Chapter 137: Midnight Bath
Chapter 137: Midnight Bath
The mood around the accommodation that night felt nothing like the excited atmosphere that had filled it just a day earlier.
What had been meant to be a lively school trip had turned into something heavy and mournful.
Word had spread quickly.
Class 3 had lost two classmates—Emily and Calvin. A teacher had also died in the ruins. Other families from different groups had lost loved ones as well. The entire building seemed wrapped in quiet grief.
Originally, the school trip was supposed to last until Monday but after what happened in the Eternal Ruins, the school administration decided to end everything early. The buses would arrive Sunday morning to take everyone back home.
Inside the accommodation halls, whispers drifted through the corridors like ghosts.
Some students who were close to the deceased were crying in their rooms while others simply stared blankly at the ceilings, trying to process everything.
West sat on the edge of his bed earlier that night, staring at the floor in silence.
His uniform was torn in several places and the fabric was stiff with dried blood and dust from the ruin yet there was no injury on his body thanks to the Chalice of Vitality.
.
His roommates had tried asking him what really happened down there, but West had only given the simplest answer.
“There were no survivors.”
Just hearing that had been enough.
No one had the heart to push further.
Still, rumors began circulating not long after.
Apparently, during the large raid against the creatures of the Eternal Ruins over a century ago, the leader of the native monsters had not actually died.
He had only been severely wounded.
Instead of falling in battle, the creature retreated to the third layer and sealed it off completely, using the time to slowly recover its strength.
For over a hundred years… it had been resting and preparing.
And now, according to the fragments of information the awakened investigators were piecing together, that leader had nearly recovered.
It was estimated that around seventy percent of its power had already returned.
Hearing that detail earlier, West realized that if that creature had truly returned to full strength, even using a × 2 Booster layered atop Adrenal Control would not be enough to help him win.
Fortunately, the turn of events favoured him.
By the time the clock passed midnight, most students had finally drifted into uneasy sleep.
Around two in the morning, Nina quietly stepped out of her room.
She wrapped herself in a light bathrobe and made her way down the softly lit wooden corridor toward the traditional Japanese bath area that belonged to the accommodation.
Steam gently drifted through the air as she pushed the door to the female section open.
The hot spring bath was peaceful at this hour.
Mist hovered over the surface of the water, and the only sound was the faint trickling of water flowing from a bamboo pipe into the bath.
Nina sighed quietly as she slipped off her bathrobe and set it neatly on a wooden stool before stepping slowly into the warm water.
The heat wrapped around her body instantly.
For a moment, she simply closed her eyes and let herself relax.
The events of the day had weighed heavily on her heart.
She was glad that West was alright but the classmates and teacher they lost still dampened her mood.
Nina slowly sank deeper into the bath, letting the warm water ease the tension in her shoulders.
But as the mist shifted slightly across the pool, she noticed something that made her eyes widen.
There was someone else in the bath.
A figure sat quietly at the opposite side, partially obscured by steam.
The person was sitting still… with their eyes closed… leaning slightly back against the edge of the pool.
Nina blinked in disbelief.
“…West?”
Slowly opening his eyes, West raised a finger to his lips immediately.
“Shhh,” he whispered quietly. “Don’t be loud.”
Nina stared at him in shock.
“What are you doing here?!” she whispered.
West rubbed his temple.
“What do you mean? I came here to rest.”
He glanced around the misty bath casually before adding,
“Why are you in the male section?”
Nina stared at him like he had lost his mind.
“This is the female section.”
West paused.
“…Are you sure?”
She nodded firmly.
West let out a long breath and leaned back again.
“…My bad.”
He rubbed his eyes.
“The exhaustion must be messing with my head.”
Even now, his body still felt the aftereffects of the intense abilities he had used in the ruins.
The ×2 power booster and adrenal Control…
They had pushed his body far beyond its natural limits.
West slowly stood up in the water.
“Sorry,” he said quietly. “I’ll leave.”
But before he could step out of the bath, Nina reached forward and grabbed his wrist.
“Wait.”
West looked over his shoulder as Nina stepped closer through the steam until she was right behind him.
“Don’t go,” she said softly.
Then she wrapped her arms gently around him from behind, resting her gigantic soft melons on his back.
West froze slightly at the unexpected contact while her forehead rested lightly against his upper back.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
“You look exhausted,” Nina murmured quietly.
West gave a tired half-smile.
“That obvious?”
She nodded against his back.
“You did so much today.”
West only made a low ’hnm’ as a small silence settled between them.
After a moment, Nina spoke again.
“You saved me,” she said quietly.
West exhaled slowly.
“…Anyone would’ve done the same. Besides, it was my summon, not necessarily me.”
“No,” she replied.
Her arms tightened slightly around him.
“It was still thanks to you.”
West gently turned around to face her as the steam drifting across the bath softened everything around them.
For a few seconds, they simply looked at each other.
“You shouldn’t have followed those gang members into the ruins,” West said quietly.
Nina smiled faintly.
“I know.”
She paused briefly before adding:
“But I’d do it again if I thought you were in danger.”
West looked at her silently as Nina’s expression softened.
“For you… I don’t care what happens to me.”
West didn’t respond right away.
Instead, he sat back down in the bath, leaning against the edge again while letting out a little sigh.
Nina moved beside him causing water to ripple gently around them.
After a moment, she reached behind him and began lightly massaging his shoulders.
West blinked in surprise.
“What are you doing?”
“Helping,” she said simply.
Her fingers worked slowly against the stiff muscles along his shoulders and upper back.
“You’re completely tense.”
West hadn’t even realized how tight his body felt until her hands began easing the strain away.
The warmth of the water and the steady rhythm of her touch slowly began loosening the knots in his muscles.
“Your body… its…” Nina muttered with a look of astonishment.
West glanced back slightly.
“It’s what?”
“Nothing,” she said quietly.
Two months ago, he had looked thin and fragile. Now his body had clearly gotten bigger and more hardened with growing muscles.
Nina continued the massage for several quiet minutes without speaking.
Eventually West stood up again, stretching his shoulders slightly in disbelief.
The stiffness had eased.
He looked down at Nina for a moment.
“…Thanks.”
She smiled softly.
“Anytime.”
West hand suddenly reached back and gently grabbed her wrist, pulling her closer.
Nina’s breath got caught in her throat as their bodies touched.
The mist around them seemed to thicken as the distance between them vanished.
West looked down at her, making electrifying eye contact.
“You know…” he said quietly.
“…since you’re offering me a way to relax…”
His hand tightened slightly around her waist as he drew her closer.
“…we might as well take this all the way.”
Nina’s face flushed instantly but she didn’t pull away.
Instead, her fingers slowly slid up to rest against his chest.
For a moment they simply looked at each other.
Then Nina leaned forward and their lips met.
They started with a soft gentle kiss but it didn’t stay that way for long.
West’s hand moved along her waist as he held her closer, while Nina’s arms slowly wrapped around his neck.
The mist curled around them as the warm water rippled outward from their movement.
