My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 393: The First System
The last message glowed in the darkness for a moment longer, and then it was gone.
Nobody spoke. A moment ago, millions of lights had lit the streets of the ancient city, and now the only light left was Starbreaker’s faint blue glow.
Sera slowly raised her sword. "Everyone, stay close."
"Agreed," Aren said, moving beside her.
Lily looked at the dead archive. "What was watching us?"
"I don’t know," Gabriel said.
Kai looked up into the darkness above the tower. The opening Distortion had made was already closed, and whatever he had seen was gone, but he could still feel it. It wasn’t inside the city, or even beneath Nexus. It was somewhere far away, and it had noticed them.
He turned back to the crystal. "The archive isn’t finished. The record stopped the moment the observer appeared."
Lily understood immediately. "The archive protected itself."
"Exactly."
She rushed to the crystal. "Then there might still be something left." She pressed her scanner against the base, and nothing happened. She tried again. "Come on..."
"Lily," Sera said.
"I know." Lily adjusted the settings. "This archive ran for thousands of years. It can’t just lose everything."
Aren looked around the dark city. "Maybe it can."
Lily ignored him and changed the settings again, and the crystal flickered once, then twice. A faint image appeared, and everyone turned. It showed a figure that looked human, though the recording was damaged and its face was missing, leaving only an outline. Behind it stood the same geometric structure they had seen before, the first System.
FIRST SYSTEM RECORD.
Lily started recording. "Don’t move."
Sera looked at her. "Nobody was planning to."
The figure began to speak, its voice distorted by time, but its meaning was clear.
"We believed our civilization had reached the limits of what was possible."
The image shifted to an ancient city far beyond anything the modern world had built, with flying structures gliding between towers and energy flowing through enormous networks. Then the sky darkened, and everything stopped.
"Then we encountered something we could not fight."
The projection grew distorted, and something enormous appeared beyond the city. It wasn’t a creature, a machine, or a Disaster. It was too large and too strange, and its shape seemed to change every time the image shifted.
"That’s..." Lily began, and she couldn’t finish.
Kai understood why. The archive wasn’t showing them the thing clearly. It was as if the recording itself couldn’t describe it.
"Our weapons failed," the figure said, as enormous weapons fired and nothing happened. "Our energy failed. Our strongest warriors failed." Ancient warriors charged forward and vanished. "Our knowledge failed." Scholars gathered around strange machines, and then the entire city went dark.
The figure paused. "We had reached the limit of what we could become."
Kai’s eyes narrowed as the image changed, and the geometric structure descended from the sky.
"Then it appeared."
The projection focused on the structure. It wasn’t a person, a god, or a machine in any normal sense. It was a framework, a set of rules, a system of measurement built to observe.
SYSTEM INITIALIZATION.
OBSERVATION.
ADAPTATION.
PROGRESSION.
"It was building a framework," Lily whispered.
"It did not give us victory," the figure said.
The ancient city changed. People began receiving symbols, numbers, abilities, paths, and classes, and then the first Hunter appeared, standing in the middle of the city as a glowing interface opened in front of them.
CLASS SELECTION.
LEVEL 1.
SKILL ACQUIRED.
Sera slowly lowered her sword. "So Hunters weren’t the beginning. They already existed?"
"No," Kai said, pointing at the recording. "They were created."
"By the System," Lily said.
"The System divided potential into measurable forms," the figure continued, as the words appeared one after another. CLASS. LEVEL. SKILL. ATTRIBUTE. RANK. EVOLUTION. PROGRESSION.
Ordinary people became stronger. Hunters trained, classes developed, and cities grew more powerful as they fought back against monsters. But the System didn’t simply hand anyone power. It made them earn it. One Hunter killed a monster and leveled up, another survived a dangerous mission and evolved, and another made it out of a ruin with a new skill.
"Power without understanding would not be enough," the figure said.
Kai’s expression changed, because that sentence mattered.
CONTROLLED PROGRESSION.
"Controlled," Lily said.
Gabriel stepped closer. "The System wasn’t just empowering them."
"It was controlling how they grew," Kai said.
The projection moved through different civilizations, different cities, and different people, and every one of them was shaped by the same framework of classes, levels, and skills. The System was repeating the process over and over.
Aren frowned. "Why?"
"Because we could not defeat what waited beyond our world," the figure said, as the unknown presence appeared again and the recording distorted around it. "So the System changed its objective."
OBJECTIVE: PREPARATION.
Lily stared at it. "Preparation for the thing they couldn’t fight."
Kai nodded.
"The System could not make us strong enough at once," the figure continued. "So it created a path."
The image showed a Hunter rising level by level and rank by rank, earning new skills and facing stronger monsters, and then the System began creating much larger events.
TRIAL INITIATED.
Monsters descended on the ancient civilization, cities were destroyed, and Hunters fought as people died. But the attacks weren’t random. They were structured and measured, and the recording labeled each one as it came.
