My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 388: The Archive Guardian
The image vanished, and the archive went completely dark. For one second, there was nothing.
BOOM!
The floor exploded, and a massive stone arm tore up through the ground.
"Move!" Kai shouted.
Sera grabbed Lily and pulled her back, Aren leaped aside, and Gabriel threw up a barrier just as the stone arm slammed into it. The barrier cracked, and the whole chamber shook.
Gabriel’s eyes went wide. "It broke through my barrier?"
The arm pulled back, and the floor split open as something enormous rose out of the ground beneath the archive. It was built from stone, metal, and ancient crystal, nearly ten meters tall and covered in layered armor, with six huge arms reaching out from its shoulders. Each one held a different weapon, a blade, a hammer, a spear, a shield, a chain, and something that looked like a staff. Its head had no eyes and no mouth, only a single glowing symbol, the broken circle.
Do not underestimate that thing, Tiamat said.
Kai tightened his fists. You know what it is?
An Archive Guardian.
How strong?
Strong enough.
That’s not helpful.
You will understand shortly.
The Guardian raised all six weapons, and a voice echoed through the chamber.
"UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS."
Sera raised her sword. "That’s never a good opening line."
The Guardian moved so fast that Kai barely saw it. Its hammer struck the ground, and the shockwave threw everyone backward. Kai twisted in midair and landed on his feet, but Sera crashed into a pillar.
"Lily!" she shouted.
"I’m fine!"
Gabriel raised another barrier, and the Guardian’s spear punched straight through it. "Everyone, move!"
Kai appeared beside Gabriel and yanked her out of the way as the spear drove into the ground behind her, blasting stone in every direction. He looked at the crater it left. "That’s stronger than it looks."
Aren rolled across the floor. "That’s stronger than anything I’ve ever seen!"
The Guardian turned toward him, all six weapons shifting, and Aren’s expression changed. "Oh."
The hammer came down, and Aren raised his shield. The impact bent the metal and launched him across the room into the far wall.
Sera crossed the distance in an instant and struck the Guardian’s shoulder, but her blade barely scratched the armor. The Guardian turned, and one of its arms swung toward her, but Kai was already there. Distortion slowed the attack for a fraction of a second, just long enough for him to redirect it, and the Guardian’s fist slammed into the floor beside Sera instead.
She looked at him. "Thanks."
"You’re welcome."
She looked back at the Guardian. "That thing is ridiculous."
"Yes," Kai said.
When the Guardian attacked again, Kai met it head-on and drove his fist into its armored chest. It moved back half a step, and Kai’s eyes narrowed. His hand hurt. That hadn’t happened in a long time.
He stepped back.
You cannot overpower it, Tiamat said quietly.
I noticed.
Then stop trying.
Kai looked at Sera, then at Lily and Gabriel, and he understood. The Guardian wasn’t like an ordinary monster. It wasn’t simply attacking whoever was strongest. It was reading threats, predicting their movements, and countering their abilities, because it had been built to defend this place. And they were fighting it as five separate Hunters, exactly the way Aegis had failed.
"Sera!" Kai called. "Keep its attention."
"Got it."
"Lily, find its weakness."
Lily nodded. "Already scanning."
Gabriel raised her hand. "Support?"
"Control the battlefield."
Gabriel smiled. "Finally."
Kai looked at Aren. "Can you still fight?"
Aren pushed himself off the wall, his shield badly dented, and grinned. "Did you think one hit would keep me down?"
"Good. Get it to turn toward you."
Aren laughed. "That’s all?"
"That’s enough."
Sera moved first. She charged, dodged beneath the Guardian’s spear, and struck its leg, but nothing happened. She struck again with the same result, and the Guardian swung its hammer as she leaped back. "Little help!"
Aren charged in from the side and smashed his shield into the Guardian’s knee, and it turned toward him. Aren grinned. "Hello."
The hammer came down, and Aren barely blocked it, his feet digging into the stone. "Okay!" he said through gritted teeth. "Maybe don’t hit that hard!"
Sera struck from behind, hitting the same joint, and this time a crack appeared.
"Right leg!" Lily shouted.
Kai moved. Distortion spread through the chamber, and he saw dozens of possible paths. Almost all of them ended with the Guardian countering him, but one didn’t. Kai stepped through it and reappeared beneath the Guardian’s arm, driving his palm into the damaged joint. The armor cracked, and the Guardian stumbled.
Lily’s eyes widened. "That worked!"
"Where next?" Kai asked.
"Chest!"
Gabriel raised both hands, and ancient light spread across the floor as chains of energy wrapped around the Guardian’s legs. The Guardian strained against them, and Gabriel’s expression tightened. "I can hold it for five seconds!"
"That’s enough."
Lily’s scanner marked three weak points across the Guardian’s body. "Left shoulder!" Sera struck it. "Right knee!" Aren hit it. "Core!" Kai moved.
