The reinforced iron transport truck roared into gear as it emerged from the subterranean drainage portal into the rain-slicked industrial avenues.

Behind the wheel sat Cole, his scarred hands gripping the steering column while his injured ribs ached under his heavy leather harness.

"We have three armored interceptor skiffs closing fast from the northern boulevard!" Redline reported, leaning out the passenger window with her brass binoculars.

"The molecular synthesizer cannot survive high-speed turbulence if you hit the central tram rails at sixty miles an hour," Sierra warned from the cargo flatbed.

"Then Cole drives steady on the asphalt while we handle the interceptors," Leo ordered, standing tall on the flatbed beside the secured chrome machine.

"I have been driving these narrow alleys since before the syndicates paved the tram lines," Cole shouted back through the rear cab window.

"Just keep your boots planted and make sure those corporate vultures do not drop a magnetic mine onto my roof," Cole added, shifting gears with practiced muscle memory.

A high-pitched turbine whine echoed across the cobblestones as the first corporate skiff surged into view, its mounted plasma cannons glowing turquoise.

"Can your Tempest beast carry the synthesizer across the rooftops?" Bekka asked, drawing her wind-saber as the first plasma blast scorched the asphalt.

"Tempest has the wing strength to carry two scouts, but balancing two tons of uncalibrated quartz glass in flight would snap its harness," Leo answered.

"What about Redline’s speed aura?" Bekka asked, deflecting a secondary bolt of superheated gas with a sweeping wind slash.

"Redline can outrun a bullet, but she cannot haul a two-ton industrial chassis without tearing her shoulder joints apart," Leo explained.

"This fight belongs to ordinary drivers and street routes," Cole yelled over the roar of the diesel engine, downshifting into third gear.

"Toby, do we have any ground support along the secondary canal boulevard?" Leo called out through his tactical comm transmitter.

"My street runners have already greased the tram rails at the third intersection with heavy industrial tallow!" Toby’s voice crackled through the receiver.

"If the interceptor skiffs drop down to skim the pavement, their magnetic repulsors will lose traction against the grease," Toby revealed with audible delight.

"Take the southern lumber alley behind the old glassworks, Cole!" Leo commanded, tracking the interceptors’ approach trajectories with his golden eyes.

"That alley is only eight feet wide with overhead laundry lines and low brick overhangs," Cole warned, wrenching the wheel hard to the left.

"That is exactly why corporate skiffs with twelve-foot stabilizer fins will shear their wings off if they follow us," Leo said with a fierce grin.

The heavy truck skidded violently across the wet street, its rear tires smoking as Cole threaded the massive vehicle into the narrow alleyway.

The lead corporate interceptor attempted to pursue, its pilot refusing to throttle back his twin thrusters.

A deafening screech of ripping titanium echoed between the brick tenements as the interceptor’s port stabilizer wing struck a stone archway.

The damaged skiff spun out of control, slamming into a row of abandoned iron dumpsters in a blinding shower of fuel sparks.

"One down, two still hunting our tail!" Redline cheered, clinging to the cab rail like a nimble squirrel.

"Do not celebrate yet, runner, the remaining two are climbing for an altitude strike!" Bekka shouted, pointing toward the murky storm clouds.

The remaining two interceptors gained altitude, sweeping above the rooftops to bypass the narrow alley choke points.

"They are positioning for an overhead strafing run directly into our open cargo bed," Sierra shouted, deploying her shadow spool across the rear gate.

"Hold the synthesizer steady, Sierra, do not let the mounting straps loosen by a millimeter," Leo instructed, stepping onto the truck’s tailgate.

"If they fire another plasma salvo from that angle, the splash heat will shatter the quartz catalytic core," Sierra warned, her face tight with worry.

"Then I will make sure they never get the chance to pull the firing trigger," Leo said, his eyes blazing with absolute focus.

The twin interceptors dove simultaneously from the dark storm clouds, their nose cannons spinning up to unleash a devastating volley of plasma fire.

Leo crouched low on the vibrating metal gate, channeling the full kinetic resonance of his desire core into the soles of his boots.

He did not use Shadow-Walk, knowing the localized electromagnetic distortion of the skiffs would disrupt his spatial coordinates.

Instead, Leo relied upon raw Level 43 physical velocity, launching himself ten paces into the air like a fired ballista bolt.

He intercepted the first skiff mid-dive, landing heavily upon its reinforced cockpit canopy with both combat boots.

The pilot stared upward in horror through the armored viewport as Leo drove the Null Razor directly through the primary thruster housing.

Kinetic Dispersal Strike detonated within the turbine core, instantly neutralizing the vessel’s propulsion without triggering a catastrophic fuel explosion.

The disabled interceptor glided into an empty coal yard, skidding to a safe halt against a mountain of black slag.

Leo leaped from the descending fuselage, tucking into a tight shoulder roll across the slate roof of a dye factory.

He sprinted along the roof ridge and timed his jump perfectly, dropping back down onto the cargo flatbed as Cole burst out onto the boundary avenue.

The third interceptor pilot aborted his attack run, peeling away into the upper clouds as the truck crossed the fortified perimeter gate into District Nine.

Hundreds of district residents lined the boundary walls, cheering and banging metal pots as the convoy cleared the checkpoint barricades.

Leo exhaled a long breath as the warm golden light of Level 44 infused his weary muscles with renewed vitality.

"You really jumped ten feet in the air to disarm a gunship with a spear?" Redline asked, staring at him with hero-worship in her wide eyes.

"It was cheaper than buying an anti-aircraft missile," Leo laughed, tousling her auburn hair.

"Cole, pull up directly to the clinic’s southern loading ramp," Bekka instructed, sheathing her humming saber.

"The synthesizer is completely intact with zero pressure variance in the catalytic chamber," Sierra announced after checking the digital gauges.

"Tessa and Luna are already waiting at the clinic doors with the installation tools," Cole said, coughing slightly as he parked the truck.

"You drove like a champion, Cole," Leo said, stepping over to the driver’s side to offer his hand.

"Just doing my job, Commander," Cole replied with a tired grin, though a sudden wince crossed his rugged face as he unlatched his harness.

"Did any of the interceptors manage to deploy tracking beacons onto our carriage?" Sierra asked, running her sensor wand over the rear axle.

"The resonance pulse from Leo’s strike fried every micro-transmitter within fifty yards," Bekka confirmed, checking the telemetry screen.

"That gives us enough time to unload the synthesizer before their ground forces can organize a raid," Cole said, coughing softly into his sleeve.

"Tessa is already clearing the clean-room workbench so we can begin testing immediately," Leo said, helping Cole down from the cab.

The medicine had crossed the border, and District Seven now possessed the means to forge its own salvation.
