My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 374: The Ancient Hunter
The statue’s eyes glowed, and nobody moved.
Aria tightened her grip on her weapon. "Everyone, stay ready."
The ancient figure stared straight at Kai, and for several seconds, nothing happened. Then it spoke, in a deep, distorted voice that sounded as if it were coming from somewhere very far away.
"If you are seeing this, then our time has already ended."
Lily’s eyes widened. "It’s a recording." She raised her scanner. "The energy isn’t alive."
Sera glanced at the statue. "So it’s not actually looking at us?"
"No. It was designed to activate when someone reached this chamber."
Aria lowered her weapon slightly. "So the creepy statue isn’t alive."
"It never was."
"Somehow that makes this worse."
Sera smiled faintly. "Welcome to ancient ruins."
Kai kept staring at the statue’s face. A recording didn’t explain why it looked so much like him, or why its energy had reacted to him and no one else, but he didn’t say anything.
"We believed strength would save us," the voice continued.
Light spread across the walls, the statues around them began to glow, and a massive image formed above the chamber. It showed a civilization, not a settlement, with enormous walls surrounding a vast city. Towers rose into the sky, bridges linked its districts, and giant energy structures powered it all, with what looked like millions of people living beneath them.
Lily stared upward. "This place was enormous."
"It may have been larger than Nexus," Gabriel said.
"And they had Hunters," Aria said.
"We gathered warriors," the voice said.
The image shifted to thousands of Hunters standing on the walls, some with swords and bows, others in armor, and some wielding strange forms of magic, with massive machines, towers, and energy barriers behind them. Dark clouds gathered over the city, and something enormous moved inside them as the recording flickered.
"We gathered weapons. We gathered relics. We gathered knowledge," the voice went on, as artillery filled the walls, ancient objects were carried into underground vaults, and researchers crowded into enormous halls. "We gathered everything we believed could defeat the coming Disaster."
Kai watched in silence. It all sounded far too familiar.
Then the image changed. The armies left the walls, and the weapons were abandoned. In their place, the civilization began building shelters, supply stores, backup power networks, and tunnels, and entire districts were redesigned from the ground up.
Lily’s expression changed. "They aren’t building weapons anymore."
"No," Gabriel said. "They’re building a way to survive."
"Then we learned the truth," the voice said, and the city faded away. "The Disaster was not coming to destroy us."
Sera frowned. "Then what was it coming for?"
"It was coming to judge us."
Kai’s eyes narrowed. The King does not descend to destroy. He descends to judge. It wasn’t an idea that belonged only to Aegis. It had existed long before Aegis, and maybe long before the people who built it.
"We could not defeat judgment," the ancient Hunter continued. "So we stopped trying."
The image showed the whole civilization working together. Hunters helped civilians, researchers shared what they knew, engineers built alongside soldiers, and healers set up networks across every district while communication systems connected all of them. No one was trying to survive alone.
"They understood," Sera said quietly.
Kai looked at her. "Understood what?"
"That fighting alone wouldn’t work."
Kai nodded.
"We divided nothing," the voice said. "The Hunters did not stand apart from the civilians, and the rulers did not stand apart from the people. The researchers did not hide their knowledge, and the soldiers did not protect only themselves. We prepared together."
The image went dark, and three lines of symbols appeared. Lily stepped closer, her voice growing quieter as she translated each one.
"Strength is preparation. Survival is cooperation." She hesitated at the last line. "Judgment is continuation."
Nobody spoke. The wording wasn’t the same as Aegis, but the meaning was almost identical.
Kai let out a slow breath. "This existed before Aegis."
"It seems so," Gabriel said.
"Then Aegis wasn’t the first to figure this out," Lily said.
"No," Kai said. "They learned it from someone else."
Aria frowned. "How many civilizations are we talking about?"
No one answered, because that was the real question. How many civilizations had faced the Disasters and reached this same conclusion, and how many had failed anyway?
"We survived," the voice said, and everyone looked up.
The image returned. The city was badly damaged, with whole districts gone and the walls collapsed, but its people were still there. Hunters carried rubble, engineers repaired broken systems, healers treated the wounded, and children walked through the streets. The civilization hadn’t come through untouched or victorious, but it was alive.
Sera smiled slightly. "They actually did it."
"Maybe," Lily said.
"We believed survival meant victory," the voice said, and the image froze before collapsing into static. "We were wrong."
Kai’s expression hardened as the ancient Hunter appeared again. He looked older than the statue, tired rather than afraid, simply worn down.
"Survival was only continuation," he said. "The Disaster passed, and our civilization remained. And yet, something had changed."
The image showed an empty sky with no monster, no Disaster, and no army. Then a symbol appeared across it, the same broken circle Kai had seen in Aegis.
"We began to understand that the Disasters were not the end."
"What does that mean?" Lily whispered.
The recording didn’t answer. Instead, the chamber began to shift, and stone moved beneath their feet as a section of the floor opened.
"Everyone back!" Aria shouted.
A massive stone table rose from beneath the chamber, and a map spread across its surface.
"That’s a map," Lily said.
Gabriel shook her head. "It’s more than that."
Seven points of light appeared across it, and Kai recognized the pattern immediately. It was the same shape they had seen on the Church’s map.
Lily activated her scanner. "These coordinates are ancient, but I can identify some of them. The first is near the western mountains. The second is somewhere beneath the northern forests." She paused at the third. "This one appears to be underwater."
Aria frowned. "Underwater?"
"Yes." Lily moved to the fourth point, and her expression slowly changed. "And this one is right beneath Nexus."
Gabriel stared at it. "So that’s what the Church map showed under the city."
"And the others?" Kai asked.
"The data is incomplete," Lily said. "The fifth is unclear, and the sixth location has been damaged." Then she reached the seventh point, and her scanner failed. The map flickered, and the seventh location vanished.
Lily tried again, but nothing came back. "That’s strange."
Gabriel looked over her shoulder. "What happened?"
"The coordinates are gone. They’re not corrupted." Lily shook her head. "They were erased."
Kai stepped closer. He had seen the seventh point only a moment ago, and now there was only a dark patch where it should have been. On the Church’s map, the seventh ruin had been blurred too.
"Can you restore it?" Sera asked.
"I can try." Lily ran every scanning function she had, then changed the frequency and tried to read the surrounding symbols, and the map flickered with a warning.
DATA REMOVED.
Lily stared at it. "Someone deleted it."
Gabriel’s expression turned serious. "Can you tell who did it?"
"No."
"When? Or why?"
Lily slowly shook her head.
Kai looked at the empty space. There were seven locations, six visible and one erased, and somehow he knew the missing one was the one that mattered.
The ancient Hunter’s voice returned, but this time it didn’t sound like a warning. It sounded like a farewell.
"If you have reached this map, then you have survived what we survived."
The six known locations lit up, while the seventh stayed dark.
"You will search for the seven, and you will believe the seven will give you answers." The chamber trembled, and the ancient Hunter looked straight ahead as the recording began to break apart. "But remember, some answers were erased for a reason."
The image vanished, leaving only the map behind, with its six points and one empty space.
Lily stared at the missing location, her voice barely a whisper. "Someone didn’t want us to know where the seventh point leads."
Kai looked at the map, and for the first time since this search began, he felt something more unsettling than any ruin. Someone had known they would come looking, and someone had deliberately hidden where the search was supposed to end.
