came next. The half drawn blind filtering the Thursday evening light down to something warmer than it had been when Maren arrived. The cooktop cooling on the counter. The smell of the food still present but fading.
Maren had her hands wrapped around the cup of water she’d brought in her bag. The specific detail of someone who had thought ahead about what she wanted to drink with dinner and had brought it herself rather than asking.
Zane looked at her across the small table.
She looked at him.
"You actually cooked," she said. The second time she’d said it. Like she was still processing the gap between what she’d expected and what had actually happened.
"You keep saying that."
"Because I keep being surprised by it." She set the cup down. The off-shoulder top shifted slightly with the movement. The neckline doing what it had been doing since she walked through the door and had not stopped doing since.
He kept his eyes on her face.
Managed it.
’The fabric is working very hard tonight,’ he thought.
The system surfaced.
『 The system notes the host has been managing eye contact with considerable discipline for the past forty minutes. The system respects the effort. 』
’Thank you,’ he thought.
『 The system notes discipline has its limits. 』
’Shush,’ he thought.
Maren tilted her head slightly. "What are you thinking about."
He looked up from the empty plate. "Nothing." Too quickly. Even he could hear how immediately that had come out.
She looked at him with the calculating stillness. "You have a face."
"I always had a face."
"A specific one." She leaned forward slightly on the table. The off-shoulder top responding to the change in angle with the specific generosity it had been showing all evening, her boobs were slightly visible from her cleavage. Zane could see the thin lines stretching to her slightly visible nipples from her bra. "Let me guess." A small smile. "Lewd thoughts."
He looked at her.
’She’s not wrong,’ he thought.
"I was thinking about the oil," he said.
She stared at him.
"The oil," she repeated flatly.
"It was behind the cooktop," he said. "Still processing it."
She looked at him for a long moment with the expression of someone who knew she was being deflected and had decided it was funnier to let it go than push on it.
The corner of her mouth.
"Sure," she said.
"You’re quite observant," he said.
"Always had to be ." She didn’t lean back. Just stayed there. Her elbows were on the table, chin slightly forward, the dusty rose fabric doing its evening work at that angle.
The room was very quiet.
He looked at her properly.
The Thursday evening version of her. Hair down. Off-shoulder top that had been a significant problem since the doorway. Empty plates between them and nothing scheduled after.
"Maren," he said.
She looked at him.
"The favour," he said. "Is it paid?."
She held his gaze for a long moment. The calculating stillness running whatever it always ran. Then something shifted in it, the calculation stepping back and something more direct taking its place.
"Depends," she said quietly.
"On what."
She looked at the table between them. Then back at him.
"On whether this is just dinner." The words coming out carefully. Like she’d been holding them at a specific distance and had just decided to set them down.
He looked at her.
’Is it just dinner,’ he thought.
The system surfaced.
『 The system would like to point out that she asked first. Again. The system notes this pattern with considerable satisfaction. 』
He pushed back from his chair.
Walked around the small table.
Maren tracked him with her eyes as he came around to her side. Not moving back, not adjusting her posture, just watching him with the specific expression of someone who had asked a question and was waiting for the answer in whatever form it arrived.
He stopped beside her chair.
Looked down at her.
The off-shoulder top from this angle was. A considerable amount of information. The dusty rose fabric. The curve of her shoulder. Her nipples were now partly visible from the gap in her bra in her seated position.
She looked up at him.
Face already going pink. The controlled version. the one that appeared when she’d decided not to let it go full red but was losing the fight at the edges.
"It’s not just dinner," he said.
She held his gaze.
Then reached up and took his hand.
Pulled him down toward her slowly. Not rushed, not dramatic, just the specific deliberate movement of someone who had made a decision and was executing it with the same precision they brought to burst sequences and tactical pushes and everything else.
His free hand found her waist.
The slim waist through the fabric of the trousers. The warmth of her. The specific reality of her sitting right there in room seven on a Thursday evening being considerably more than a training partner.
She looked up at him from close range.
"You cooked something with rice," she said. Very quietly.
"You asked for it," he said. Just as quietly.
"I know." The corner of her mouth. Not the smirk. "I’m saying thank you."
He looked at her.
Then he closed the distance.
’Maren has been considerably more outspoken since the first time I knew her,’ he thought. ’And I’m just the one lazing around.’
The kiss landed the way the first one had. Soft, then real. The kind that happened between two people who had been moving toward something for weeks and had both finally stopped pretending they weren’t.
When they pulled back she was fully red.
The system surfaced.
『 GACHA METER: 26% → 34% 』
『 Fill source: Kiss with bond target — elevated fill rate applied 』
『 Bond depth accumulation detected 』
’Shush system’. He said mentally, then he looked at her.
She looked at him.
The room quiet around them. Thick walls. Half drawn blind. Thursday evening doing its thing.
Her hand was still in his.
His was still at her waist.
Neither of them moved to change that.
"Zane," she said softly.
He looked at her.
The off-shoulder top. The hair down. The full red face. The hand in his.
"Yeah," he said.
She stood up from the chair slowly. Closing the remaining distance between them until the dusty rose fabric was pressing against his chest and her face was right there and the room had become very specifically just the two of them.
She looked up at him.
"Don’t waste the room," she said.
He almost laughed.
’Don’t waste the room,’ he thought. ’That’s the most Maren way that sentence has ever been delivered.’
The system surfaced one final time.
『 System Note: The system is going quiet now. As designed. Enjoy your Thursday. 』
He looked at Maren.
She looked at him.
