My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 405: Ancient Elevator
The elevator had come back up for them, and its doors stood open.
Nobody moved. Blue light still glowed beneath its floor, and the display above the doors showed no level and no destination, only the broken circle, seven sections, with six lit and one dark.
Kai stared at it. "How long has this been here?"
Lily shook her head. "We don’t know."
Aren looked down into the shaft. "We should find out."
Sera glanced at him. "That sounded dangerously enthusiastic."
"I explore ruins."
"You also have a survival instinct."
"I do."
Sera pointed at the elevator. "Then use it."
Aren smiled. "I am." He stepped inside, and Lily followed immediately.
Sera looked at Kai. "They’re going to fight over who gets to touch something first."
Kai stepped in after them. "Probably."
Lily and Aren both looked back. "I heard that."
Kai sighed. "I know."
Sera laughed as she stepped in, and Gabriel came last. The doors closed, and for a moment, nothing happened. Then the elevator began to move, straight down.
The first few levels passed quickly as the display came back to life. Level 1, level 2, level 3, and the numbers kept climbing.
"How deep does the ancient city go?" Kai asked.
"We don’t know," Aren said, looking at the walls.
"You’ve explored thirty-two ruins."
"None like this."
"The construction is changing," Lily said, moving her light across the wall. "The upper levels used the same materials as the ruins we’ve already seen. These are older."
Aren ran his scanner over the surface. "She’s right."
Level 20. Level 30. Level 40.
The walls changed again. The modern metal casing disappeared, and ancient stone replaced it, and then even the stone began to change. The carvings grew simpler, and the symbols turned unfamiliar.
Lily stopped talking, and Kai noticed. "What?"
She shook her head. "I don’t recognize these."
Aren looked at her. "You recognize almost everything."
"Not this."
That caught Kai’s attention. Lily was curious about ancient structures, and she was almost always excited by them, but she was rarely uncertain. Now she was staring at the walls as though they had just challenged everything she thought she knew.
By level 75, the modern world was completely gone. There was no metal, no wiring, and no reinforcement, only ancient stone. The shaft itself seemed to widen, its ceiling rising higher as the blue lights disappeared, until the only light came from small crystals set into the walls.
Aren stared at them. "Those aren’t mana crystals."
Lily looked over. "What are they?"
"I’ve seen crystals like these at a ruin on the western edge of Nexus. They don’t store mana. They respond to movement."
Lily’s eyes widened. She moved her hand near one, and it brightened, then dimmed as she pulled away. She stared at it. "Interesting."
Sera looked at Kai. "That tone means she’s going to be here for three hours."
"Probably," Kai said.
Lily turned around. "I can hear both of you."
"We know."
The elevator kept descending until it reached level 150, the deepest number they had seen from the hallway above. Then the display flickered and went blank, and the broken circle returned. The elevator didn’t stop.
Kai looked at the panel. "There are no more levels."
"No," Aren said, looking down. "There are. We’re still descending."
Sera crossed her arms. "So the elevator just stops counting."
"Maybe because we’re below the original structure," Lily said.
Kai looked at her. "Below it?"
She pointed at the walls, and Kai studied them. The stone wasn’t just older. It was different. It wasn’t built from blocks at all, but formed one continuous surface, as if the entire shaft had been carved straight out of the earth.
Aren touched the wall, and his expression turned serious. "This isn’t a building. We’re not traveling through an underground structure anymore. We’re traveling through a tunnel."
Lily’s eyes widened. "Then what was the building?"
Aren looked up. "The thing we thought was the bottom."
The elevator kept going, and the silence grew heavier. Nobody was joking anymore, and even Sera had stopped teasing Lily and Aren. There was something unsettling about going this deep beneath a city that had stood for centuries.
They passed another layer, then another. Ancient roads appeared alongside the shaft, and huge tunnels stretched away into darkness, some holding structures and others vanishing into the earth. At one point, through an opening in the shaft, Kai saw something enormous. It looked like a bridge, but it was far too large, stretching through the dark and disappearing beyond the reach of their light.
"What was that?" Kai asked.
"I don’t know," Aren said.
Kai looked at him. "You really don’t?"
"No." Aren stared into the darkness. "I’ve never been this deep."
Lily smiled faintly. "Neither have I."
Sera looked between them. "You two sound happy about that."
"We are."
"Of course you are."
Then they passed another layer, and Lily suddenly stepped up to the wall. "Stop!"
The elevator kept moving, and Kai pressed the control panel, but nothing happened.
Lily’s expression had completely changed as she pointed at a small mark carved into the stone, a circle with three lines through it.
Kai recognized it immediately. "Aegis."
"Yes," Lily said.
Aren looked at the symbol. "That can’t be right. Aegis is on the other side of the continent."
Lily shook her head. "This isn’t from Aegis. This symbol is older. Much older."
They passed another symbol, then another, each from a different civilization, in a different language and a different era. The only thing they had in common was that every one of those civilizations had built something here.
Kai stared at the walls. "We’re going through history."
"Not just history," Lily said, looking down into the darkness below them. "Layers of it."
At last, the elevator began to slow. The movement grew quieter, and the blue light beneath their feet brightened.
Sera straightened. "Finally."
Aren looked at the doors. "Ready?"
Sera glanced at him. "For what?"
