My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 376: Ancient Nexus
The ancient tower kept rising from beneath Nexus City. Stone tore through the streets, concrete cracked apart, and cars were shoved sideways as the road beneath them split open.
BOOM!
The ground heaved hard enough to throw people off their feet, and Kai grabbed the railing beside him as the building swayed. "What the hell is happening?"
Another tremor hit, and the lights flickered once, then twice, before the entire district went dark.
Kai looked outside. Nexus had lost power across whole sections of the city. A few buildings still glowed with emergency lights, but the elevated roads, billboards, and traffic signals had all gone black, and the airships overhead switched to emergency lighting as people flooded into the streets and sirens rose from every direction.
"This isn’t a Disaster," Kai said.
Gabriel looked at him. "How can you tell?"
"There was no warning."
Kai had lived through three Disasters, and this felt nothing like them. The air wasn’t heavy with that same crushing pressure, and there was no System announcement, no strange sign in the sky, and no sudden wave of monsters. Instead, the ground beneath Nexus was moving, and something ancient was waking up.
Another crack tore through the street, and the reporter who had questioned Kai stumbled backward, dropping her microphone as she stared at the tower. "What is that?"
Nobody answered. A section of pavement collapsed, and something rose through the gap. It was a road made of ancient stone, pushing up through the city as though it had been buried directly beneath Nexus for thousands of years. It stretched across the intersection and split three ways, one path running east, another west, and a third disappearing beneath a modern building.
"There’s a road under the city," the reporter said.
Lily rushed to the window, and her eyes went wide. "That’s not a road. It’s an ancient transportation system."
Sera blinked. "That sounds exactly like a road."
"No. Look at the construction."
Kai looked down. The stones fit together perfectly, without a single gap despite their age, and small symbols ran along both edges. Some matched the markings from Aegis, and others were completely new.
"This is incredible," Lily said, and her excitement was impossible to miss.
Sera stared at her. "The entire city is shaking."
"Yes."
"Buildings are losing power."
"Yes."
"People are running for their lives."
"Yes."
"And you’re excited?"
Lily looked at her. "Do you understand how old this could be?"
"No."
"Exactly."
"That doesn’t help your argument."
Lily ignored her and started scanning. "The material is incredibly dense. It’s not ordinary stone, and there’s an energy network running underneath it."
Gabriel stepped closer. "An energy network?"
"Something is powering the roads."
Kai looked toward the tower. "And that?"
Lily scanned it. "Probably a central relay."
Gabriel’s expression turned serious. "Then this isn’t just an old road system."
"No," Lily said, her eyes moving across the city. "It’s infrastructure."
Kai understood immediately. It could be a transportation network, a power grid, and a communication system all at once, or something even larger.
Outside, the Church’s emergency teams were already moving through the streets. Hunters guided civilians out of damaged areas, medical teams set up temporary stations, and Church personnel handed out emergency supplies. Nexus had survived enough monster outbreaks to know how to handle a crisis, but no one knew what to do about an ancient city surfacing beneath their feet.
Gabriel’s communicator crackled. "Archbishop!"
"Report."
"We have structural damage across six districts, mostly roads and underground infrastructure. A few buildings have been evacuated."
"Casualties?"
"Several minor injuries. No confirmed deaths."
Gabriel let out a breath. "Good. Keep the evacuation teams moving."
"Yes, Archbishop."
Kai looked outside again. The ancient road kept spreading, passing beneath one modern street and emerging several hundred meters away. It wasn’t destroying everything in its path. The modern ground seemed to be moving aside for it, as if the old system was reclaiming its original route.
Lily froze. "Wait. The roads are moving."
Sera frowned. "Roads don’t move."
"These do."
Lily zoomed out, and glowing lines began appearing beneath Nexus on her screen, one after another. They weren’t spreading at random. They were following routes that had been planned long ago, and Lily’s excitement turned to confusion. "They’re connecting."
Gabriel walked over. "Connecting what?"
"I don’t know yet."
As the map expanded, more roads appeared, one beneath the Central District, one toward the eastern edge of the city, one toward the Church district, and one continuing past the city limits.
"Can you trace them?" Kai asked.
"I’m trying." Lily worked quickly as the network kept growing, and then she stopped, her face changing.
Kai noticed immediately. "What did you find?"
