My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 382: The Fourth Door
Nobody moved. The fourth symbol was still glowing on the ancient mural, a door instead of a monster, an army, or a weapon, with nothing behind it but a field of stars.
Kai stared at the words carved beneath it.
The fourth is not an enemy.
Sera was the first to break the silence. "So... are we supposed to open it?"
"No," Lily said immediately.
Sera looked at her. "That was fast."
"We don't know what's behind it."
"That's usually when people open doors."
"Exactly."
Sera sighed. "You're no fun."
Lily ignored her and swept her scanner across the mural, projecting lines of light over the ancient stone. There was no energy reading, no hidden mechanism, and no sign of a trap.
She frowned. "It's strange. The first three symbols all represent events." She pointed to each one in turn, the dragon that covered nearly half the wall, the six symbols surrounding a city, and the lone figure beneath an enormous sky. "Destruction, Calamity, and Judgment." Then she pointed at the door. "And this one is Transition."
Kai looked at her. "You're sure?"
"No," Lily admitted. "It's the closest translation I can find."
Aren stepped closer. "What makes you think that?"
Lily zoomed in on the strange lines surrounding the doorway. "These aren't defensive markings."
Aren studied them. "They aren't warning symbols either."
"Exactly." Lily traced them with her finger. "They look like movement, like something passing from one state to another."
"Transition," Gabriel said thoughtfully.
Sera looked at the mural again. "So the first three are things that happen, and the fourth is... something changing?"
Nobody answered.
What bothered Kai about the door wasn't that it felt dangerous. It was that it didn't. Distortion was completely silent, with no pressure and no warning of any threat. For once, there was nothing to fight, only something to understand.
He stepped closer, and the stars behind the door shifted. For a brief moment, the mural didn't look like a painting anymore. It looked like a window, with thousands of distant lights beyond it, maybe millions, and something enormous moving between them.
Then the image vanished, and the mural was just stone again.
"Kai?" Sera said.
He looked at her. "What?"
"You stopped moving."
"I'm fine."
Sera studied him for another second. She knew him well enough to notice when something had changed, but she didn't push him, not yet.
Aren looked at the mural. "Could this be another Disaster?"
"The inscription says it isn't an enemy," Gabriel said.
"That doesn't mean it's harmless."
"No." Gabriel looked at the door. "But I don't think that's what they're trying to tell us."
Aren frowned. "Then what?"
Gabriel didn't answer.
"I have another problem," Lily said, looking through her data. "The first three symbols all appear in the Aegis records." She pulled up the recovered images, and the dragon matched the Dragon of Destruction, the six symbols matched the Sixfold Calamity, and the figure matched the King of the Sky. Then she brought up the doorway. "The fourth has no record at all."
"Maybe the fourth event never happened," Aren said.
"That's possible."
"But if it never happened," Sera said, looking at the mural, "why would they build an entire symbol for it?"
Neither Aren nor Lily had an answer.
Kai looked at the ancient words again, and he remembered the final message beneath Aegis, the one that had stayed with him ever since.
If you have survived the first three, do not prepare for the fourth. Prepare for what comes after.
His eyes narrowed. The answer suddenly felt obvious, and terrifying.
"Transition," he said quietly, and everyone turned to him. "This isn't a fourth Disaster."
Aren crossed his arms. "We already know that."
"No, we misunderstood the warning." Kai looked at the door. "Aegis told us not to prepare for a fourth Disaster, because there isn't one. The fourth isn't something that attacks the world. It's something that changes it."
Nobody spoke.
Lily slowly lowered her scanner. "Changes it how?"
"I don't know."
Aren frowned. "Then how can you be sure?"
"I'm not. But think about the wording. Prepare for what comes after."
Aren's expression changed, but Gabriel understood first. "The Disasters aren't the final objective."
Kai nodded. "They're preparation."
Lily stared at the mural. "For what?"
"I don't know," Kai said, looking at the stars beyond the door. "But maybe that's the point."
A tremor shook the chamber, and everyone looked up as the seven pillars around the room began to glow. The first lit up completely, then the second and the third, but the fourth stayed dark. The fifth and sixth flickered, and then the seventh exploded with light, sending a wave of energy rushing across the chamber.
