My Desire System: The More They Want Me, The Stronger I Get
Chapter 72: Acid Debt
Andre swung the crane boom through the darkness, smashing the counterweight into a cluster of lurkers attempting to scale the clinic roof.
The crane motor groaned under the sudden strain, shedding hot sparks from its gears as the impact threw broken chitin across the alley floor.
"Keep your heads down on the bridge!" Andre bellowed from the cab, reversing the winch to prepare another sweeping strike against the canal wall.
"Watch the western corner!" a dockworker yelled from the barricade, pointing toward five crawling beasts climbing over the support girders.
Andre adjusted the levers with practiced speed, sending the hook crashing through the climbing swarm before they could reach the roofline.
The impact smashed two beasts into pulp against the masonry, scattering their shattered carapaces across the alleyway below the clinic windows.
"Clear the loading zone!" Andre warned over the cab loudspeaker, swinging the boom in a wide defensive arc over the warehouse alley.
The dockworkers ducked beneath the swinging cable, using cutting torches to weld fractured joints along the damaged perimeter barricade.
Cole stood firm in the center of the span, putting his density into the sledge as three beasts clawed at his chest and found meat, not plate.
A cluster of crawling creatures attempted to chew through the lower support conduits, but Cole stomped the timbers with crushing density to break their hold.
A spray of yellow acid hissed across Cole’s forearm, burning through his work shirt and forcing a harsh roar of pain from his throat.
"GAAH... that burn bites deep!" Cole shouted, swinging his sledge in a wide horizontal arc that crushed two lurkers against the bridge railing.
The dockworkers directed the high-pressure water stream over Cole’s shoulders, washing away the corrosive acid before it could eat into his flesh.
"Hold the center!" Cole bellowed, leaning into the freezing water spray as he planted his feet against the slippery bridge planks.
The defenders braced their shoulders against the timber barricades, using long pry bars to lever the thrashing alien corpses into the churning canal.
Leo drove his blade through an advancing beast, stepping into the breach as another wave scrambled over the western support beams.
A leaping lurker ruptured above his guard, splashing a stream of caustic digestive fluid across the bare skin of his left forearm.
"Kh-!"
Leo gritted his teeth against the searing agony, dropping to one knee as the acid dissolved his sleeve and blistered the flesh beneath.
The caustic heat sizzled against his exposed skin, filling the air with the pungent chemical stench of dissolving fibers and scorched tissue.
The Vorn genome within his blood stirred with a faint, nauseous pulse, recognizing the foreign compound without granting total immunity to the burn.
He did not attempt to absorb the corrosive damage into his core, knowing that physical endurance alone would have to carry him through the fight.
Tearing a strip of fabric from his coat, he bound the weeping burn tightly against his arm to keep his fingers functioning on the hilt.
A young dockworker offered him a clean linen strip from a medical crate, helping him knot the bandage tight above the scorched wrist.
"Do not let the spray reach your eyes!" he shouted to the dockworkers, rising to his feet as two more beasts lunged from the water.
Across the bridgehead, Luna’s mass-purge aura pulsed from the clinic steps, washing cool emerald light over the workers who inhaled the acidic fumes.
Tessa moved along the barricade with a tray of fresh ampoules, pressing neutralizer doses into the hands of burned defenders.
"Drink the antitoxin before the vapor settles in your chest!" Tessa commanded, guiding a coughing welder back toward the secondary barricade.
"The clinic is holding because of those vials," Bekka called down from the air, kicking a winged lurker into the churning water below. "Keep fighting!"
The dockworkers answered with a determined roar, swinging pipes and firing pressurized water into the encroaching swarm of chitinous beasts.
Two volunteer runners carried wounded defenders across the bridge, delivering them into the capable hands of Richter’s triage team behind the line.
"We have forty-two healers on their feet inside," a runner called out, his voice full of fierce pride. "They are purging the wounded right now!"
"Keep the supply line open!" Rhodes barked through the clinic doorway, passing another crate of freshly synthesized ampoules onto the platform.
The steady flow of neutralizer kept the defenders upright, washing away the paralyzing alien poison before it could take root in their veins.
Leo rose from the boards with his blade raised, stepping back into formation beside Cole as the clock crawled through ten grueling minutes of combat.
Every second was paid in torn flesh and splintered wood, holding the line through pure grit while the clinic worked behind their backs.
Cole shattered the carapace of another lunging creature, his breath coming in ragged wheezes as his density began to flicker under fatigue.
"We held them ten minutes," Cole grunted, wiping blood from his forehead with the back of his bruised hand. "The clinic is still standing."
"They are pulling back toward the deep channel," a welder shouted, lowering his cutting torch as the remaining lurkers scrambled into the water.
Andre’s crane boom swept across the canal once more, clearing the western pilings as the relentless wave of minor lurkers began to thin.
The defenders leaned against the railings in exhausted relief, bandaging their burns while watching the dark surface of the canal begin to bubble.
"Check the wounded along the barricade," he ordered, lowering his weapon as steam began hissing through the gaps between the bridge planks.
The water did not calm with the retreat of the vanguard beasts; instead, the entire canal basin began to boil with violent intensity.
Steam billowed from the churning water in blinding clouds, hissing against the cooling bridge timbers as the foundations shook with rhythmic tremors.
The bridge deck shuddered beneath their feet as a violent displacement of water surged upward from the canal floor.
Geysers of boiling foam erupted twenty feet into the air, throwing scalding spray across the forward barricades and blinding the front ranks.
A twenty-five-foot silhouette rose from the scalding froth, its plated skull rising above the bridge deck as steaming water poured from its armor.
The Brood Alpha turned its glowing sensory clusters toward the bridge, locking its gaze onto the pulsing All-Spark inside Leo’s chest.
It opened its gaping maw to release a deafening sonic screech, vibrating the bridge timbers and shattering the windows along the clinic facade.
Leo stepped to the forward edge of the bridge pylon with his blade drawn, positioning his body between the monster and the clinic doors.
He tightened his grip on the hilt with his burned hand, feeling his All-Spark thrum in direct resonance against the monstrous alien presence.
The beast planted its armored front claws into the canal bedrock, preparing to lunge across the bridge where the defenders stood their ground.
"Cole, get the wounded into the warehouse," Leo commanded quietly, raising the Null Razor as the beast coiled its plated tail to strike.
The dockworkers scrambled to pull the remaining injured behind the secondary barricade, leaving Leo alone on the forward span to face the beast.
He adjusted his footing against the trembling timbers, locking his gaze with the creature as acidic drool sizzled into the boiling water below.