Lily didn’t answer. She pulled up the map from the forest ruin and placed it over the new one, and the two lined up perfectly. Route after route stretched out from beneath Nexus toward the first location, then the second, then the third and fourth.
Sera stared at the screen. "That’s the map from the ruin."
"Yes," Lily said.
Gabriel’s expression hardened. "How?"
"I don’t know."
Lily zoomed out to show the whole continent, where ancient lines were lighting up between the same seven locations, six known and one missing, all connected to the same center.
Kai stared at it. The city wasn’t just switching on an old transportation network. It was rebuilding something, and he remembered the ancient Hunter’s final warning in the forest ruin.
Some answers were erased for a reason.
"It’s building a path," Kai said.
Gabriel looked at him. "To where?"
Kai didn’t answer. Lily tried to trace the final route, but her scanner failed, and it failed again when she switched systems.
"That’s impossible," she said.
Sera looked at her. "What?"
"The network has a destination, but it isn’t registered."
Gabriel frowned. "Not registered by the Church?"
"Not registered by anyone. No modern map shows it."
Kai stepped closer. "Then where does the road go?"
"I don’t know," Lily said.
The map flickered, and an interface appeared above the network. It wasn’t the Hunter System. It was something older, written in the same ancient language they had seen in Aegis, and Lily translated each line as it appeared.
ANCIENT NETWORK: ACTIVE.
PRIMARY ROUTE: RESTORED.
SEVEN POINTS: LINKING.
Everyone waited for the fourth line, and Lily read it aloud.
DESTINATION: UNKNOWN.
Nobody spoke.
Sera looked at Kai. "That isn’t reassuring."
"No."
Gabriel stared at the map. "Can you tell where the route is supposed to end?"
Lily shook her head. "The final coordinates were deliberately removed."
Kai thought of the erased seventh point. "So the seventh location isn’t just another ruin."
"Maybe not," Lily said.
"What else could it be?"
She hesitated. "I don’t know."
Sera crossed her arms. "That seems to be everyone’s favorite answer today."
Lily gave her an apologetic smile. "Unfortunately, it’s accurate."
BOOOOOOM.
Everyone turned back to the windows. A massive circular opening had appeared near the top of the tower, and light poured out of it into the sky. Beams of energy shot outward across the continent, toward the west, north, east, and south, and two more toward distant regions, and they stayed there, suspended in the air, while all of Nexus watched in silence.
Then an enormous symbol appeared above the tower. It was the broken circle, with six of its sections glowing and one left dark.
A voice echoed across the city. It wasn’t loud, but somehow everyone heard it.
"NETWORK RESTORATION: SIX OF SEVEN."
"Six of seven..." Lily said.
"The missing location," Gabriel whispered.
"FINAL DESTINATION: UNRESOLVED."
Then the light vanished, the ancient roads stopped moving, and the tower went still.
For a moment, nobody knew what to do, until Sera spoke. "So an ancient transportation network just woke up beneath the largest city on the continent."
"Yes," Kai said.
"It’s connected to six ancient ruins, and it has a seventh destination nobody knows about."
"Yes."
Sera nodded slowly. "That’s terrible."
"It’s incredible," Lily said immediately.
Sera looked at her. "Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive."
Gabriel smiled faintly. "For once, I agree with both of you."
Kai looked down at the map. The network wasn’t dormant anymore. Six ruins were connected, and the seventh was still hidden somewhere beyond everything they knew, a destination even the ancient civilizations had erased from their own records. What bothered Kai wasn’t that they didn’t know where it was. It was that someone had gone to great lengths to make sure nobody ever could.
Sera stepped beside him. "What are you thinking?"
Kai was quiet for a moment. "That the seventh point probably isn’t missing."
Sera frowned. "Then where is it?"
"It might be hidden."
Lily’s eyes lit up again. "That would make sense."
Sera sighed. "Please don’t encourage him."
Lily ignored her. "If the network still works, the seventh route has to lead somewhere."
"And if the destination can’t be found on any modern map..." Gabriel said.
Kai looked at the tower. "Then we’re going to have to find out what kind of place doesn’t appear on a map."
The city had gone silent around them, and above Nexus, the ancient symbol slowly faded. But beneath the streets, something was still traveling through the buried network, and somewhere far beyond the known roads of Nexus, something had just received a signal.
