Read Chapter 109
Li Fan watched the keeper's rotation for the better part of a month, never from the same vantage twice, never longer than a delivery or an herb-gathering errand could reasonably justify. The pattern took shape slowly. A junior elder climbed to the fifth terrace's gate at the new moon and stayed a full lunar month before another took the post, always alone, always arriving with a carried satchel of supplies that suggested the duty required no outside support once begun.
He caught the changeover itself only once, timing an herb-gathering trip along the boundary path to coincide with what his weeks of patient counting told him should be the transition. The outgoing elder came through the gate at dusk, and Li Fan, positioned at a discreet distance behind a stand of pine, watched the man's face in the fading light with the same careful attention he gave any difficult diagnosis.
☯The elder didn't look tired the way a month of solitary duty should have left him. He looked haunted — eyes fixed determinedly on the path ahead, shoulders drawn tight in a way that had nothing to do with the cold evening air, the particular carriage of a man who'd spent thirty days deliberately not looking at something and hadn't yet allowed himself to stop.
He passed within twenty paces of Li Fan's hidden position without ever glancing aside, and in that proximity Li Fan caught something his eyes alone couldn't have provided — a faint, cold pressure against his own trained senses, the kind of residual weight a powerful cultivator's aura sometimes left clinging to cloth and skin long after its source had been left behind. Not hostile. Not even directed at anything in particular. Simply present, the way frost lingered on stone long after the sun had cleared a slope.

☯Li Fan didn't follow him. He'd learned enough for one evening, and pressing further risked exactly the kind of attention he'd spent a month carefully avoiding. He returned home instead and sat with Old Mu over the shop's evening tea, laying out what he'd seen.
"A haunted man and cold air," Old Mu said, unimpressed. "That's the whole of what a month's patient watching bought you?"
"It's confirmation, not answer." Li Fan turned his cup slowly between his hands. "Whatever's behind that gate is real enough to leave a residue on a grown man's spirit after thirty days of proximity. Real enough that even the sect's own elders dread the duty rather than treat it as ceremony. That's not nothing. It tells me the containment ward isn't decoration, and it tells me whatever it's containing is powerful enough to unsettle men who've spent their whole lives around powerful things."
Old Mu considered that, and nodded slowly, conceding the point. "And the dragon mark. Still nothing connecting the two."
"Still nothing," Li Fan admitted. "Two mysteries, still walking separate roads as far as I can tell. I'd rather leave them separate than force a bridge between them out of impatience."
☯He didn't return to the boundary path again that season. He'd taken what the keeper's rotation had to teach a careful, patient watcher, and pushing further would have meant crossing from observation into genuine trespass — a line he wasn't yet willing to cross for a mystery that, however compelling, still had no direct claim on his own survival the way the pouch and the assassin's blade plainly did.
He turned his attention back to the more immediate thread instead, the one with a name attached to it now rather than only a rumor. The Jiang family's rotating seat over the reception hall's confidential ledger. If anything in this tangled season deserved his focus first, it was the danger already proven to reach into his own life, rather than the older, colder mystery sleeping quietly behind a mountain's cloud.