The Guardian let out a grinding shriek, and for the first time, its movements turned unstable. Its six weapons swung wildly, and one of them nearly hit Lily before Kai appeared in front of her and blocked it, the impact sending him sliding backward.
Lily stared at him. "Are you okay?"
Kai glanced at his arm. His sleeve was torn, and a shallow cut ran across his skin. "I’m fine."
It is adapting, Tiamat said.
How fast?
Very.
Can you help?
She was silent for a moment. Not directly.
Kai frowned. Why?
Because this is your battle.
Kai smiled faintly. You’re getting stricter.
You are getting stronger. That answer surprised him. And this is exactly the kind of battle you need.
Kai looked at his team, and she was right. This wasn’t a fight he was supposed to win alone.
He looked at Sera. "Again."
She smiled. "Gladly."
The next attack was completely different. Sera stopped trying to kill the Guardian and started moving it instead, every strike forcing it to turn and every dodge opening a gap. Aren used his shield to steer where it stood, Lily called out weak points, and Gabriel reinforced everyone while reshaping the battlefield around them.
Kai waited. He didn’t attack, not yet.
The Guardian’s six weapons moved faster as it adapted. Sera ducked, Aren blocked, and Lily shouted, "Core exposed!"
Kai moved. Distortion bent the world around him, and he stepped through a gap that shouldn’t have existed. One step. Two. Three. He reached the Guardian’s chest, but it was ready for him. Its shield arm swung across, and his path vanished.
Kai stopped as the spear came at his chest, and he twisted aside, but it grazed his ribs, and pain flashed through him.
Sera’s eyes went wide. "Kai!"
"I’m fine!"
He landed as the Guardian raised its hammer, and he looked at Sera. "Sera."
She understood immediately and charged, and the Guardian turned toward her. Aren attacked from the other side, and it turned again.
"Core!" Lily shouted.
Gabriel released every barrier she had at once, and the Guardian froze for half a second.
Half a second was enough. Kai didn’t move toward the Guardian this time. He bent the space around its own weapon instead, and the hammer swung off course and slammed into the Guardian’s chest.
BOOM!
The core cracked, and blue light burst from the Guardian’s body as it staggered. Sera struck the damaged shoulder, Aren hit the knee, and Lily’s scanner flared.
"Now!"
Kai drove his hand into the cracked core, and Distortion surged. The Guardian froze, and Kai felt something enormous pushing back against him. It wasn’t just resisting his power. It was resisting reality itself.
Kai gritted his teeth. "I’ve got it."
The core fought him, the room shook, and the stone cracked under his feet.
Sera grabbed his shoulder. "Need help?"
Kai looked at her. "Yes."
She placed her hand over his, and a second later Aren’s joined them, then Lily’s, then Gabriel’s. Five of them, focused on a single point.
The pressure changed, and Kai felt Distortion steady. The Guardian’s resistance weakened, and the cracked core collapsed inward. The enormous construct went still, its six weapons clattering to the floor, and it slowly sank to one knee.
Nobody celebrated. They were too exhausted.
Sera looked at Kai. "You okay?"
He nodded. "Yeah."
Lily stared at the Guardian. "We actually did it."
"Together," Aren said with a laugh.
Gabriel smiled. "That’s what Aegis never understood."
The kneeling Guardian slowly lowered its head, and the symbol on its face began to change. The three dark sections faded away, leaving only the fourth.
"AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED."
The Guardian’s chest opened, and a small crystal floated into the air.
"What is that?" Lily asked.
Gabriel stepped forward. "A record."
The crystal drifted toward Kai, and he caught it. The moment it touched his hand, the entire archive went silent, and a projection appeared of an ancient figure standing in darkness, with no face and no name, only a voice.
"The System was created to prepare the world."
Everyone stared. Aren slowly lowered his weapon, Lily’s eyes went wide, and Gabriel whispered, "So that’s it..."
Kai didn’t answer. That one sentence seemed to explain everything, the System, Hunters, classes, and even the Disasters. All of it had been built to make civilization stronger, to prepare humanity for what was coming.
"It makes sense," Sera said.
Lily nodded slowly. "The System wasn’t made to rule civilization. It was made to prepare it."
For the first time in hours, Gabriel smiled, and she looked relieved. "Then perhaps we finally understand why it exists."
Kai stared at the projection, and something bothered him. The answer was too simple, and too clean. He remembered Tiamat’s warning, that some truths could be learned, and others had to be survived first.
Then the crystal changed, and everyone froze as a second line appeared and the ancient voice spoke again.
"But not for the Disasters."
The smile vanished from Gabriel’s face, and Lily went completely still. Aren lowered his weapon the rest of the way, and Sera turned to Kai.
Kai stared at the words as silence filled the archive. If the System hadn’t been made to prepare the world for the Disasters, then what was it preparing the world for?
The crystal went dark.