TRIAL ONE: SURVIVAL.
TRIAL TWO: COOPERATION.
TRIAL THREE: JUDGMENT.
The third image showed Bahamut, not as a monster, but standing before a civilization, and Kai’s expression tightened. He had always thought of Bahamut’s trial as something personal, and it had been. But it had also been part of something much larger, a stage in a controlled sequence. Lily’s theory in the archive days ago had been right, and now the System’s own record was confirming it.
"Each trial increased the conditions," the figure said.
"Then the Disasters..." Aren said.
"Were designed tests," Kai finished.
Nobody said anything.
Sera looked at him. "Designed?"
Kai shook his head. "Not fake. The destruction was real, and the people who died were real." He looked back at the crystal. "But the circumstances were designed."
"So the System creates real disasters to test a civilization," Lily said slowly.
Another message appeared on the crystal.
TRIAL DESIGN.
ENVIRONMENT: REAL.
CONSEQUENCES: REAL.
OBJECTIVE: CONTROLLED.
Lily went pale. "So it doesn’t simulate the danger. It actually happens. But the System decides what the danger is."
"At least according to this record," Kai said.
Sera looked at the screen. "Then Mythal..."
Kai’s expression grew complicated. "Mythal was tested."
"Humanity was tested," Gabriel said quietly.
For the first time, the Disasters didn’t look like random catastrophes to any of them. They looked like examinations, and each time, the System had watched, measured, and recorded.
"But why?" Lily asked.
The archive had one last section, heavily damaged, with only fragments left.
PREPARATION PHASE.
TRIALS REQUIRED.
QUALIFICATION.
NEXT PHASE.
"Next phase," Lily said. They were the same words Starbreaker had shown them.
The first System hadn’t simply been creating Hunters. It had been building humanity toward some condition it considered necessary. The Disasters weren’t the destination. They were the training ground.
The ancient figure returned, its voice weaker now.
"We believed the System would tell us what we were preparing for." The image flickered. "It did not. It only gave us the next trial." A pause. "We obeyed."
The image went dark, and a final line appeared.
ERROR.
FIRST CIVILIZATION: FAILED.
Kai’s eyes widened. "What?"
Lily stepped forward. "Failed?"
Gabriel stared at the record. "They were the first. How could they fail?"
"They encountered the System first," Kai said, looking at the projection. "That made them its first subjects."
The crystal flickered again.
SYSTEM PHASE TWO INITIATED.
FIRST CIVILIZATION STATUS: TERMINATED.
The room went silent.
"Terminated," Sera said.
Aren looked out at the perfectly preserved city. "Then where did they go?"
Nobody answered. Kai looked at the empty streets, the untouched homes, and the silent machines. A civilization had built all of this and then vanished, and the System had carried on without them. It didn’t need that civilization to survive. It only needed subjects.
Now you see why I refused to tell you, Tiamat said quietly.
Kai’s eyes narrowed. You knew the first civilization failed, and you knew the Disasters were trials.
Yes.
What happened to them?
Tiamat was silent.
Tiamat.
That is one answer I will not give you yet.
Kai’s jaw tightened. Because I’m not strong enough?
Because knowing it will change what you are willing to do.
Kai went still. That answer was different from all the others. What does that mean?
You still think of the System as something that helps humanity.
It does help humanity.
Yes, Tiamat said. That is what makes it dangerous.
Before Kai could ask anything more, the crystal came to life again, and this time the record wasn’t ancient. It was recent, very recent.
CURRENT SYSTEM PHASE.
PHASE THREE.
JUDGMENT COMPLETE.
Lily froze. "That’s us."
QUALIFICATION STATUS: ACHIEVED.
Starbreaker began to glow in Kai’s hand.
PREPARATION PHASE: COMPLETE.
Kai looked at the relic. They had seen that exact line before, but this time there was one more.
NEXT PHASE: INITIALIZATION.
The ancient city trembled, and Sera raised her sword. "What does that mean?"
Kai didn’t answer. The old records vanished, and the city lit up again, but not in blue. It lit up in white, every tower, road, and machine activating at the same moment, as a deep vibration rolled through the streets.
Lily stared at her scanner. "The entire system is waking up."
"Because the three trials are complete," Gabriel said, looking at Kai.
Kai looked out into the darkness beyond the city. The unknown observer was still out there, watching and waiting, and now something was beginning.
The crystal displayed one final message, one line at a time.
TRIALS WERE NEVER THE PURPOSE.
THEY WERE PREPARATION.
PREPARATION IS COMPLETE.
BEGINNING NEXT PHASE.
Every light in the First Civilization turned the same direction, upward, toward the surface and the sky beyond it. Distortion surged through Kai’s body, and for the first time since entering the ancient city, he could feel something beyond the Disasters, the thing the System had spent all this time preparing them for.
Now it begins, Tiamat said.
Kai stared upward. "What begins?"
She didn’t answer, and all around them, the underground civilization came alive.
