My Desire System: The More They Want Me, The Stronger I Get
Chapter 62: Shadow Over Gold
Sierra’s hijacked signal reached the chalet first, painting an unknown transponder across every terrace screen.
Bekka stepped beneath the terrace canopy beside Leo, still wearing her tribunal credential while rain crossed the mountain beyond them.
"Gruber woke three Project Smith prototypes, and every route suggests they’re coming here instead of escaping the city," she said.
"Then we prepare the grounds, move Luna and Richter below, and make their arrival cost more than Gruber expected," he answered.
"Before orders start, explain why challenging Hancock while injured seemed remotely intelligent to you yesterday."
Her anger carried through the bond, sharpening Gale-Reflex while she pushed one finger against his chest above the All-Spark.
Leo caught her wrist without force, recognizing the relief beneath every accusation she brought home from the tribunal.
"He stood between Kage and the evidence, while surviving three minutes gave Sierra enough time to copy everything," he said.
"You could’ve died proving a point to somebody too drunk for loyalty, memory, or responsible decision-making," Bekka replied.
"I returned alive, and Hancock walked into your tribunal sober enough to break Gruber’s story."
She watched the rain, gripping the terrace rail while her credential flickered inside her hand.
"That doesn’t make watching his fist miss your skull by centimeters feel reasonable," she admitted through clenched teeth.
"You watched that recording twice, which sounds dangerously close to worrying about me," Leo teased.
Bekka turned and struck his shoulder, avoiding the healing bruises while failing to hide her unsteady breath afterward.
"I worried. Losing you would ruin everything."
He stepped closer without releasing her wrist, letting warmth move through their bond while rain drummed beyond the canopy.
"That sounds romantic when you aren’t threatening my face or insulting survival instincts," Leo said.
"Your survival instincts deserve insults, but the rest of you earned something better for coming back," she answered.
Her hand opened against his chest, feeling the reactor pulse beneath his skin before she raised her eyes again.
Bekka pulled him down and kissed him, spending every accusation through pressure against his mouth.
He answered, holding her waist while every terrace alarm remained quiet throughout their private moment.
"If you mention Hancock-"
"I wasn’t going to."
"Good."
For several breaths, the tribunal and invasion disappeared, leaving only rain beyond the canopy and warmth between them.
Bekka rested her forehead against his, finally letting relief replace the anger she carried home.
"I was admiring your new title. Official Liaison sounds dangerously respectable."
"The title lets me enter Association vaults, command field teams, and arrest anyone making terrible jokes," she said.
"Then my first official request is immunity whenever your mouth distracts me from incoming assassins during attacks tonight."
She kissed him again, shorter and fiercer, before Sierra’s voice broke through the terrace speakers from her offshore yacht.
"Sorry, handsome, but three unfriendly neighbors crossed my hijacked transponder with ninety seconds remaining," Sierra announced from offshore.
Bekka pulled away, staring at the speaker for one breath as irritation replaced the softness across her expression.
"Did she call you handsome during an assassination warning, or does that yacht scramble ordinary vocabulary?" she asked.
"Sierra alternates insults and compliments. Sorting them creates emotional paperwork."
"Shadow boy understands my vocabulary, although his jealous liaison audits every syllable during emergencies like this," Sierra replied.
Wind gathered around Bekka’s gauntlets before Leo redirected the first gust away from Sierra’s speaker.
"Call him shadow boy again, and your yacht will discover how accurately I can throw weather," she warned.
"Noted, Official Liaison, but save that delightful hostility for the three identical killers approaching your terrace," Sierra replied.
The system warmed behind Leo’s eyes, catching the bond shift while Bekka remained pressed against him beneath the canopy.

"Your resonance jumped after one kiss and two threats. Impressive."
The new resonance spread through their bond, making each shift of her stance clear before her gauntlets moved.
She felt his answering balance through Gale-Reflex, then adjusted the western pressure field without needing another spoken command.
"Mention that measurement again, and I’ll demonstrate how affection improves my punching accuracy," Bekka replied.
Their shared rhythm settled before the warning ended, replacing spoken coordination with pressure traveling through the bond between them.
Bekka tested the bond once, sending a warning gust past his shoulder without touching him.
He smiled while drawing the Null Razor, feeling Gale-Reflex sharpen as her wind spread across the terrace approaches.
Kage flowed from his shadow and covered the western wall, searching for movement beneath the rain beyond the lights.
"Luna and Richter reached the bunker, while Tempest waits safely below the eastern ridge for evacuation," Sierra reported.
"Nobody evacuates. Keep them away from the districts."
Bekka tightened both gauntlets, testing the air while her new credential transmitted an emergency request toward nearby heroes.
No acknowledgment returned, proving Gruber’s remaining officers still controlled the response network around them despite Kingsley’s public verdict.
Bekka sent the request again under Kingsley’s seal, watching three command nodes reject her new authority without explanation.
Richter sealed the bunker doors below them, while Luna layered lotus barriers across every entrance from the inner chamber.
Tempest circled beyond the ridge instead of landing, keeping their only escape route hidden from the three approaching killers below.
Sierra cut the chalet’s public power, forcing the prototypes to hunt through darkness controlled by Kage inside the grounds.
"Nobody answered. Government service already feels familiar."
"You wanted a title, and disappointment is apparently included with every official promotion," Leo replied.
Sierra placed three moving markers across the terrace display, each approaching from a different side of the mountain.
Each marker paused at the perimeter, matching the others while Kage moved beneath their shared approach through darkness.
"Their bodies share one signal, but each carries enough Ether to register near A-rank output."
"They’ll surround us before striking first unless Gruber programmed patience out of whichever laboratory built them," Bekka said.
Leo opened the Shadow Domain beneath the terrace floor, connecting every support pillar with paths Kage could cross instantly.
The assassins slowed outside the perimeter, already testing the domain while their shared transponder copied his defensive frequency.
"They’re learning. Don’t repeat an attack."
"Good. Repetition bores me."
"I can criticize you while fighting, kissing, or falling from orbit, and you’ve witnessed every example," she said.
One marker vanished from Sierra’s display, reappearing above them before the terrace sensors could react.
Kage struck upward through the ceiling shadow, but an identical hand caught its jaw and forced it downward.
"First contact overhead, and the other two just accelerated through the western perimeter," Sierra shouted.
Leo raised the Null Razor while Bekka crossed both gauntlets, combining gravity and wind above the terrace canopy.
Their attack reached empty space as the first prototype shifted aside, moving with a rhythm copied from Apex Evasion.
"It copied your reflex pattern. Gruber used combat data."
"Then we change the lesson together until their borrowed instincts become the reason they fail here," Leo answered.
Three identical figures struck the terrace dome together, shattering it before dropping through the wreckage around both fighters.
