My Desire System: The More They Want Me, The Stronger I Get
Chapter 44: The Approaching Storm
Morning news broadcasts flashed across giant holographic billboards above every district square, dominating the city’s headlines.
News footage of black smoke billowing over the dark ocean waters of District 3 played continuously on repeat, displaying the submerged wreckage of the Golden Leviathan.
The official Hero Association press secretary stood stiffly behind a podium with a grim expression, attempting to downplay the loss of the luxury yacht.
"The illegal vigilante known as the Ghost has struck again," the broadcast announcer declared in an urgent tone.
"Crime Lord Flint and his syndicate leadership were eliminated during an offshore explosion, marking the complete collapse of the syndicate."
"Apex Chairman Gruber has pledged deployment of automated defense droids across all maritime trade routes," the reporter added.
Leo switched off the wall-mounted screen inside the safehouse study, leaning back against his chair as the morning sun warmed the room.
He opened his secure burner console, entering an encrypted wire transfer sequence to an off-the-grid account in District 9.
[ Wire Transfer Authorized: 100,000 Credits Transferred To Recipient: Doc Richter ]
[ Destination Account: District 9 Underground Clinic Fund ]
[ Remaining Liquid Wealth: 1,303,500 Credits ]
A text notification pinged on his screen seconds later with a personal message from the doctor.
"The funds arrived in our shelter, Leo," Richter wrote in digital text.
"With this money, we can buy surgical equipment, clean medicine, and build a permanent underground clinic where the gangs cannot touch us."
"The whole district is celebrating Flint’s downfall, you gave these people their lives back."
"Toby and the dockworkers have already set up perimeter guards to make sure no other gang tries to claim the docks," the doctor added.
"District 9 is breathing freely for the first time in twenty years."
Leo closed the message with a satisfied nod, walking out of the study and into the sunlit living room of the penthouse.
Bekka sat on the training mat in a modified dark tactical vest, her old Horizon badge absent from her collar.
She was tightening the tension cables on her wrist gauntlets, testing her aero-compression valves with sharp hisses of air.
"You look ready for a war," Leo said, stepping onto the carpet.
"I am done waiting around while corporate executives try to put bounties on my head," Bekka answered, looking up with determination.
"When I wore that Association badge, I had to follow protocols that protected corrupt scumbags like Flint and Gruber."
"Now that I am off their payroll, I can finally hit them where it hurts."
"The Association officially designated me as a rogue meta operative this morning," she added with a proud smirk.
"They put a hundred-thousand-credit capture bounty on my file, but none of their junior heroes have the courage to come down to District 8 to collect it."
"They know you would break their jaws before they could reach for their restraints," Leo remarked with a dry grin.
"You bet I would," she chuckled, flexing her gloved fingers.
"I spent four years watching corporate sponsors buy out crime scenes and bury civilian casualties under contracts."
"I am looking forward to giving them a taste of their own medicine," she added with a dark gleam in her eyes.
Luna walked in from the kitchen carrying a ceramic tray with three steaming mugs of chamomile tea, her eyes shining with warmth.
She set the tray down on the coffee table and immediately wrapped her arms around Leo’s waist, resting her face against his chest.
"I saw the news reports about the yacht," Luna murmured softly, her fingers clutching his dark shirt.
"When they said Flint was dead, half the nurses in District 8 started crying in relief."
"He will not ever threaten you or your clinic again," Leo promised gently, resting his hand against the back of her head.
"The syndicate is gone for good."
Luna pulled back with a tearful smile, handing a warm mug to Bekka before sitting beside them on the sofa.
She noticed a faint purple bruise along Bekka’s collarbone from the hunter droid battle and gently placed her hand over the injury.
An emerald-gold light radiated from Luna’s palm, soothing the bruised muscle tissue until Bekka let out a relaxed sigh.
"Your healing ether gets stronger every single day, Luna," Bekka said warmly, rolling her shoulder with newfound comfort.
"Thank you, little sister."
"Flint was not acting on his own," Leo explained, taking a seat at the table.
"Before Apex silenced him, he confessed that the attack on your clinic was ordered by Apex Bio-Tech."
Bekka set her ceramic tea mug down with a sharp frown, her jaw tightening with disgust.
"Apex Bio-Tech?" Bekka asked in disbelief.
"They are the largest medical corporation on the continent, they supply half the hospitals in District 1."
"The Chairman’s son is suffering from cellular decay," Leo replied.
"They needed Luna’s vitality ether to synthesize a genetic cure, and they were willing to slaughter an entire clinic to get it."
"Those corporate monsters," Bekka spat, her knuckles whitening as she clenched her fists.
"They treat people like raw materials for their private laboratories."
"Their primary black-site research lab is located in District 1, sub-level four beneath the Apex Medical Tower," Leo said.
"That is where they keep their prototype gene-mods and their third Genesis Shard."
"District 1 is a fortress," Bekka noted, leaning forward with a tactical grimace.
"The entire central sector is surrounded by biometric checkpoints, aerial patrol gunships, and private meta contractors on twenty-four-hour alert."
"We cannot just walk through the front gates like we did on the casino yacht," she added.
"We will not need to," Leo replied calmly.
"We will hit them through their underground transit arteries and tear their security grid apart from the inside."
A chime echoed deep within Leo’s neural pathways, flashing an updated galactic tracking map across his mental HUD.
[ Intercepted Vorn Dominion Orbital Beacon: Telemetry Synchronized ]
[ Dreadnought Vanguard Velocity Multiplier: 1.2x ]
[ Estimated Time Until Orbital Insertion: 10 Days, 04 Hours, 18 Minutes ]
The cosmic countdown had accelerated, shortening their preparation window by nearly four full days.
"We do not have time to wait for Apex to make the next move," Leo said, his voice hardening into resolve.
"An alien warship is entering Earth’s orbit in exactly ten days."
"If we do not breach District 1, destroy Apex Bio-Tech, and secure the remaining shards before that cruiser arrives, the entire city will be reduced to ash."
Bekka stood up from the mat, adjusting her aero-gauntlets with a confident smirk.
"Ten days is more than enough time to tear down a corrupt corporation," she said fiercely.
"Tell me what we need to break into District 1."
Leo looked out through the safehouse window toward the gleaming towers of the upper metropolis.
"We need better gear, infiltration codes, and enough firepower to shatter their private army."
"I am forging you a new set of alien gauntlets tonight, Bekka," Leo said, his gaze locked on the distant towers.
"The real storm against the corporate rulers of this city begins tonight."