Kai raised his hand, and Distortion bent the energy around him on instinct.
Sera moved closer. "Kai!"
"I'm fine."
The floor shook harder, cracking the ancient stone and shaking dust loose from the ceiling as Gabriel threw a barrier around the group. "This place is waking up."
Lily stared at her scanner. "No, it's not waking up. It's connecting."
Aren's eyes narrowed. "Connecting to what?"
Lily turned her scanner toward the mural, and it began to shriek. "Something outside."
Kai looked up. The stars behind the fourth door grew brighter, and then one of them moved, drawing a line of light across the mural. Another followed, then another, until thousands of lines had formed a massive network.
Kai's eyes widened. They weren't stars. They were locations, worlds or cities or something even larger. The mural had become a map, and Nexus was only one point among countless others.
"What are we looking at?" Sera whispered.
Nobody answered. The ancient writing beneath the fourth symbol began to change, and Lily stepped closer. "I can translate this."
The chamber went completely silent as she read.
"Three stages prepare the world. Three stages test those who live within it. Three stages determine whether civilization can continue." Her voice grew quieter as the final line appeared. "The fourth begins when preparation is complete."
Kai stared at the words, and his heart pounded once, hard. The System had always presented the Disasters as threats to survive and overcome, but what if that was only part of the truth? What if the Disasters weren't trying to destroy humanity at all, but measuring it, testing it and teaching it for something beyond them?
He thought of Mythal. The First Disaster had forced them to survive, and the Second had forced them to work together. The Third had judged whether Kai could keep going without certainty. And the fourth wasn't coming to destroy them. It was coming to change what they were.
"Then what happens when the preparation is complete?" Aren asked quietly.
Kai looked at the door. "I don't know."
"Another trial?"
"Maybe."
"A new Disaster?"
"No." Kai shook his head. "I think it's something bigger."
Sera looked at him. "How much bigger?"
Kai looked at the countless lights behind the door and the ancient map spreading across the wall. "Big enough that the people who built this place didn't call it an enemy."
The room went silent again. Then the fourth symbol shifted, and the door opened another fraction. A cold wind flowed into the chamber, not from outside, but from somewhere beyond the mural, and Kai felt it against his face.
This time, Distortion reacted differently. It didn't sense danger or fear. It sensed possibility. Hundreds of thousands of paths opened in his mind, some leading up and some leading down, some running across Nexus and others stretching beyond the continent. A few of them went beyond the sky.
Kai staggered, and Sera caught his arm. "Kai?"
He looked at her. "I'm fine."
She didn't let go. "What did you see?"
Kai looked back at the door. "Paths."
"To where?"
He shook his head. "I don't know."
The door stopped moving. The light faded, the mural returned to stone, and the pillars went dark, leaving the chamber in silence.
Aren slowly lowered his weapon and looked at Kai. "So are we still calling this an expedition?"
"No," Lily said, staring at the mural.
Sera looked at her. "Then what do we call it?"
Lily swallowed. "A warning."
"I think you're right," Gabriel said.
Kai read the ancient words one last time. The fourth begins when preparation is complete. He thought about everyone in Mythal who had survived the Disasters and rebuilt, all of them believing that surviving was the goal. Maybe it wasn't. Maybe survival had only been the beginning.
He turned toward the exit. "We need to go back to Nexus."
Aren nodded. "For once, I agree."
Sera glanced at the mural. "And after that?"
Kai stopped and looked over his shoulder. "The next ruin."
Lily smiled. "Good."
Gabriel sighed. "I knew you were going to say that."
Kai smiled faintly. "There are still more of them."
Aren laughed. "Then I suppose the race isn't over."
"No," Kai said, glancing back at the ancient door. "It just got bigger."
Far beneath the ruins, something answered with a single pulse, then another. Across the continent, the six awakened structures pulsed at the same time, and somewhere beneath Nexus City, a sealed mechanism began to turn.
The age of the Disasters wasn't ending. Something was preparing to begin.