"Anything."
She smiled. "That’s a terrible answer."
The elevator stopped, but the doors stayed closed. For a few seconds, nothing happened, and then a deep mechanical sound rolled through the shaft. The symbol above the doors changed, six sections lit, the seventh still dark, and the doors slid open.
Cold air rushed into the elevator. Kai stepped out first, and then he stopped.
Sera nearly walked into him. "What?"
Kai didn’t answer, and she stepped up beside him. Her eyes went wide. "Oh."
Lily walked out and stopped too, and Aren came through the doors without a word. Gabriel stepped out last, and even she stayed silent.
The elevator had opened onto a massive underground facility. It wasn’t a chamber or a ruin. It was a facility, and it stretched farther than any of them could see. Huge platforms filled the darkness, and ancient machines stood everywhere, some small enough to fit inside a car and others larger than buildings. There were cranes, platforms, energy conduits, storage units, and devices none of them could name, thousands of machines, all dormant and covered in centuries of dust.
The ceiling disappeared into darkness far above them, and thin blue lines ran across the floor, some forming walkways and others linking machines together. At the center of the facility sat a massive circular structure covered in symbols.
There were no monsters, no ancient warriors, no traps, and no enemies. There was only silence, and thousands of machines waiting in the dark.
Lily slowly walked forward, her eyes wide. "This..." She stopped.
Aren walked past her. "This is..." He stopped too.
For once, the two of them weren’t arguing. They were just staring.
Kai looked at them. "You two okay?"
Lily nodded slowly. "Yes."
Aren smiled. "Very."
"This is incredible," Lily said, taking another step.
Aren moved right beside her and pointed at a group of massive machines. "Do you see those? They’re not reactors."
"No."
"Then what are they?"
"I don’t know."
Aren smiled. "Want to find out?"
Lily smiled back. "Obviously."
Sera glanced at Kai, and he just raised both hands before she could say anything.
As they walked deeper into the facility, its scale became clearer. One machine looked like a massive circular engine, another like a transportation platform, and another like some kind of construction system. There were storage chambers, repair stations, control platforms, and doors of every size, along with machines no one could identify at all. The facility hadn’t been built for one purpose. It was an entire civilization’s support center.
Lily’s tablet couldn’t keep up with the readings. "It’s too much. Too many systems." She turned slowly in place. "This isn’t one machine."
"It’s a facility," Kai said.
"It’s more than that." Lily pointed up at the ceiling, where thousands of thin energy lines ran overhead. Some disappeared into the walls, others ran upward toward Nexus, and some went down.
Aren looked at the floor. "Deeper?"
Lily nodded. "Some of the energy channels are going below us."
Kai frowned. "Below this?"
"Yes."
Sera looked around. "How much deeper can there be?"
Nobody answered.
Aren looked at the massive central machine. "Maybe that’s what we’re supposed to find out."
Kai walked toward it, and the closer he got, the more Distortion reacted. It wasn’t strong, just a faint pressure moving through the air, and Kai stopped.
Sera noticed. "What?"
"Something’s responding," Kai said.
Lily turned. "What?"
Kai didn’t answer, because he wasn’t sure. It wasn’t like the System. There was no notification and no message, only a faint feeling, as if the facility had noticed him.
Then one of the machines clicked, and everyone froze. Another machine clicked, then another, and the sound spread through the facility as small blue lights appeared across the darkness, one, then five, then twenty.
Aren slowly raised his weapon, and Sera did the same while Gabriel prepared a spell. Lily stared at the machines.
"Wait," Kai said, raising a hand.
The lights stopped multiplying. Nothing attacked, and no monsters came out of the dark. The facility stayed silent.
Then a single ancient screen near the central structure flickered, shedding dust, and displayed the broken circle, seven sections with six lit and one dark.
"That’s the same symbol," Lily said, stepping closer.
Kai nodded.
No words appeared on the screen. Instead, a simple diagram formed, seven nodes around one central structure, with a single line running from that structure to something beneath it.
Lily’s expression changed. "It’s showing us the network."
"No," Aren said, pointing at the line. "It’s showing us something underneath the network."
The line kept going, deeper and deeper, and then the screen went dark. The machines went still, the blue lights faded, and silence returned.
Sera looked around, then at Kai. "So we came all the way down here, and we found another staircase."
Somewhere in the darkness, an ancient door slowly opened, revealing another passage leading down.
Kai sighed. "Apparently."
Lily smiled, and so did Aren.
Sera looked at both of them. "Don’t."
They both stopped.
Sera pointed at them. "I know that look."
Lily frowned. "What look?"
"The one that says you’re about to race each other into an ancient death trap."
Aren thought about it. "We weren’t."
"We were going to walk quickly," Lily said.
Sera stared at them.
Kai looked at the open passage, then at the thousands of dormant machines around them.
There were no enemies, no monsters, and no immediate danger, only an ancient facility that had been waiting beneath Nexus for thousands of years, and now they had found it.
He stepped toward the passage. "Let’s see where it goes."
Lily and Aren followed him immediately, and Sera sighed. "Of course."
Behind them, a small machine quietly switched on, and a single blue light appeared, then another, and another. The ancient facility was waking up, not all at once, but one system at a time.
And somewhere far beneath them, something was still waiting.
